Resonantly damped surface and body MHD waves in a solar coronal slab with oblique propagation
The theory of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in solar coronal slabs in a
zero- configuration and for parallel propagation of waves does not allow
the existence of surface waves. When oblique propagation of perturbations is
considered both surface and body waves are able to propagate. When the
perpendicular wave number is larger than a certain value, the body kink mode
becomes a surface wave. In addition, a sausage surface mode is found below the
internal cut-off frequency. When non-uniformity in the equilibrium is included,
surface and body modes are damped due to resonant absorption. In this paper,
first, a normal-mode analysis is performed and the period, the damping rate,
and the spatial structure of eigenfunctions are obtained. Then, the
time-dependent problem is solved, and the conditions under which one or the
other type of mode is excited are investigated.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Solar Physic
Oscillatory Modes of a Prominence-PCTR-Corona Slab Model
Oscillations of magnetic structures in the solar corona have often been
interpreted in terms of magnetohydrodynamic waves. We study the adiabatic
magnetoacoustic modes of a prominence plasma slab with a uniform longitudinal
magnetic field, surrounded by a prominence-corona transition region (PCTR) and
a coronal medium. Considering linear small-amplitude oscillations, the
dispersion relation for the magnetoacoustic slow and fast modes is deduced
assuming evanescent-like perturbations in the coronal medium. In the system
without PCTR, a classification of the oscillatory modes according to the
polarisation of their eigenfunctions is made in order to distinguish modes with
fast-like or slow-like properties. Internal and external slow modes are
governed by the prominence and coronal properties respectively, and fast modes
are mostly dominated by prominence conditions for the observed wavelengths. In
addition, the inclusion of an isothermal PCTR does not substantially influence
the mode frequencies, but new solutions (PCTR slow modes) are present.Comment: Accepted for publication in Solar Physic
Magneto-Acoustic Wave Oscillations in Solar Spicules
Some observations suggest that solar spicules show small amplitude and high
frequency oscillations of magneto-acoustic waves, which arise from photospheric
granular forcing. We apply the method of MHD seismology to determine the period
of kink waves. For this purposes, the oscillations of a magnetic cylinder
embedded in a field-free environment is investigated. Finally, diagnostic
diagrams displaying the oscillatory period in terms of some equilibrium
parameters are provided to allow a comparison between theoretical results and
those coming from observations.Comment: 10 pages, 4 fig
Changes in perfusion, and structure of hippocampal subfields related to cognitive impairment after ECT:A pilot study using ultra high field MRI
Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with major depression is associated with volume changes and markers of neuroplasticity in the hippocampus, in particular in the dentate gyrus. It is unclear if these changes are associated with cognitive side effects. Objectives: We investigated whether changes in cognitive functioning after ECT were associated with hippocampal structural changes. It was hypothesized that 1) volume increase of hippocampal subfields and 2) changes in perfusion and diffusion of the hippocampus correlated with cognitive decline. Methods: Using ultra high field (7 T) MRI, intravoxel incoherent motion and volumetric data were acquired and neurocognitive functioning was assessed before and after ECT in 23 patients with major depression. Repeated measures correlation analysis was used to examine the relation between cognitive functioning and structural characteristics of the hippocampus. Results: Left hippocampal volume, left and right dentate gyrus and right CA1 volume increase correlated with decreases in verbal memory functioning. In addition, a decrease of mean diffusivity in the left hippocampus correlated with a decrease in letter fluency. Limitations: Due to methodological restrictions direct study of neuroplasticity is not possible. MRI is used as an indirect measure. Conclusion: As both volume increase in the hippocampus and MD decrease can be interpreted as indirect markers for neuroplasticity that co-occur with a decrease in cognitive functioning, our results may indicate that neuroplastic processes are affecting cognitive processes after ECT.</p
Streamer Wave Events Observed in Solar Cycle 23
In this paper we conduct a data survey searching for well-defined streamer
wave events observed by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO)
on-board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) throughout Solar Cycle
23. As a result, 8 candidate events are found and presented here. We compare
different events and find that in most of them the driving CMEs ejecta are
characterized by a high speed and a wide angular span, and the CME-streamer
interactions occur generally along the flank of the streamer structure at an
altitude no higher than the bottom of the field of view of LASCO C2. In
addition, all front-side CMEs have accompanying flares. These common
observational features shed light on the excitation conditions of streamer wave
events.
We also conduct a further analysis on one specific streamer wave event on 5
June 2003. The heliocentric distances of 4 wave troughs/crests at various
exposure times are determined; they are then used to deduce the wave properties
like period, wavelength, and phase speeds. It is found that both the period and
wavelength increase gradually with the wave propagation along the streamer
plasma sheet, and the phase speed of the preceding wave is generally faster
than that of the trailing ones. The associated coronal seismological study
yields the radial profiles of the Alfv\'en speed and magnetic field strength in
the region surrounding the streamer plasma sheet. Both quantities show a
general declining trend with time. This is interpreted as an observational
manifestation of the recovering process of the CME-disturbed corona. It is also
found that the Alfv\'enic critical point is at about 10 R where the
flow speed, which equals the Alfv\'en speed, is 200 km s

Excitation of standing kink oscillations in coronal loops
In this work we review the efforts that have been done to study the
excitation of the standing fast kink body mode in coronal loops. We mainly
focus on the time-dependent problem, which is appropriate to describe flare or
CME induced kink oscillations. The analytical and numerical studies in slab and
cylindrical loop geometries are reviewed. We discuss the results from very
simple one-dimensional models to more realistic (but still simple) loop
configurations. We emphasise how the results of the initial value problem
complement the eigenmode calculations. The possible damping mechanisms of the
kink oscillations are also discussed
