Mineralogical Alterations During Laboratory-scale Carbon Sequestration Experiments for the Illinois Basin
AbstractDuring geological sequestration of carbon dioxide, the injected CO2 will react with formation fluids and rocks in the injection zone and overlying cap rocks. The resulting acidification of the fluids may result in the dissolution of solid phases and the formation of new solid phases which can cause changes in rock composition and overall fabric. We are conducting laboratory-scale geochemical and mineralogical studies on reservoir and cap rock samples in the Illinois Basin that complement the on-going Illinois Basin - Decatur Project (IBDP), a large-scale one million tonne demonstration of geologic sequestration in the Mt Simon Sandstone, Illinois USA. Mt. Simon Sandstone, Eau Clare Shale, and Knox Supergroup samples from the IBDP injection and deep monitoring wells and locations with rocks analogous to those at the IBDP site have been selected for simulated reactions using synthetic brine and CO2 in modified Parr pressure reactors at pressure and temperature conditions that correspond to ambient reservoir conditions (9.87 to 20.7MPa and 38 to 50°C) and for varying amounts of time (1 to 9 months). Using petrographic techniques and XRD analysis, samples have been analyzed before and after reactor experiments to define the mineralogical and textural baseline and report observed changes. Brine composition has also been analyzed for geochemical changes. The React® and Differential Evolution geochemical modeling programs are being used to simulate changes in mineral mass and brine chemistry. Post-reaction analyses of rock and brine samples from the Mt. Simon Sandstone show evidence of dissolution of diagenetic clays, increased porosity, and possible illitization of clay minerals. Three, six, and nine month post-reaction Eau Claire Shale rock and brine sample analyses indicate some degree of brine-rock-CO2 reaction by showing weathered illite, mixed clay, feldspar, biotite, and pyrite crystals. Post-reaction Potosi Dolomite rock and brine samples show evidence of dissolution of dolomite. Overall, petrographic and geochemical observations from these experiments suggest that the Mt. Simon Sandstone reservoir and Eau Claire cap rock system serve as good CO2 sequestration site. The competency of the Knox Supergroup as a CO2 sequestration target is still under investigation
Linkage analysis in a large kindred with autosomal dominant transmission of polyglandular autoimmune disease type II (Schmidt syndrome)
Schmidt syndrome (PGA syndrome type II) is a rare condition characterized by polyglandular failure. It is an autosomal dominant trait with variable expressivity that was inherited over four generations in an Indiana kindred. Association of HLA-B8 has been reported with Schmidt syndrome. Our proband is a 12-year-old boy with Addison disease, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), and vitiligo. Two of his eight sibs had either IDDM (sister) or vitiligo and hyperthyroidism (brother). His mother had hypothyroidism. Seven members of earlier generations apparently were also affected. We obtained peripheral blood for HLA and genetic analysis from 21 relatives in a family with 8 Schmidt syndrome individuals in three generations. HLA studies on 15 affected and unaffected relatives showed only 2 of 7 persons with B8-containing haplotypes. Therefore, no association exists between the B8-containing haplotype and the syndrome.
We identified informative marker loci. No evidence for linkage of the Schmidt locus to any of the 14 markers was found and close linkage to esterase D and adenylate kinase and possibly properdin factor B was excluded
Embodied learning: Responding to AIDS in Lesotho's education sector

Copyright @ 2009 Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14733280802630981.In contrast to pre-colonial practices, education in Lesotho's formal school system has historically assumed a Cartesian separation of mind and body, the disciplining of students' bodies serving principally to facilitate cognitive learning. Lesotho has among the highest HIV-prevalence rates worldwide, and AIDS has both direct and indirect impacts on the bodies of many children. Thus, students' bodies can no longer be taken for granted but present a challenge for education. Schools are increasingly seen as a key point of intervention to reduce young people's risk of contracting the disease and also to assist them to cope with its consequences: there is growing recognition that such goals require more than cognitive learning. The approaches adopted, however, range from those that posit a linear and causal relationship between knowledge, attitudes and practices (so-called ‘KAP’ approaches, in which the role of schools is principally to inculcate the pre-requisite knowledge) to ‘life skills programmes’ that advocate a more embodied learning practice in schools. Based on interviews with policy-makers and practitioners and a variety of documentary sources, this paper examines a series of school-based AIDS interventions, arguing that they represent a less radical departure from ‘education for the mind’ than might appear to be the case. The paper concludes that most interventions serve to cast on children responsibility for averting a social risk, and to ‘normalise’ aberrant children's bodies to ensure they conform to what the cognitively-oriented education system expects
X-ray structure of a putative reaction intermediate of 5-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase
The X-ray structure of yeast 5-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase, in which the catalytic site of the enzyme is complexed with a putative cyclic intermediate composed of both substrate moieties, has been solved at 0.16 nm (1.6 Å) resolution. The cyclic intermediate is bound covalently to Lys(263) with the amino group of the aminomethyl side chain ligated to the active-site zinc ion in a position normally occupied by a catalytic hydroxide ion. The cyclic intermediate is catalytically competent, as shown by its turnover in the presence of added substrate to form porphobilinogen. The findings, combined with those of previous studies, are consistent with a catalytic mechanism in which the C–C bond linking both substrates in the intermediate is formed before the C–N bond
Ab-initio calculation of Kerr spectra for semi-infinite systems including multiple reflections and optical interferences
Based on Luttinger's formulation the complex optical conductivity tensor is
calculated within the framework of the spin-polarized relativistic screened
Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method for layered systems by means of a contour
integration technique. For polar geometry and normal incidence ab-initio Kerr
spectra of multilayer systems are then obtained by including via a 2x2 matrix
technique all multiple reflections between layers and optical interferences in
the layers. Applications to Co|Pt5 and Pt3|Co|Pt5 on the top of a semi-infinite
fcc-Pt(111) bulk substrate show good qualitative agreement with the
experimental spectra, but differ from those obtained by applying the commonly

