Universal Susceptibility Variations in 1+1 Dimensional Vortex Glass
We model a planar array of fluxlines as a discrete solid-on-solid model with
quenched disorder. Simulations at finite temperatures are made possible by a
new algorithm which circumvents the slow glassy dynamics encountered by
traditional Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithms. Numerical results on magnetic

An insight into the Chinese traditional seafood market: Species characterization of cephalopod products by DNA barcoding and phylogenetic analysis using COI and 16SrRNA genes
Squids, cuttlefish and octopus are used for the preparation of traditional products sold on the Chinese market without a specific denomination. In this study DNA barcoding and phylogenetic distance analysis of COI and 16S rRNA genes' fragments were used to characterize the most commonly processed species in dried whole, grilled shredded and salted cephalopod preparations. Ninety-five products (23 sold as cuttlefish, 4 as octopus and 68 as squid) purchased in Chinese local markets were analyzed. Overall, the study identified 10 different species: Sepia pharaonis, S. esculenta, S. recurvirostra, S. lycidas in cuttlefish; Amphioctopus marginatus in octopus; Uroteuthis chinensis, U. edulis, Ommastrephes bartramii, Illex argentinus and Dosidicus gigas in squids. This latter species, characterized by a low commercial value, was found in the majority of the samples (50.5%) and in all the shredded products. By comparing the molecular results with the declared macrocategory (cuttlefish, octopus and squid), two cases of misdescription were pointed out, involving shredded cuttlefish and octopus which were identified as D. gigas. Our results are of particular interest in the light of the scarcity of data regarding the identification of cephalopods on international markets and considering that China is one of the leading cephalopod-producing countries
Critical depinning force and vortex lattice order in disordered superconductors
We simulate the ordering of vortices and its effects on the critical current
in superconductors with varied vortex-vortex interaction strength and varied
pinning strengths for a two-dimensional system. For strong pinning the vortex
lattice is always disordered and the critical depinning force only weakly
increases with decreasing vortex-vortex interactions. For weak pinning the
vortex lattice is defect free until the vortex-vortex interactions have been
reduced to a low value, when defects begin to appear with a simultaneous rapid
increase in the critical depinning force. In each case the depinning force
shows a maximum for non-interacting vortices. The relative height of the peak
increases and the peak width decreases for decreasing pinning strength in
excellent agreement with experimental trends associated with the peak effect.
We show that scaling relations exist between the distance between defects in
the vortex lattice and the critical depinning force.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Electron transport across a quantum wire in the presence of electron leakage to a substrate
We investigate electron transport through a mono-atomic wire which is tunnel
coupled to two electrodes and also to the underlying substrate. The setup is
modeled by a tight-binding Hamiltonian and can be realized with a scanning
tunnel microscope (STM). The transmission of the wire is obtained from the
corresponding Green's function. If the wire is scanned by the contacting STM
tip, the conductance as a function of the tip position exhibits oscillations
which may change significantly upon increasing the number of wire atoms. Our
numerical studies reveal that the conductance depends strongly on whether or
not the substrate electrons are localized. As a further ubiquitous feature, we
observe the formation of charge oscillations.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Reducing the Population Burden of Coronary Heart Disease by Modifying Adiposity: Estimates From the ARIC Study
Background: Excess adiposity, which affects 69% of US adults, increases coronary heart disease (CHD) risk in an association that manifests below conventional obesity cut points. The population-level impact on CHD risk that is attainable through modest adiposity reductions in populations is not well characterized. We estimated the effect of hypothetical reductions in both body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) on CHD incidence. Methods and Results: The study population included 13 610 ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) participants. Our hypothetical reduction in BMI or WC was applied relative to the temporal trend, with no hypothetical reduction among those with BMI >24 or WC >88 cm, respectively. This threshold for hypothetical reduction is near the clinical guidelines for excess adiposity. CHD risk differences compared the hypothetical reduction with no reduction. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to estimate the effect of applying the hypothetical BMI reduction at the established overweight cut point of 25. Cumulative 12-year CHD incidence with no intervention was 6.3% (95% CI, 5.9â6.8%). Risk differences following the hypothetical BMI and WC reductions were â0.6% (95% CI, â1.0% to â0.1%) and â1.0% (95% CI, â1.4% to â0.5%), respectively. These results were robust for the sensitivity analyses. Consequently, we estimated that this hypothetical reduction of 5% in BMI and WC, respectively, could have prevented 9% and 16%, respectively, of the CHD events occurring in this study population over 12 years, after adjustment for established CHD risk factors. Conclusions: Meaningful CHD risk reductions could derive from modest reductions in adiposity attainable through lifestyle modification

We report on a search for the decays J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e + c.c., J/Psi -->
D- e+ nu_e + c.c., and J/Psi --> D0bar e+ e- + c.c. in a sample of 5.8 * 10^7
J/Psi events collected with the BESII detector at the BEPC. No excess of signal
above background is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the
branching fractions are set: B(J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e + c.c.)<4.8*10^-5, B(J/Psi

Measurements of J/psi Decays into 2(pi+pi-)eta and 3(pi+pi-)eta
Based on a sample of 5.8X 10^7 J/psi events taken with the BESII detector,
the branching fractions of J/psi--> 2(pi+pi-)eta and J/psi-->3(pi+pi-)eta are
measured for the first time to be (2.26+-0.08+-0.27)X10^{-3} and

BESII Detector Simulation
A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector
simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization
procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.
