Photoassociative spectroscopy at long range in ultracold strontium
We report photoassociative spectroscopy of Sr in a magneto-optical
trap operating on the intercombination line at 689 nm.
Photoassociative transitions are driven with a laser red-detuned by 600-2400
MHz from the atomic resonance at 461 nm. Photoassociation
takes place at extremely large internuclear separation, and the
photoassociative spectrum is strongly affected by relativistic retardation. A
fit of the transition frequencies determines the atomic lifetime
( ns) and resolves a discrepancy between experiment and
recent theoretical calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitte
Delocalized-localized transition in a semiconductor two-dimensional honeycomb lattice
We report the magneto-transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas
in a modulation-doped AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure subjected to a lateral
potential with honeycomb geometry. Periodic oscillations of the
magneto-resistance and a delocalized-localized transition are shown by applying
a gate voltage. We argue that electrons in such artificial-graphene lattices
offer a promising approach for the simulation of quantum phases dictated by
Coulomb interactions
The Dependence of the Soft X-ray Properties of LMXBs on the Metallicity of Their Environment
We determine the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs) which reside in globular clusters of M31, as well as five
LMXBs in Galactic globular clusters and in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the
ROSAT PSPC. We find a trend in the X-ray properties of the LMXBs as a function
of globular cluster metallicity. The spectra of LMXBs become progressively
softer as the metallicity of its environment increases. The one M31 globular
cluster LMXB in our sample which has a metallicity greater than solar has
spectral properties similar to those of LMXBs in the bulge of M31, but markedly
different from those which reside in low metallicity globular clusters, both in
M31 and the Galaxy. The spectral properties of this high metallicity LMXB is
also similar to those of X-ray faint early-type galaxies. This lends support to
the claim that a majority of the X-ray emission from these X-ray faint
early-type galaxies results from LMXBs and not hot gas, as is the case in their
X-ray bright counterparts.Comment: 5 pages, 2 embedded Postscript figures, uses emulateapj.sty,

New dipeptides containing thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid derivatives: Synthesis and characterization using NMR techniques and X-ray data
New dipeptides, structural analogues of known immunomodulating agents, were prepared by stereospecific condensation between 2-substituted thiazolidine-4-carboxylate esters with N-substituted L-proline or L- thiaproline. The structure of these compounds has been elucidated by combination of NMR methods and X-ray analysis. In addition, NMR measurements on dipeptides indicated the presence of S-cis and S-trans conformers around the amide bonds
Spectroscopic determination of the s-wave scattering lengths of 86Sr and 88Sr
We report the use of photoassociative spectroscopy to determine the ground
state s-wave scattering lengths for the main bosonic isotopes of strontium,
86Sr and 88Sr. Photoassociative transitions are driven with a laser red-detuned
by up to 1400 GHz from the 1S0-1P1 atomic resonance at 461 nm. A minimum in the
transition amplitude for 86Sr at -494+/-5 GHz allows us to determine the
scattering lengths 610a0 < a86 < 2300a0 for 86Sr and a much smaller value of
-1a0 < a88 < 13a0 for 88Sr.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Time-Dependent Current Partition in Mesoscopic Conductors
The currents at the terminals of a mesoscopic conductor are evaluated in the
presence of slowly oscillating potentials applied to the contacts of the
sample. The need to find a charge and current conserving solution to this
dynamic current partition problem is emphasized. We present results for the
electro-chemical admittance describing the long range Coulomb interaction in a
Hartree approach. For multiply connected samples we discuss the symmetry of the
admittance under reversal of an Aharonov-Bohm flux.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures upon request, IBM RC 1971