Critical Analysis of Baryon Masses and Sigma-Terms in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory
We present an analysis of the octet baryon masses and the and
--terms in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. At
next-to-leading order, , knowledge of the baryon masses and
allows to determine the three corresponding finite
low--energy constants and to predict the the two --terms
. We also include the spin-3/2 decuplet in the
effective theory. The presence of the non--vanishing energy scale due to the
octet--decuplet splitting shifts the average octet baryon mass by an infinite
amount and leads to infinite renormalizations of the low--energy constants. The
first observable effect of the decuplet intermediate states to the baryon
masses starts out at order . We argue that it is not sufficient to retain
only these but no other higher order terms to achieve a consistent description
of the three--flavor scalar sector of baryon CHPT. In addition, we critically

The relationship between anogenital distance and fertility, and genome-wide associations for anogenital distance in Irish Holstein-Friesian cows
peer-reviewedThe evaluation of anogenital distance (AGD), the distance from the center of the anus to base of the clitoris, as a potential fertility trait for genetic selection in dairy cows has generated recent interest. The objectives of this cross-sectional observational study were to (1) characterize the distribution and variability of AGD, (2) determine factors associated with AGD, (3) estimate heritability for AGD, (4) identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) associated with phenotypic variation of AGD, and (5) validate the relationship between categories of AGD and fertility in Irish Holstein-Friesian cows. Anogenital distance was measured using digital calipers in 1,180 Holstein cows (mean ± standard deviation: 225 ± 79 d in milk) from 10 dairy herds located in Munster, Ireland. In addition, age (yr), weight (kg), height at hip (cm), and body condition score (BCS) at the time of AGD measurement were determined in a subset of 281 cows. Genotype information available from 908 cows was subsequently imputed to the Illumina Bovine High Density BeadChip (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA) for genome-wide association analysis of phenotypic variation in AGD. Overall, AGD had a normal distribution and high variability (mean ± standard deviation; 119.2 ± 11.6 mm). Anogenital distance was weakly but positively associated with cow age, hip height, and body weight, and negatively associated with BCS; the phenotypic variation in AGD that was explainable by these variables was small (coefficient of determination; R2 = 0.09, 0.06, 0.10, and 0.02, respectively). The estimated heritability for AGD was 0.37 (standard error of mean ± 0.08). Six SNP of suggestive significance were identified on Bos taurus autosomes 6, 15, 20, and 26; however, none of these SNP was related to previously identified candidate genes for fertility. Cows were categorized into quartiles (Q1; 86 to 111 mm; n = 311, Q2; 112 to 120 mm; n = 330; Q3; 121 to 127 mm; n = 265, and Q4; 128 to 160 mm; n = 274) based on AGD and the association with reproductive outcomes examined (21-d submission rate, pregnancy to first AI, pregnancy rate within 21, 42 and 84-d after the farm mating start date, and number of times bred). None of the reproductive variables differed significantly between AGD categories. In summary, despite identification of high variability and moderate heritability for AGD in Irish Holstein-Friesian cows, reproductive outcomes did not differ between categories of AGD. This latter result differs from our previous finding of an inverse relationship between AGD and pregnancy outcomes in first- and second-parity Canadian Holstein cows, emphasizing the need to test and validate this new phenotype in diverse cow populations
Accurate evaluation of the interstitial KKR-Green function
It is shown that the Brillouin zone integral for the interstitial KKR-Green
function can be evaluated accurately by taking proper care of the free-electron
singularities in the integrand. The proposed method combines two recently
developed methods, a supermatrix method and a subtraction method. This
combination appears to provide a major improvement compared with an earlier
proposal based on the subtraction method only. By this the barrier preventing
the study of important interstitial-like defects, such as an electromigrating
atom halfway along its jump path, can be considered as being razed.Comment: 23 pages, RevTe
Scintillation Counters for the D0 Muon Upgrade
We present the results of an upgrade to the D0 muon system. Scintillating
counters have been added to the existing central D0 muon system to provide
rejection for cosmic ray muons and out-of-time background, and to provide
additional fast timing information for muons in an upgraded Tevatron.

The gauge-string duality and heavy ion collisions
I review at a non-technical level the use of the gauge-string duality to
study aspects of heavy ion collisions, with special emphasis on the trailing
string calculation of heavy quark energy loss. I include some brief
speculations on how variants of the trailing string construction could provide
a toy model of black hole formation and evaporation. This essay is an invited
contribution to "Forty Years of String Theory" and is aimed at philosophers and
