Effects of Crop Diversification Upon the Variability of Income for Eastern- Southeastern South Dakota
Dryland farming in eastern and south-eastern South Dakota is characterized by diversified crop production. A major reason farmers in this area diversify is for income stability. Diversification evens out the high variability in income associated with specializing in one crop. Resting vs. active: a meta-analysis of the intra- and inter-specific associations between minimum, sustained, and maximum metabolic rates in vertebrates
Variation in aerobic capacity has far reaching consequences for the physiology, ecology, and evolution of vertebrates. Whether at rest or active, animals are constrained to operate within the energetic bounds determined by their minimum (minMR) and sustained or maximum metabolic rates (upperMR). MinMR and upperMR can differ considerably among individuals and species but are often presumed to be mechanistically linked to one another. Specifically, minMR is thought to reflect the idling cost of the machinery needed to support upperMR. However, previous analyses based on limited datasets have come to conflicting conclusions regarding the generality and strength of their association.
Here we conduct the first comprehensive assessment of their relationship, based on a large number of published estimates of both the intra-specific (n = 176) and inter-specific (n = 41) phenotypic correlations between minMR and upperMR, estimated as either exercise-induced maximum metabolic rate (VO2max), cold-induced summit metabolic rate (Msum), or daily energy expenditure (DEE).
Our meta-analysis shows that there is a general positive association between minMR and upperMR that is shared among vertebrate taxonomic classes. However, there was stronger evidence for intra-specific correlations between minMR and Msum and between minMR and DEE than there was for a correlation between minMR and VO2max across different taxa. As expected, inter-specific correlation estimates were consistently higher than intra-specific estimates across all traits and vertebrate classes.
An interesting exception to this general trend was observed in mammals, which contrast with birds and exhibit no correlation between minMR and Msum. We speculate that this is due to the evolution and recruitment of brown fat as a thermogenic tissue, which illustrates how some species and lineages might circumvent this seemingly general association.
We conclude that, in spite of some variability across taxa and traits, the contention that minMR and upperMR are positively correlated generally holds true both within and across vertebrate species. Ecological and comparative studies should therefore take into consideration the possibility that variation in any one of these traits might partly reflect correlated responses to selection on other metabolic parameters
The Centurion 18 telescope of the Wise Observatory
We describe the second telescope of the Wise Observatory, a 0.46-m Centurion
18 (C18) installed in 2005, which enhances significantly the observing
possibilities. The telescope operates from a small dome and is equipped with a
large-format CCD camera. In the last two years this telescope was intensively
used in a variety of monitoring projects.
The operation of the C18 is now automatic, requiring only start-up at the
beginning of a night and close-down at dawn. The observations are mostly
performed remotely from the Tel Aviv campus or even from the observer's home.
The entire facility was erected for a component cost of about 70k$ and a labor
investment of a total of one man-year.
We describe three types of projects undertaken with this new facility: the
measurement of asteroid light variability with the purpose of determining
physical parameters and binarity, the following-up of transiting extrasolar
planets, and the study of AGN variability. The successful implementation of the
C18 demonstrates the viability of small telescopes in an age of huge

Novel MCM Interconnection Analysis Using Capacitive Charge Generation (CCG)
A new SEM technique, Capacitive Charge Generation (CCG), has been developed to rapidly image MCM interconnection continuity. The new technique uses low primary electron beam energies (< 2.0 keV), very high beam currents (>100 nA), and fast electron beam scan rates (>5 frames/second) to probe buried conductors in MCMS. For these conditions, new surface charging effects have been observed that enable examination of conductors under thick insulating layers. CCG has been applied to conductors covered by over 90 {mu}m of polymer dielectric. The physics of CCG signal generation and applications for MCM failure analysis are described
Searches for very high energy gamma rays from blazars with CANGAROO-III telescope in 2005-2009
We have searched for very high energy (VHE) gamma rays from four blazars
using the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope. We report the
results of the observations of H 2356-309, PKS 2155-304, PKS 0537-441, and 3C
279, performed from 2005 to 2009, applying a new analysis to suppress the
effects of the position dependence of Cherenkov images in the field of view. No
significant VHE gamma ray emission was detected from any of the four blazars.
The GeV gamma-ray spectra of these objects were obtained by analyzing Fermi/LAT
archival data. Non-simultaneous wide range (radio to VHE gamma-ray bands)
spectral energy distributions (SEDs) including CANGAROO-III upper limits, GeV
gamma-ray spectra, and archival data are discussed using a one-zone synchrotron
self-Compton (SSC) model in combination with a external Compton (EC) radiation.
The HBLs (H 2356-309 and PKS 2155-304) can be explained by a simple SSC model,
and PKS 0537-441 and 3C 279 are well modeled by a combination of SSC and EC
model. We find a consistency with the blazar sequence in terms of strength of

Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry Parameters in and
We have measured the weak decay asymmetry parameters (\aLC ) for two \LC\
decay modes. Our measurements are \aLC = -0.94^{+0.21+0.12}_{-0.06-0.06} for
the decay mode and \aLC = -0.45\pm 0.31 \pm
0.06 for the decay mode . By combining these
measurements with the previously measured decay rates, we have extracted the
parity-violating and parity-conserving amplitudes. These amplitudes are used to

We have studied the leptonic decay of the resonance into tau
pairs using the CLEO II detector. A clean sample of tau pair events is
identified via events containing two charged particles where exactly one of the
particles is an identified electron. We find . The result is consistent with
