"Clinical exercise physiologists are university-trained practitioners who provide exercise services for people living with chronic disease, disability or injury, and are recognised as Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) under a national system administered by the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS). Exercise is now accepted by both the scientific and medical communities to be highly therapeutic for many chronic medical conditions prevalent in Australia today, as well as its value in prevention. A major breakthrough occurred for the AEP on 1 January 2006 when the federal Department of Health and Ageing formally recognised the entry of the AEP into the domain of allied health to deliver Medicare-rebated exercise services for those with chronic diseases.
