    Jacobsen catalyst immobilized on chitosan membrane as interface catalyst in organic/aqueous system for alkene oxidation

    The Jacobsen catalyst, Mn(salen), was immobilized in chitosan membrane. The obtained Mn(salen)-Chit was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TC), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), degree of N-acetylation by (1)H NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of the encapsulated catalyst displayed the typical bands of the Jacobsen catalyst, and the FT-IR presented an absorption band characteristic of the imines present in the Jacobsen catalyst. The chitosan membranes were available, in a biphasic system, as a catalytic barrier between two different phases: an organic substrate phase (cyclooctene or styrene) and an aqueous solution of either m-CPBA, t-BuOOH or H(2)O(2), and dismissing the need for phase transfer agents and leading to better product yields compared with the catalyst in homogeneous medium.     Warming changes the life history composition of marine fish communities at high latitudes

    Across marine ecosystems, species are redistributing as a response to increased sea temperatures. In the Arctic, rapid warming causes poleward shifts of boreal species. Which species are redistributing and the drivers of their movements can be related to their life history traits. Here, we aimed to characterize and analyze the spatio-temporal changes in the life history strategy (LHS) composition of fish communities in the Barents Sea (2004-2017). We performed an archetype analysis to characterize species’ LHS based on their life history traits and related it to the equilibrium-periodic-opportunistic framework. Fish species in temperate ecosystems were documented to be largely distributed along the opportunistic-periodic continuum, whereas many fish species in the Barents Sea are distributed along the opportunistic-equilibrium continuum, illustrating the specificity of Arctic fish LHS. During the study period, boreal periodic species showed an increase in the central Barents Sea, a zoogeographic transition area. Simultaneously, Arctic opportunistic species retracted to cold waters, and the abundance of equilibrium strategists increased in the eastern Barents Sea. The expansion of periodic species may be explained by the configuration of their traits. This includes a high reproductive potential, broader diet, and migratory behavior. These traits might increase their tolerance and adaptive capacity to a changing environment. Fish LHS play a crucial role in fisheries management, particularly in promoting better fishing practices for vulnerable populations. By understanding the various LHS adopted by different fish species and their environmental preferences, fisheries managers can develop informed fishing strategies on a broader scale.publishedVersio

    Application of artificial neural networks in the prediction of sugarcane juice Pol

    ABSTRACT Innovative techniques that seek to minimize the costs of production and the laboriousness of certain operations are one of the great challenges in the sugar-energy sector nowadays. Thus, the objective of the present study was to estimate the Pol values of sugarcane juice as a function of °Brix and wet cake weight (WCW) using artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. A database was organized consisting of 204 technological analyses from a field experiment with 15 treatments and 2 years of evaluation. 75% of the data were used for the calibration of the model and 25% for its validation. Multilayer Perceptron ANNs were used for calibration and validation of the data. Before calibration, the variables were normalized. The training algorithm used was backpropagation and the activation function was the sigmoid. The ANNs were established with two hidden layers and the number of neurons ranging from 4 to 20 in each. The 15 ANNs with the lowest root mean square errors were randomly presented by the software, among which 6 were chosen to verify the accuracy. The ANNs had a high accuracy in the estimation of sugarcane juice Pol, both in the calibration phase (R2 = 0.948, RMSE = 0.36%) and in the validation (R2 = 0.878, RMSE = 0.41%), and can replace the standard method of analysis. Simpler networks can be trained to have the same accuracy as more complex networks

    Efficacy and safety of once weekly subcutaneous idrabiotaparinux in the treatment of patients with symptomatic deep venous thrombosis.

    BACKGROUND: Idraparinux, a long acting inhibitor of factor (F) Xa, is as effective as standard anticoagulant therapy for patients with symptomatic deep venous thrombosis. We investigated the potential use of the biotinylated molecule, idrabiotaparinux. Biotinylation enables reversal of the anticoagulant effect. METHODS: We performed a randomized double-blind trial in 757 patients with symptomatic deep venous thrombosis, comparing equimolar doses of idrabiotaparinux (3 mg) with idraparinux (2.5 mg), both given subcutaneously, once weekly for 6 months. Inhibition of FXa activity was measured at days 15, 36, 57, 92 and 183. The efficacy outcome was recurrent venous thromboembolism. The safety outcomes were clinically relevant bleeding and death. RESULTS: Inhibition of FXa was similar in the two treatment groups at each time point of measurement. Recurrent venous thromboembolism during the 6-month treatment period occurred in nine of 386 patients (2.3%) in the idrabiotaparinux group and in 12 of 371 patients (3.2%) in the idraparinux group, a difference of - 0.9% (95% confidence interval, -3.2-1.4%). The incidence of clinically relevant bleeding was 5.2% in the idrabiotaparinux group and 7.3% in the idraparinux group (P = 0.29), a difference of - 2.1% (95% confidence interval, -5.6-1.4%). Six patients (1.6%) who received idrabiotaparinux died, compared with 12 patients (3.2%) given idraparinux, a difference of - 1.7% (95% confidence interval, -3.9-0.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Idrabiotaparinux has a similar time course of FXa inhibition, efficacy and safety to idraparinux for the treatment of deep venous thrombosis
