Detection of brown dwarfs by the micro-lensing of unresolved stars
The presence of brown dwarfs in the dark galactic halo could be detected
through their gravitational lensing effect and experiments under way monitor
about one million stars to observe a few lensing events per year. We show that
if the photon flux from a galaxy is measured with a good precision, it is not

Performance evaluation of currently available VLSI implementations satisfying U-interface requirements for an ISDN in South Africa.
A project report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering, University of the
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the
degree of Master of Science in Engineering.This project report examines the performance of three VLSI U-interface implementations
satisfying the requirements of Basic Access on an ISDN.
The systems evaluated are the Intel 89120,Siemens PEB2090 and STC DSP144, operating
on 2BIQ, MMS4J and SU32 line codes respectively.
Before evaluating the three abovementioned systems, a review of the underlying principles
of U-interface technology is presented. Included in the review are aspects of transmission
line theory, line coding, echo-cancellation, decision feedback equalisation, and pulse density
modulation. The functional specifications of the three systems are then presented followed
by a practical evaluation of each system.
As an aid to testing the transmission systems, an evaluation board has been designed and
built. The latter provides the necessary functionality to correctly activate each system, as
well as the appropriate interfacing requirements for the error-rate tester.
The U-interface transmission systems are evaluated on a number of test-loops, comprising
sections of cable varying in length and gauge. Additionally, impairments are injected into
data-carrying cables, in order to test the performance of each system in the presence of
noise. The results of each test are recorded and analysed.
Finally, a recommendation is made in favour of the 2BIQ U-interface. It is shown to offer
superior transmission performance, at the expense of a slightly higher transmit-power level.Andrew Chakane 201
Triangles and Girth in Disk Graphs and Transmission Graphs
Let S subset R^2 be a set of n sites, where each s in S has an associated radius r_s > 0. The disk graph D(S) is the undirected graph with vertex set S and an undirected edge between two sites s, t in S if and only if |st| <= r_s + r_t, i.e., if the disks with centers s and t and respective radii r_s and r_t intersect. Disk graphs are used to model sensor networks. Similarly, the transmission graph T(S) is the directed graph with vertex set S and a directed edge from a site s to a site t if and only if |st| <= r_s, i.e., if t lies in the disk with center s and radius r_s.
We provide algorithms for detecting (directed) triangles and, more generally, computing the length of a shortest cycle (the girth) in D(S) and in T(S). These problems are notoriously hard in general, but better solutions exist for special graph classes such as planar graphs. We obtain similarly efficient results for disk graphs and for transmission graphs. More precisely, we show that a shortest (Euclidean) triangle in D(S) and in T(S) can be found in O(n log n) expected time, and that the (weighted) girth of D(S) can be found in O(n log n) expected time. For this, we develop new tools for batched range searching that may be of independent interest
The Art / Crime Archive: An Anti-Boredom Space
This paper reports on an ongoing web-based project devoted to the study of deviant art and creative crime called the Art / Crime Archive: www.artcrimearchive.org. The Art / Crime Archive (ACA) is a collaborative laboratory, teaching center, and web-based platform devoted to the study of this space. The ACA is organized by an artist, a criminologist, and a computer engineer. The working process of the ACA involves locating, archiving, and discussing visual, audio, and text artifacts that support this shadow space. The work product is a dynamic archive which can be configured for a multiplicity of contexts—art exhibitions, academic presentations, community awareness panels, etc. The ACA’s objective is to foment a dynamic, dialectical, and innovative discussion of deviant art and creative crime
