    Multi-Person Pose Estimation with Local Joint-to-Person Associations

    Despite of the recent success of neural networks for human pose estimation, current approaches are limited to pose estimation of a single person and cannot handle humans in groups or crowds. In this work, we propose a method that estimates the poses of multiple persons in an image in which a person can be occluded by another person or might be truncated. To this end, we consider multi-person pose estimation as a joint-to-person association problem. We construct a fully connected graph from a set of detected joint candidates in an image and resolve the joint-to-person association and outlier detection using integer linear programming. Since solving joint-to-person association jointly for all persons in an image is an NP-hard problem and even approximations are expensive, we solve the problem locally for each person. On the challenging MPII Human Pose Dataset for multiple persons, our approach achieves the accuracy of a state-of-the-art method, but it is 6,000 to 19,000 times faster.Comment: Accepted to European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) Workshops, Crowd Understanding, 201

    Exploration of a potent PI3 kinase/mTOR inhibitor as a novel anti-fibrotic agent in IPF

    © 2016 BMJ Publishing Group Ltd & British Thoracic Society.Rationale Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the most rapidly progressive and fatal of all fibrotic conditions with no curative therapies. Common pathomechanisms between IPF and cancer are increasingly recognised, including dysfunctional pan-PI3 kinase (PI3K) signalling as a driver of aberrant proliferative responses. GSK2126458 is a novel, potent, PI3K/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor which has recently completed phase I trials in the oncology setting. Our aim was to establish a scientific and dosing framework for PI3K inhibition with this agent in IPF at a clinically developable dose. Methods We explored evidence for pathway signalling in IPF lung tissue and examined the potency of GSK2126458 in fibroblast functional assays and precision-cut IPF lung tissue. We further explored the potential of IPF patient-derived bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells to serve as pharmacodynamic biosensors to monitor GSK2126458 target engagement within the lung. Results We provide evidence for PI3K pathway activation in fibrotic foci, the cardinal lesions in IPF. GSK2126458 inhibited PI3K signalling and functional responses in IPF-derived lung fibroblasts, inhibiting Akt phosphorylation in IPF lung tissue and BAL derived cells with comparable potency. Integration of these data with GSK2126458 pharmacokinetic data from clinical trials in cancer enabled modelling of an optimal dosing regimen for patients with IPF. Conclusions Our data define PI3K as a promising therapeutic target in IPF and provide a scientific and dosing framework for progressing GSK2126458 to clinical testing in this disease setting.     Person Re-identification by Articulated Appearance Matching

    Abstract Re-identification of pedestrians in video-surveillance settings can be ef-fectively approached by treating each human figure as an articulated body, whose pose is estimated through the framework of Pictorial Structures (PS). In this way, we can focus selectively on similarities between the appearance of body parts to recognize a previously seen individual. In fact, this strategy resembles what humans employ to solve the same task in the absence of facial details or other reliable bio-metric information. Based on these insights, we show how to perform single image re-identification by matching signatures coming from articulated appearances, and how to strengthen this process in multi-shot re-identification by using Custom Picto-rial Structures (CPS) to produce improved body localizations and appearance signa-tures. Moreover, we provide a complete and detailed breakdown of the system that surrounds these core procedures, with several novel arrangements devised for effi-ciency and flexibility. Finally, we test our approach on several public benchmarks, obtaining convincing results.

    Actuation of Micro-Optomechanical Systems Via Cavity-Enhanced Optical Dipole Forces

    We demonstrate a new type of optomechanical system employing a movable, micron-scale waveguide evanescently-coupled to a high-Q optical microresonator. Micron-scale displacements of the waveguide are observed for milliwatt(mW)-level optical input powers. Measurement of the spatial variation of the force on the waveguide indicates that it arises from a cavity-enhanced optical dipole force due to the stored optical field of the resonator. This force is used to realize an all-optical tunable filter operating with sub-mW control power. A theoretical model of the system shows the maximum achievable force to be independent of the intrinsic Q of the optical resonator and to scale inversely with the cavity mode volume, suggesting that such forces may become even more effective as devices approach the nanoscale.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures.     Are genetic risk factors for psychosis also associated with dimension-specific psychotic experiences in adolescence?

