On Automated Lemma Generation for Separation Logic with Inductive Definitions
Separation Logic with inductive definitions is a well-known approach for
deductive verification of programs that manipulate dynamic data structures.
Deciding verification conditions in this context is usually based on
user-provided lemmas relating the inductive definitions. We propose a novel
approach for generating these lemmas automatically which is based on simple
syntactic criteria and deterministic strategies for applying them. Our approach
focuses on iterative programs, although it can be applied to recursive programs
as well, and specifications that describe not only the shape of the data
structures, but also their content or their size. Empirically, we find that our
approach is powerful enough to deal with sophisticated benchmarks, e.g.,
iterative procedures for searching, inserting, or deleting elements in sorted
lists, binary search tress, red-black trees, and AVL trees, in a very efficient
way

Optimized Parameters for Over-Height Vehicle Detection under Variable Weather Conditions
Over-height vehicle drivers continuously ignore warning signs and strike onto bridges despite the number of preventative methods installed at low clearance bridges. In this paper, the authors present a new method for over-height vehicle strike prevention with a single calibrated camera mounted on the side of the roadway. The camera is installed at the height of the formed by the average of the maximum allowable heights across all lanes in a given traffic direction; the error caused by the road gradient is assumed to be negligible and absorbed through the calibration process. At that height, the over-height plane can be safely approximated as a line in the camera view. Any vehicle exceeding this line is consequently over-height. The camera position and orientation are determined through a calibration process proposed. Instances of over-height vehicles are detected through optical flow monitoring. Evaluation of the system resulted in a height accuracy of ±2.875 mm; outperforming the target accuracy of ±5 cm, OH detection accuracy of 68.9%, and classification performance of 83.3%. Electromagnetic form factor of pion from N_f=2+1 dynamical flavor QCD
We present a calculation of the electromagnetic form factor of the pion in
flavor lattice QCD. Calculations are made on the PACS-CS gauge field
configurations generated using Iwasaki gauge action and Wilson-clover quark
action on a lattice volume with the lattice spacing estimated as
fm at the physical point. Measurements of the form factor are
made using the technique of partially twisted boundary condition to reach small
momentum transfer as well as periodic boundary condition with integer momenta.
Additional improvements including random wall source techniques and a judicious
choice of momenta carried by the incoming and outgoing quarks are employed for
error reduction. Analyzing the form factor data for the pion mass at MeV and 296 MeV, we find that the NNLO SU(2) chiral perturbation
theory fit yields for the pion charge radius
at the physical pion mass. Albeit the error is quite large, this is consistent
with the experimental value of . Below MeV, we find that statistical fluctuations in the pion two- and
three-point functions become too large to extract statistically meaningful
averages on a spatial volume. We carry out a sample calculation on a
lattice with the quark masses close to the physical point, which
suggests that form factor calculations at the physical point become feasible by
enlarging lattice sizes to .Comment: 28 pages, 14 figure
Symbolic Partial-Order Execution for Testing Multi-Threaded Programs
We describe a technique for systematic testing of multi-threaded programs. We
combine Quasi-Optimal Partial-Order Reduction, a state-of-the-art technique
that tackles path explosion due to interleaving non-determinism, with symbolic
execution to handle data non-determinism. Our technique iteratively and
exhaustively finds all executions of the program. It represents program
executions using partial orders and finds the next execution using an
underlying unfolding semantics. We avoid the exploration of redundant program
traces using cutoff events. We implemented our technique as an extension of
KLEE and evaluated it on a set of large multi-threaded C programs. Our
experiments found several previously undiscovered bugs and undefined behaviors
in memcached and GNU sort, showing that the new method is capable of finding
bugs in industrial-size benchmarks.Comment: Extended version of a paper presented at CAV'2
Foot pain and foot health in an educated population of adults: results from the Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni Foot Health Survey
Abstract Background Foot pain is common amongst the general population and impacts negatively on physical function and quality of life. Associations between personal health characteristics, lifestyle/behaviour factors and foot pain have been studied; however, the role of wider determinants of health on foot pain have received relatively little attention. Objectives of this study are i) to describe foot pain and foot health characteristics in an educated population of adults; ii) to explore associations between moderate-to-severe foot pain and a variety of factors including gender, age, medical conditions/co-morbidity/multi-morbidity, key indicators of general health, foot pathologies, and social determinants of health; and iii) to evaluate associations between moderate-to-severe foot pain and foot function, foot health and health-related quality-of-life. Methods Between February and March 2018, Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni with a working email address were invited to participate in the cross-sectional electronic survey (anonymously) by email via the Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni Office. The survey was constructed using the REDCap secure web online survey application and sought information on presence/absence of moderate-to-severe foot pain, patient characteristics (age, body mass index, socioeconomic status, occupation class, comorbidities, and foot pathologies). Prevalence data were expressed as absolute frequencies and percentages. Multivariate logistic and linear regressions were undertaken to identify associations 1) between independent variables and moderate-to-severe foot pain, and 2) between moderate-to-severe foot pain and foot function, foot health and health-related quality of life. Results Of 50,228 invitations distributed, there were 7707 unique views and 593 valid completions (median age [inter-quartile range] 42 [31–52], 67.3% female) of the survey (7.7% response rate). The sample was comprised predominantly of white Scottish/British (89.4%) working age adults (95%), the majority of whom were overweight or obese (57.9%), and in either full-time or part-time employment (82.5%) as professionals (72.5%). Over two-thirds (68.5%) of the sample were classified in the highest 6 deciles (most affluent) of social deprivation. Moderate-to-severe foot pain affected 236/593 respondents (39.8%). High body mass index, presence of bunions, back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, hip pain and lower occupation class were included in the final multivariate model and all were significantly and independently associated with moderate-to-severe foot pain (p < 0.05), except for rheumatoid arthritis (p = 0.057). Moderate-to-severe foot pain was significantly and independently associated lower foot function, foot health and health-related quality of life scores following adjustment for age, gender and body mass index (p < 0.05). Conclusions Moderate-to-severe foot pain was highly prevalent in a university-educated population and was independently associated with female gender, high body mass index, bunions, back pain, hip pain and lower occupational class. Presence of moderate-to-severe foot pain was associated with worse scores for foot function, foot health and health-related quality-of-life. Education attainment does not appear to be protective against moderate-to-severe foot pain
The impact of induction chemotherapy on the outcome of second-line therapy with pemetrexed or docetaxel in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer
Background: Using data from a large phase III study of previously treated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that showed similar efficacy for pemetrexed and docetaxel, this retrospective analysis evaluates the impact of first-line chemotherapy on the outcome of second-line chemotherapy. Patients and methods: In all, 571 patients with advanced NSCLC were randomly assigned to receive pemetrexed 500 mg/m2 or docetaxel 75 mg/m2 on day 1 of a 21-day cycle. Comparisons were made based on type of first-line therapy [gemcitabine + platinum (GP), taxane + platinum (TP), or other therapies (OT)], response to initial therapy, time since initial therapy, and clinical characteristics. The two second-line treatment groups were pooled for this analysis due to similar efficacy and were assumed to have no interaction with the first-line therapies. Results: Baseline characteristics were generally balanced. By multivariate analysis, gender, stage at diagnosis, performance status (PS), and best response to first-line therapy significantly influenced overall survival (OS). Additional factors by univariate analysis, histology, and time elapsed from first- to second-line therapy significantly influenced OS. Conclusions: Future trials in the second-line setting should stratify patients by gender, stage at diagnosis, PS, and best response to first-line therap
