Extracting quantum dynamics from genetic learning algorithms through principal control analysis
Genetic learning algorithms are widely used to control ultrafast optical
pulse shapes for photo-induced quantum control of atoms and molecules. An
unresolved issue is how to use the solutions found by these algorithms to learn
about the system's quantum dynamics. We propose a simple method based on
covariance analysis of the control space, which can reveal the degrees of
freedom in the effective control Hamiltonian. We have applied this technique to
stimulated Raman scattering in liquid methanol. A simple model of two-mode

Feasibility of Impact-Acoustic Emissions for Detection of Damaged Wheat Kernels
Cataloged from PDF version of article.A non-destructive, real time device was developed to detect insect damage, sprout damage, and
scab damage in kernels of wheat. Kernels are impacted onto a steel plate and the resulting acoustic
signal analyzed to detect damage. The acoustic signal was processed using four different methods:
modeling of the signal in the time-domain, computing time-domain signal variances and maximums
in short-time windows, analysis of the frequency spectrum magnitudes, and analysis of a derivative
spectrum. Features were used as inputs to a stepwise discriminant analysis routine, which selected a
small subset of features for accurate classification using a neural network. For a network presented
with only insect damaged kernels (IDK) with exit holes and undamaged kernels, 87% of the former
and 98% of the latter were correctly classified. It was also possible to distinguish undamaged, IDK,
sprout-damaged, and scab-damaged kernels.

Multi-wavelength analysis of 18um-selected galaxies in the AKARI/IRC monitor field towards the North Ecliptic Pole
We present an initial analysis of AKARI 18um-selected galaxies using all 9
photometric bands at 2-24um available in the InfraRed Camera (IRC), in order to
demonstrate new capabilities of AKARI cosmological surveys. We detected 72
sources at 18um in an area of 50.2 arcmin^2 in the AKARI/IRC monitor field
towards the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). From this sample, 25 galaxies with
probable redshifts z>~ 0.5 are selected with a single colour cut (N2-N3>0.1)
for a detailed SED analysis with ground-based BVRi'z'JK data. Using an SED
radiative transfer model of starbursts covering the wavelength range UV --
submm, we derive photometric redshifts from the optical-MIR SEDs of
18um-selected galaxies. From the best-fit SED models, we show that the IRC
all-band photometry is capable of tracing the steep rise in flux at the blue
side of the PAH 6.2um emission feature. This indicates that the IRC all-band
photometry is useful to constrain the redshift of infrared galaxies,
specifically for dusty galaxies with a less prominent 4000A break. Also, we
find that the flux dip between the PAH 7.7 and 11.2um emission feature is
recognizable in the observed SEDs of galaxies at z~1. By using such a colour
anomaly due to the PAH and silicate absorption features, unique samples of
ULIRGs at z~1, `silicate-break' galaxies, can be constructed from large
cosmological surveys of AKARI towards the NEP, i.e. the NEP-Deep and NEP-Wide
survey. This pilot study suggests the possibility of detecting many interesting
galaxy properties in the NEP-Deep and Wide surveys, such as a systematic
difference in SEDs between high- and low-z ULIRGs, and a large variation of the

Torsion–rotation global analysis of the first three torsional states (νt = 0, 1, 2) and terahertz database for methanol
Stimulated by recent THz measurements of the methanol spectrum in one of our laboratories, undertaken in support of NASA programs related to the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), we have carried out a global analysis of available microwave and high-resolution infrared data for the first three torsional states (νt = 0, 1, 2), and for J values up to 30. This global fit of approximately 5600 frequency measurements and 19 000 Fourier transform far infrared (FTFIR) wavenumber measurements to 119 parameters reaches the estimated experimental measurement accuracy for the FTFIR transitions, and about twice the estimated experimental measurement accuracy for the microwave, submillimeter-wave, and terahertz transitions. The present fit is essentially a continuation of our earlier work, but we have greatly expanded our previous data set and have added a large number of new torsion–rotation interaction terms to the Hamiltonian in our previously used computer program. The results, together with a number of calculated (but unmeasured) transitions, including their line strength, estimated uncertainty, and lower state energy, are made available in the supplementary material as a database formatted to be useful for astronomical searches. Some discussion of several open spectroscopic problems, e.g., (i) an improved notation for the numerous parameters in the torsion–rotation Hamiltonian, (ii) possible causes of the failure to fit frequency measurements to the estimated measurement uncertainty, and (iii) pitfalls to be avoided when intercomparing apparently identical parameters from the internal axis method and the rho axis method are also given
Diffusion, peer pressure and tailed distributions
We present a general, physically motivated non-linear and non-local advection
equation in which the diffusion of interacting random walkers competes with a
local drift arising from a kind of peer pressure. We show, using a mapping to
an integrable dynamical system, that on varying a parameter, the steady state
behaviour undergoes a transition from the standard diffusive behavior to a
localized stationary state characterized by a tailed distribution. Finally, we
show that recent empirical laws on economic growth can be explained as a