    Psychosis has been hypothesised to be a continuously distributed quantitative phenotype and disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder represent its extreme manifestations. Evidence suggests that common genetic variants play an important role in liability to both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Here we tested the hypothesis that these common variants would also influence psychotic experiences measured dimensionally in adolescents in the general population. Our aim was to test whether schizophrenia and bipolar disorder polygenic risk scores (PRS), as well as specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously identified as risk variants for schizophrenia, were associated with adolescent dimension-specific psychotic experiences. Self-reported Paranoia, Hallucinations, Cognitive Disorganisation, Grandiosity, Anhedonia, and Parent-rated Negative Symptoms, as measured by the Specific Psychotic Experiences Questionnaire (SPEQ), were assessed in a community sample of 2,152 16-year-olds. Polygenic risk scores were calculated using estimates of the log of odds ratios from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium GWAS stage-1 mega-analysis of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The polygenic risk analyses yielded no significant associations between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder PRS and the SPEQ measures. The analyses on the 28 individual SNPs previously associated with schizophrenia found that two SNPs in TCF4 returned a significant association with the SPEQ Paranoia dimension, rs17512836 (p-value=2.57x10-4) and rs9960767 (p-value=6.23x10-4). Replication in an independent sample of 16-year-olds (N=3,427) assessed using the Psychotic-Like Symptoms Questionnaire (PLIKS-Q), a composite measure of multiple positive psychotic experiences, failed to yield significant results. Future research with PRS derived from larger samples, as well as larger adolescent validation samples, would improve the predictive power to test these hypotheses further. The challenges of relating adult clinical diagnostic constructs such as schizophrenia to adolescent psychotic experiences at a genetic level are discussed

    Numerical study of oblique detonation initiations with chain-branching kinetics

    Oblique detonations induced by semi-infinite wedge are simulated by solving Euler equations with chain branching kinetics. Numerical results show the initiation can be triggered by either the abrupt transition or smooth transition, dependent on incident Ma Minand wedge angle 胃, and then their effects on the oblique detonation angle 尾 and initiation length Liniare analyzed. When 胃 increases, Linidecreases monotonically but 尾 has a minimum value, corresponding to 胃 = 29掳 in this study. When Min decreases, both Liniand 尾 increases monotonically until Mindecreases below certain critical value, Min= 9.2 in this study. Then low inflow Ma effects generate the maximum Lini, with the complex of ODW (oblique detonation wave), SODW (secondary oblique detonation wave) and SIDW (self-ignition deflagration wave). The transient process is observed, demonstrating the structure can self-adjust to find a proper position. The wave structure suggests two wave/heat release process determining the detonation initiation. In the cases with high Minfeatured by SIDW, the oblique-shock induced self-ignition dominates, and Liniincreases when Mindecreases.     Two loop electroweak corrections to BˉXsγ\bar B\rightarrow X_s\gamma and Bs0μ+μB_s^0\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^- in the B-LSSM

    The rare decays BˉXsγ\bar B\rightarrow X_s\gamma and Bs0μ+μB_s^0\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^- are important to research new physics beyond standard model. In this work, we investigate two loop electroweak corrections to BˉXsγ\bar B\rightarrow X_s\gamma and Bs0μ+μB_s^0\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^- in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM with local BLB-L gauge symmetry (B-LSSM), under a minimal flavor violating assumption for the soft breaking terms. In this framework, new particles and new definition of squarks can affect the theoretical predictions of these two processes, with respect to the MSSM. Considering the constraints from updated experimental data, the numerical results show that the B-LSSM can fit the experimental data for the branching ratios of BˉXsγ\bar B\rightarrow X_s\gamma and Bs0μ+μB_s^0\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-.
