Summary and Outlook of the International Workshop on Aging Phenomena in Gaseous Detectors (DESY, Hamburg, October, 2001)
High Energy Physics experiments are currently entering a new era which
requires the operation of gaseous particle detectors at unprecedented high
rates and integrated particle fluxes. Full functionality of such detectors over
the lifetime of an experiment in a harsh radiation environment is of prime
concern to the involved experimenters. New classes of gaseous detectors such as
large-scale straw-type detectors, Micro-pattern Gas Detectors and related
detector types with their own specific aging effects have evolved since the
first workshop on wire chamber aging was held at LBL, Berkeley in 1986. In
light of these developments and as detector aging is a notoriously complex
field, the goal of the workshop was to provide a forum for interested
experimentalists to review the progress in understanding of aging effects and
to exchange recent experiences. A brief summary of the main results and
experiences reported at the 2001 workshop is presented, with the goal of
providing a systematic review of aging effects in state-of-the-art and future

Synergistic Gravity and the Role of Resonances in GRS-Inspired Braneworlds
We consider 5D braneworld models of quasi-localized gravity in which 4D
gravity is reproduced at intermediate scales while the extra dimension opens up
at both the very short and the very long distances, where the geometry is flat.
Our main interest is the interplay between the zero mode of these models,
whenever a normalizable zero mode exists, and the effects of zero energy
graviton resonant modes coming from the contributions of massive KK modes. We
first consider a compactified version of the GRS model and find that
quasi-localized gravity is characterized by a scale for which both the
resonance and the zero mode have significant contribution to 4D gravity. Above
this scale, gravity is primarily mediated by the zero mode, while the resonance
gives only minor corrections. Next, we consider an asymmetric version of the
standard non-compact GRS model, characterized by different cosmological
constants on each AdS side. We show that a resonance is present but the
asymmetry, through the form of the localizing potential, can weaken it,
resulting in a shorter lifetime and, thus, in a shorter distance scale for 4D
gravity. As a third model exhibiting quasi-localization, we consider a version
of the GRS model in which the central positive tension brane has been replaced

Characterization of MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) Flow Channel (May 2009)
MicroElectroMechanical System (MEMS) devices are integrations between mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and microelectronic engineering. There are many different applications for MEMS such as micro mirrors, pumps, nozzle, and a plethora of sensor types. The Microelectronic engineering department at Rochester Institute of Technology offers a class in MEMS. Within this class, many MEMS applications are further studied and created, one being a gas flow sensor. In 2008, George Manos created a packaging fabrication process for the RIT flow sensor for further future analysis. Along with the use of the package, Dr. Lynn Fuller and Jessica Marks created the tested sensors. Through fluidic and geometrical analysis the flow channel can be modeled such that input pressures can be correlated to channel dimensions and desired flow out of channel. Furthermore, predicted models of varying channel sizes and flow rate were modeled with 2% to 30% error from experimental and modeled results
Increase in pertussis cases along with high prevalence of two emerging genotypes of Bordetella pertussis in PerĂș, 2012
As has occurred in many regions worldwide, in 2012 the incidence of pertussis increased in PerĂș. This epidemiologic situation has been associated with a waning vaccine-induced immunity and the adaptation of Bordetella pertussis to vaccine-induced immunity along with improved diagnostic methods. Methods: The study comprised a total of 840 pertussis-suspected cases reported in PerĂș during 2012. We summarize here the distribution of pertussis cases according to age and immunization status along with the immunization-coverage rate. Laboratory diagnosis was performed by culture test and real-time polymerase-chain reaction (PCR). B. pertussis bacteria recovered from infected patients were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and the DNA sequencing of the pertussis-toxin (promoter and subunit A), pertactin, and fimbriae (fim2 and fim3) genes. Results: From the total pertussis-suspected cases, 191 (22.7 %) infections were confirmed by real-time PCR and 18 through cultivation of B. pertussis (2.1 %), while one infection of B. parapertussis (0.11 %) was also detected by culture. Pertussis was significantly higher in patients that had had 0-3 vaccine doses (pentavalent vaccine alone) than in those who had had 4-5 vaccine doses (pentavalent plus DwPT boosters) at 94.3 vs. 5.7 %, respectively (p < 0.00001). The relative risk (RR) for patients with 4-5 doses compared to those with fewer than 4 doses or no dose was 0.23 (95 % Confidence Interval: 0.11-0.44), while the vaccine effectiveness was 77 % and coverage 50.5 %. Genetic analysis of B. pertussis isolates from different Peruvian regions detected two clonal groups as identified by PFGE. Those two groups corresponded to the B. pertussis genotypes emerging worldwide ptxP3-ptxA1-prn2 or 9-fim3-1 and ptxP3-ptxA1-prn2 or 9-fim3-2. Conclusions: Two emerging B. pertussis genotypes similar to isolates involved in worldwide epidemics were detected in PerĂș. Low vaccine coverage (<50 %) and genetic divergence between the vaccine-producing strain and the local isolates could contribute to this pertussal epidemic.Fil: Bailon, H. A short review of "DGP Specteroscopy"
In this paper we provide a short review of the main results developed in
hep-th/0604086. We focus on linearised vacuum perturbations about the
self-accelerating branch of solutions in the DGP model. These are shown to
contain a ghost in the spectrum for any value of the brane tension. We also
comment on hep-th/0607099, where some counter arguments have been presented.Comment: Minor typos correcte
Ghosts in asymmetric brane gravity and the decoupled stealth limit
We study the spectrum of gravitational perturbations around a vacuum de
Sitter brane in a 5D asymmetric braneworld model, with induced curvature on the
brane. This generalises the stealth acceleration model proposed by Charmousis,
Gregory and Padilla (CGP) which realises the Cardassian cosmology in which
power law cosmic acceleration can be driven by ordinary matter. Whenever the
bulk has infinite volume we find that there is always a perturbative ghost
propagating on the de Sitter brane, in contrast to the Minkowski brane case
analysed by CGP. We discuss the implication of this ghost for the stealth
acceleration model, and identify a limiting case where the ghost decouples as
the de Sitter curvature vanishes.Comment: 21 page
Genes de virulencia y bacteriocinas en cepas de Enterococcus faecalis aisladas desde diferentes muestras clĂnicas en la RegiĂłn del Maule, Chile
Padilla, C (reprint author), Univ Talca, Dept Microbiol, Talca, Chile.The presence of virulence genes (VG) and bacteriocins from different clinical samples was studied in Enterococcus faecalis isolated from urinary tract infections (UTI), bacteremia and endodontitis and was correlated with haemolysin and gelatinase activity. We evaluated the presence of VG by PCR in 150 strains of E. faecalis including cylA, aggA, efaA, eep, gelE, esp, as-48, bac31, entL50 A/B, entA, ent P, entB, enlA and ent1071. Haemolysin and gelatinase activity was studied. gelE and cylA genes expressed hemolysin and gelatinase, respectively. This activity was observed in some strains of bacteremia, UTI and endodontitis. The highest number of VG was detected in bacteremic strains, being aggA and entA genes the most frequent. efaA, esp, entA, entL50A/B were associated with their clinical origin (p <0.05). The most common genetic profile was aggA-eep-enlA-entL50A/B. E. faecalis from UTI, bacteremia and endodontitis presented different gene combinations. Some of the genes studied were related to their clinical origin. The results obtained in this study are similar to those reported in other countries
