    The acoustically evoked short latency negative response (ASNR) in a unilaterally deaf cat with histologically-confirmed cochleosaccular degeneration

    BACKGROUND: A negative potential is occasionally recorded in humans and animals with profound deafness during brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAER) tests if loud intensities are used. This acoustically evoked short latency negative response (ASNR) is hypothesized to be of saccular origin. The sensitivity to sound of vestibular end organs is also used to produce vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP), a test that evaluates vestibular function. The same saccular origin is accepted also for VEMP. CASE PRESENTATION: A neutered male white domestic short hair cat presented with profound deafness and an ASNR in the left ear during BAER test performed when he was 8 months old. BAER tracings were substantially unchanged at the age of 12 years, immediately before euthanasia that was requested by the owner for the presence of an unrelated neoplastic disorder. The cat underwent a complete post-mortem necropsy including histopathology of the middle and inner ears. Histopathologic results confirmed the presence of a cochleosaccular degeneration of the left ear while the cochlea and sacculus of the right ear and the utriculus and semicircular canals of both ears were histologically normal. CONCLUSIONS: This case report describes the auditory and histopathologic findings of a cat that showed an ASNR during BAER test despite the presence of cochleosaccular deafness. These results confirm that a saccular origin for the ASNR in this case, and in general in cats and dogs with congenital deafness associated with white pigmentation, is improbable. The hypothesis that the sacculus is the vestibular end organ responsible for the generation of the ASNR and VEMP in humans comes mainly from animal studies. The findings in this report may change the clinical interpretation of the results of BAER and VEMP not only in companion animals, but in humans as well

    A microfluidic chip for immobilization and imaging of Ciona intestinalis larvae

    Sea squirts (Tunicata) are chordates and develop a swimming larva with a small and defined number of individually identifiable cells. This offers the prospect of connecting specific stimuli to behavioral output and characterizing the neural activity that links these together. Here, we describe the development of a microfluidic chip that allows live larvae of the sea squirt Ciona intestinalis to be immobilized and recorded. By generating transgenic larvae expressing GCaAMP6m in defined cells, we show that calcium ion levels can be recorded from immobilized larvae, while microfluidic control allows larvae to be exposed to specific waterborne stimuli. We trial this on sea water carrying increased levels of carbon dioxide, providing evidence that larvae can sense this gas

    Classification of symmetric periodic trajectories in ellipsoidal billiards

    We classify nonsingular symmetric periodic trajectories (SPTs) of billiards inside ellipsoids of R^{n+1} without any symmetry of revolution. SPTs are defined as periodic trajectories passing through some symmetry set. We prove that there are exactly 2^{2n}(2^{n+1}-1) classes of such trajectories. We have implemented an algorithm to find minimal SPTs of each of the 12 classes in the 2D case (R^2) and each of the 112 classes in the 3D case (R^3). They have periods 3, 4 or 6 in the 2D case; and 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10 in the 3D case. We display a selection of 3D minimal SPTs.     Hybrid Stereocorrelation Using Infrared and Visible Light Cameras

    International audience3D kinematic fields are measured using an original stereovision system composed of one infrared (IR) and one visible light camera. Global stereocorrelation (SC) is proposed to register pictures shot by both imaging systems. The stereo rig is calibrated by using a NURBS representation of the 3D target. The projection matrices are determined by an integrated approach. The effect of gray level and distortion corrections is assessed on the projection matrices. SC is performed once the matrices are calibrated to measure 3D displacements. Amplitudes varying from 0 to 800 µm are well captured for in-plane and out-of-plane motions. It is shown that when known rigid body translations are applied to the target, the calibration can be improved when its actual metrology is approximate. Applications are shown for two different setups for which the resolution of the IR camera has been modified

    Ten-year immune persistence and safety of the HPV-16/18 AS04-adjuvanted vaccine in females vaccinated at 15–55 years of age

    Women remain at risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection for most of their lives. The duration of protection against HPV-16/18 from prophylactic vaccination remains unknown. We investigated the 10-year immune response and long-term safety profile of the HPV-16/18 AS04-adjuvanted vaccine (AS04-HPV-16/18 vaccine) in females aged between 15 and 55 years at first vaccination. Females who received primary vaccination with three doses of AS04-HPV-16/18 vaccine in the primary phase-III study (NCT00196937) were invited to attend annual evaluations for long-term immunogenicity and safety. Anti-HPV-16/18 antibodies in serum and cervico-vaginal secretions (CVS) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Serious adverse events (SAEs) were recorded throughout the follow-up period. Seropositivity rates for anti-HPV-16 remained high (≥96.3%) in all age groups 10 years after first vaccination. It was found that 99.2% of 15–25-year olds remained seropositive for anti-HPV-18 compared to 93.7% and 83.8% of 26–45-year olds and 45–55-year olds, respectively. Geometric mean titers (GMT) remained above natural infection levels in all age groups. Anti-HPV-16 and anti-HPV-18 titers were at least 5.3-fold and 3.1-fold higher than titers observed after natural infection, respectively, and were predicted to persist above natural infection levels for ≥30 years in all age groups. At Year 10, anti-HPV-16/18 antibody titers in subjects aged 15–25 years remained above plateau levels observed in previous studies. Correlation coefficients for antibody titers in serum and CVS were 0.64 (anti-HPV-16) and 0.38 (anti-HPV-18). This study concluded that vaccinated females aged 15–55 years elicited sustained immunogenicity with an acceptable safety profile up to 10 years after primary vaccination, suggesting long-term protection against HPV

    NNLO QCD corrections to leptonic observables in top-quark pair production and decay

    We calculate a comprehensive set of spin correlations and differential distributions in top-quark pair production and decay to dilepton final states. This is the first time such a complete study is performed at next-to-next-to leading order in QCD. Both inclusive and fiducial distributions are presented and analyzed. Good agreement between NNLO QCD predictions and data is found. We demonstrate that it is possible to perform high-precision comparisons of fixed-order calculations with fiducial-level data. Subtleties of the top quark definition are raised and clarified. Some of those are found to have a very significant impact on top-quark pair production at absolute threshold
