Young star clusters in M31
In our study of M31's globular cluster system with MMT/Hectospec, we have
obtained high-quality spectra of 85 clusters with ages less than 1 Gyr. With
the exception of Hubble V, the young cluster in NGC 205, we find that these
young clusters have kinematics and spatial distribution consistent with
membership in M31's young disk. Preliminary estimates of the cluster masses and
structural parameters, using spectroscopically derived ages and HST imaging,
confirms earlier suggestions that M31 has clusters similar to the LMC's young
populous clusters.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, contributed talk at "Galaxies in the Local Volume"

Synthesis effects on the magnetic and superconducting properties of RuSr2GdCu2O8
A systematic study on the synthesis of the Ru-1212 compound by preparing a
series of samples that were annealed at increasing temperatures and then
quenched has been performed. It results that the optimal temperature for the
annealing lies around 1060-1065 C; a further temperature increase worsens the
phase formation. Structural order is very important and the subsequent grinding
and annealing improves it. Even if from the structural point of view the
samples appear substantially similar, the physical characterization highlight
great differences both in the electrical and magnetic properties related to
intrinsic properties of the phase as well as to the connection between the
grains as inferred from the resistive and the Curie Weiss behaviour at high
temperature as well as in the visibility of ZFC anf FC magnetic signals.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. Proc. Int. Workshop " Ruthenate and

On the effect of heterovalent substitutions in ruthenocuprates
We discuss the properties of superconducting derivatives of the RuSr2GdCu2O8
(1212-type) ruthenocuprate, for which heterovalent doping has been achieved
through partial substitution of Cu ions into the RuO2 planes
(Ru1-xSr2GdCu2+xO8-d, 0<x<0.75, Tcmax=72 K for x=0.3-0.4) and Ce ions into the
Gd sites (RuSr2Gd1-yCeyCu2O8, 0<y<0.1). The measurements of XANES, thermopower,
and magnetization under external pressure reveal an underdoped character of all
compounds. Muon spin rotation experiments indicate the presence of magnetic
order at low temperatures (Tm=14-2 K for x=0.1-0.4). Properties of these two
series lead us to the qualitative phase diagram for differently doped 1212-type
ruthenocuprates. The difference in temperature of magnetic ordering found for
superconducting and non-superconducting RuSr2GdCu2O8 is discussed in the
context of the properties of substituted compounds. The high pressure oxygen
conditions required for synthesis of Ru1-xSr2RECu2+xO8-d, have been extended to
synthesis of a Ru1-xSr2Eu2-yCeyCu2+xO10-d series. The Cu->Ru doping achieved in
these phases is found to decrease the temperature for magnetic ordering as well
the volume fraction of the magnetic phase.Comment: Proceedings of the 3rd Polish-US Workshop on Magnetism and

The Superconductivity, Intragrain Penetration Depth and Meissner Effect of RuSr2(Gd,Ce)2Cu2O10+delta
The hole concentration (p)(delta), the transition temperature Tc, the
intragrain penetration depth lambda, and the Meissner effect were measured for
annealed RuSr2(Gd,Ce)2Cu2O10+delta samples. The intragrain superconducting
transition temperature Tc} varied from 17 to 40 K while the p changed by only
0.03 holes/CuO2. The intragrain superfluid-density 1/lambda^2 and the
diamagnetic drop of the field-cooled magnetization across Tc (the Meissner
effect), however, increased more than 10 times. All of these findings are in
disagreement with both the Tc vs. p and the Tc vs. 1/lambda^2 correlations
proposed for homogeneous cuprates, but are in line with a possible
phase-separation and the granularity associated with it.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B (May 2,

