Dynamics of entanglement entropy of interacting fermions in a 1D driven harmonic trap
Following up on a recent analysis of two cold atoms in a time-dependent
harmonic trap in one dimension, we explore the entanglement entropy of two and
three fermions in the same situation when driven through a parametric
resonance. We find that the presence of such a resonance in the two-particle
system leaves a clear imprint on the entanglement entropy. We show how the
signal is modified by attractive and repulsive contact interactions, and how it
remains present for the three-particle system. Additionaly, we extend the work
of recent experiments to demonstrate how restricting observation to a limited
subsystem gives rise to locally thermal behavior.Comment: Proceedings of Lattice2017, Granada, Spai
Control in the technical societies: a brief history
By the time control engineering emerged as a coherent body of knowledge and practice (during and just after WW2) professional engineering societies had existed for many decades. Since control engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of the profession, new sections devoted to control were quickly established within the various existing technical societies. In addition, some new bodies devoted specifically or primarily to control were established. This article, a revised version of a paper presented at the IEEE 2009 Conference on the History of Technical Societies, describes how control engineering as a distinct branch of engineering became represented in technical societies in a number of countries

Design considerations for a LORAN-C timing receiver in a hostile signal to noise environment
The environment in which a LORAN-C Timing Receiver may function effectively depends to a large extent on the techniques utilized to insure that interfering signals within the pass band of the unit are neutralized. The baseline performance manually operated timing receivers is discussed and the basic design considerations and necessary parameters for an automatic unit utilizing today's technology are established. Actual performance data is presented comparing the results obtained from a present generation timing receiver against a new generation microprocessor controlled automatic acquisition receiver. The achievements possible in a wide range of signal to noise situations are demonstrated
Effects of organic matter input on soil microbial properties and crop yields in conventional and organic cropping systems
Unlike conventional cropping systems, which are characterised by targeted short-term fertility management, organic farming systems depend on long-term increase in soil fertility and promotion of soil biodiversity. This study sought to investigate long-term effects of organic matter inputs on various cropping systems in a 10-year-old experiment. Results show that in the long-term high C and N inputs enhance microbial activity. Microbial biomass N and the potential nitrification rate were higher in cropping systems based on green manure than in those reliant on inputs from animal manure and mineral fertilizer. Soil microbiological properties were affected by the individual crops in the rotation. The high microbial activity with increased organic matter inputs did not transform to enhanced crop productivity
