eoi/doi Deposit-Electronic Object Identifier http://eoi.citefactor.org/10.11248/ehum.v10i2.2247 Denied identities: history and memory of Pereira de Abreu “Africans” and their descendants on post-abolition in Minas Gerais, based on women’s narrative Resumo: Este artigo procura dar visibilidade à história e memórias referente à Fazenda Mata Cavalo e seus herdeiros – negros alforriados, no segundo quartel do século XIX, tendo como pano de fundo a narrativa de mulheres negras sobre esses seus ancestrais africanos, suas trajetórias e percursos dos descendentes a partir do pós-abolição em Minas Gerais.Optamos por reconstruir a história da Fazenda Mata Cavalo e seus habitantes adotando os procedimentos da pesquisa documental e da história oral, entrecruzando o passado e o presente. O destino dos Pereira de Abreu no pós-abolição foi a dispersão. Dispersou-se, assim, os espaços existenciais e referenciais da cultura negra dos Pereira de Abreu, além de serem privados de uma série de direitos na atualidade, enquanto comunidade negra.  Palavras-Chave: História - memória – pós-abolição - Fazenda Mata Cavalo - população negra – narrativa. Abstract: This article looks for giving visibility to the history and memories related to the Mata Cavalo Farm and its heirs (freed blacks) during the second quarter of the 19th century. History and memories based on the black women’s narratives about their African ancestors, their history, and the descendant’s paths after the post-abolition in Minas Gerais. This article reconstitutes the history of the Mata Cavalo Farm and its inhabitants using desk research and oral history, combining information from past and present. After the post-abolition the family Pereira de Abreu had dispersed, resulting in the scattering of their lands and the dispersion of space-based references of the Pereira de Abreu family’s black culture. In addition they had loose several rights which they could claim as a black community nowadays.  Keywords: History - memory – post-abolition - Mata Cavalo Farm – Black population – narrative.
