Penalized Spline Joint Models for Longitudinal and Time-To-Event Data

    Get PDF
The joint models for longitudinal data and time-to-event data have recently received numerous attention in clinical and epidemiologic studies. Our interest is in modeling the relationship between event time outcomes and internal time-dependent covariates. In practice, the longitudinal responses often show non-linear and fluctuated curves. Therefore, the main aim of this chapter is to use penalized splines with a truncated polynomial basis to parameterize the non-linear longitudinal process. Then, the linear mixed effects model is applied to subject-specific curves and to control the smoothing. The association between the dropout process and longitudinal outcomes is modeled through a proportional hazard model. Two types of baseline risk functions are considered, namely a Gompertz distribution and a piecewise constant model. The resulting models are referred to as penalized spline joint models; an extension of the standard linear joint models

Coronavirus affects the education system in the world. Schools, colleges, and universities are closed to control the spread of the coronavirus. School closure brings difficulties for students, teachers, and parents. So, online learning is a solution to continue the education system. However, the lack of network infrastructures, computers, and internet access is challenging. This paper aims to review the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education and status of digital transformation in education in Vietnam. Verify the opportunities and challenges in the digital transformation in education and recommend some issues that need to do be concerned to promote the transformation process in education in Vietnam.O coronavírus afeta o sistema educacional no mundo.

The revolution in online learning and implication in Vietnamese universities

    Get PDF
Online education has rapidly become popular worldwide in higher education. There are massive open online courses which could be found in Coursera and EDX. These courses ensure the availability and the accessibility of the online learning through videos with subtitles. Online learning not only gives students unprecedented opportunities to learn, but also reduces the cost of higher education. However, online learning presents unit challenges compared to traditional learning, especially in Vietnamese education. In this paper, we present the advantages and disadvantages of online learning. In particular, we will show the advantages and disadvantages of taking online courses of Vietnamese students. We will also share our experience as a tutor of Funix University which is the first online university in Vietnam. In addition, we will give feasible suggestions to improve the quality of online learning in Vietnamese universities, especially the quality of assessment in online learning. These suggestions could be applied in building new online courses in the universities

MACRO-ZOOPLANKTON ABUNDANCE IN RELATION TO METAL ACCUMULATION AND WATER QUALITY IN TRUC BACH LAKE

Urban lake pollution is one of the serious issues due to suffering of waste discharged from householders. However, there is a gap of knowledge about the diversity of zooplankton species and how metals accumulate in zooplankton in urban ecosystems. We addressed this by determining the rule of blooming macro-zooplankton in Truc Bach lake and levels of two essential metals: copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) and of three non-essential metals: arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) in water samples were determined. The results showed that Cladocerans and copepods are macro-zooplankton dominant species in Truc Bach Lake. Water temperature significantly affects the variety of copepod blooming. Arsenic concentration in water collected from the lake exceeded the safety level of current Vietnamese regulation. As concentration in macro-zooplankton positively correlated with metal concentrations in the water (p 0.05) while the concentration of Cu, Zn, and Pb in water has no significant correlation with the metal in zooplankton’s body. The relative abundance of adult copepods in Truc Bach lake had a negative correlation with As concentration in water (p = 0.01). The higher As concentration in water, the lower relative abundance of copepods was found in the sample

The Impact of FDI, International Trade, and National Economy on People’s Standard of Living in ASEAN Countries

    Get PDF
This research paper analyzes the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI), international trade, and national economy on the standard of living of people in ASEAN member countries, using data from 2012-2021. The study uses data from this period to examine the effects of these variables on the standard of living in ASEAN member countries. The results indicate that international trade and national economy have a significant influence on people's standard of living in the region. However, the effect of FDI varies depending on the level of development of the country. While FDI doesn't have much effect on developing countries, it has a negative impact on developed countries. The study also provides insights for policymakers on how to promote economic growth and improve the quality of life for people in the ASEAN. Osteogenesis activity of fractions extracted from Clinacanthus nutans (Burm. F.) Lindau

Osteogenesis activity of fractions extracted from Clinacanthus nutans was evaluated on an in vitro model using osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells. The results showed that all fractions, including ethanol (EtOH), n-hexane, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and butanol (BuOH) were not significantly toxic to the osteoblast cells at the test concentrations of 5, 10, 25, and 50 µg/mL. The EtOH and EtOAc fractions exhibited the highest osteogenesis activity in terms of enhancement of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and mineralization activity of MC3T3-E1 cells, especially the EtOAc fraction which increased ALP activity up to 30% and mineralization activity up to 100%. Thus, the EtOAc fraction shows osteogenesis activity through stimulating activites of the two markers for bone generation including ALP and mineralization in osteoblast cells. The fraction is now under extensive investigation to isolate and fully understand the modes of action of the active compounds.