Superconducting properties of RuSr2GdCu2O8 studied by SQUID magnetometry
For polycrystalline RuSr2GdCu2O8 (Ru-1212), distinct peaks have been reported
in d.c. magnetization in the superconducting state of the sample. Sr2GdRuO6
(Sr-2116), the precursor for the preparation of Ru-1212, shows similar peaks in
the same temperature regime. Based on measurements performed on both bulk and
powdered samples of Ru-1212 and Sr-2116, we exclude the possibility, that the
observed behavior of the magnetization of Ru-1212 is due to Sr-2116 impurities.
The effect is related to the superconductivity of Ru-1212, but it is not an
intrinsic property of this compound. We provide evidence that the observation
of magnetization peaks in the superconducting state of Ru-1212 is due to flux
motion generated by the movement of the sample in an inhomogeneous field,
during the measurement in the SQUID magnetometer. We propose several tests,
that help to decide, whether the features observed in a SQUID magnetization
measurement of Ru-1212 represent a property of the compound or not.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure
Reduction and Emergence in Bose-Einstein Condensates
A closer look at some proposed Gedanken-experiments on BECs promises to shed
light on several aspects of reduction and emergence in physics. These include
the relations between classical descriptions and different quantum treatments
of macroscopic systems, and the emergence of new properties and even new
objects as a result of spontaneous symmetry breaking
Finding a moral homeground: appropriately critical religious education and transmission of spiritual values
Values-inspired issues remain an important part of the British school curriculum. Avoiding moral relativism while fostering enthusiasm for spiritual values and applying them to non-curricular learning such as school ethos or children's home lives are challenges where spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development might benefit from leadership by critical religious education (RE). Whether the school's model of spirituality is that of an individual spiritual tradition (schools of a particular religious character) or universal pluralistic religiosity (schools of plural religious character), the pedagogy of RE thought capable of leading SMSC development would be the dialogical approach with examples of successful implementation described by Gates, Ipgrave and Skeie. Marton's phenomenography, is thought to provide a valuable framework to allow the teacher to be appropriately critical in the transmission of spiritual values in schools of a particular religious character as evidenced by Hella's work in Lutheran schools
Lectures on the functional renormalization group method
These introductory notes are about functional renormalization group equations
and some of their applications. It is emphasised that the applicability of this
method extends well beyond critical systems, it actually provides us a general
purpose algorithm to solve strongly coupled quantum field theories. The
renormalization group equation of F. Wegner and A. Houghton is shown to resum
the loop-expansion. Another version, due to J. Polchinski, is obtained by the
method of collective coordinates and can be used for the resummation of the
perturbation series. The genuinely non-perturbative evolution equation is
obtained in a manner reminiscent of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. Two variants
of this scheme are presented where the scale which determines the order of the
successive elimination of the modes is extracted from external and internal
spaces. The renormalization of composite operators is discussed briefly as an
alternative way to arrive at the renormalization group equation. The scaling
laws and fixed points are considered from local and global points of view.
Instability induced renormalization and new scaling laws are shown to occur in
the symmetry broken phase of the scalar theory. The flattening of the effective
potential of a compact variable is demonstrated in case of the sine-Gordon
model. Finally, a manifestly gauge invariant evolution equation is given for
QED.Comment: 47 pages, 11 figures, final versio
Spatial Solitons and Anderson Localization
Stochastic (Anderson) localization is the spatial localization of the
wave-function of quantum particles in random media. We show, that a
corresponding phenomenon can stabilize spatial solitons in optical resonators:
spatial solitons in resonators with randomly distorted mirrors are more stable
than in perfect mirror resonators. We demonstrate the phenomenon numerically,
by investigating solitons in lasers with saturable absorber, and analytically
by deriving and analyzing coupled equations of spatially coherent and
incoherent field components.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.
A 24 HR global campaign to assess precision timing of the millisecond pulsar J1713+0747
The radiomillisecond pulsar J1713+0747 is regarded as one of the highest-precision clocks in the sky and is regularly timed for the purpose of detecting gravitational waves. The International Pulsar Timing Array Collaboration undertook a 24 hr global observation of PSR J1713+0747 in an effort to better quantify sources of timing noise in this pulsar, particularly on intermediate (1.24 hr) timescales. We observed the pulsar continuously over 24 hr with the Arecibo, Effelsberg, GMRT, Green Bank, LOFAR, Lovell, Nancay, Parkes, and WSRT radio telescopes. The combined pulse times-of-arrival presented here provide an estimate of what sources of timing noise, excluding DM variations, would be present as compared to an idealized N√ improvement in timing precision, where N is the number of pulses analyzed. In the case of this particular pulsar, we find that intrinsic pulse phase jitter dominates arrival time precision when the signal-to-noise ratio of single pulses exceeds unity, as measured using the eight telescopes that observed at L band/1.4 GHz.We present first results of specific phenomena probed on the unusually long timescale (for a single continuous observing session) of tens of hours, in particular interstellar scintillation, and discuss the degree to which scintillation and profile evolution affect precision timing. This paper presents the data set as a basis for future, deeper studies
