The thermal decomposition of potassium and sodium-pyrosulfate

    Get PDF
Proceeding from KHSO4, K2S2O8, NaHSO4 and Na2S2O8, potassium- and sodium-pyrosulfates were prepared and their thermal decomposition was investigated by a T.G.A. method. This was done in order to clarify contradictory values found in the literature. The presence of an intermediate with composition K2SO5 was detected

Thermochemical stability and nonstoichiometry of erbia-stabilized bismuth oxide

    Get PDF
A phase study has been performed of high oxygen ion conducting erbia-stabilized bismutch oxide (1-x)Bi2O3·xEr2O3 (BE100X) using thermal analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. Investigation of the effect of a long-time (500 h) anneal of samples at 650°C in air revealed that the minimum amount of erbia needed to stabilize the high-temperature cubic ¿-Bi2O3 phase is 27.5 at%. This boundary value is much larger than the one usually reported in literature where the sluggishenss of the transformation from cubic to hexagonal at high Bi contents is not taken into account. Changes in nonstoichiometry of solid solutions Bi2-2xEr2xO3+¿ between 550°C and 850°C upon varying the ambient oxygen partial pressure are minimal for samples with 27.5 at% erbia, increasing with increasing erbia content. The parameter ¿ in pure oxygen increases from 0. 0044 for BE27.5 to 0.022 for BE50 taking the composition in nitrogen (PO2 ¿ 10¿4 atm) as stoichiometric reference (¿ = 0)

MAX: a mechatronic model building environment

    Get PDF
Abstract: A description is given of the state of the art and the functionality of MAX, an expert system for supporting conceptual design of mechatronic systems. Three model building principles are combined in MAX: – embedding equations in networks: a tight coupling between the graphical model formulation and the underlying equations assists the user in model building and evaluation. – multiple model formulations: one system can be manipulated and inspected simultaneously in multiple formulations (languages). – polymorphic modelling: a submodel definition is divided into a type that defines essential properties, and a specification that defines incidental properties. One type generally has multiple specifications, and types are organised hierarchically inside the library. By means of a simple case study, the utility of these principles is demonstrated. It is shown that MAX is a powerful model building environment that is well adapted to usage by designers.

Treatment of imported severe malaria with artesunate instead of quinine--more evidence needed?

    Get PDF
Rapid and fast acting anti-malarials are essential to treat severe malaria. Quinine has been the only option for parenteral therapy until recently. While current evidence shows that intravenous artesunate is more effective than quinine in treating severe malaria in endemic countries, some questions remain regarding safety profiles and drug resistance. For imported severe malaria, additional unanswered questions are related to generalizability of the findings from endemic countries and to legal aspects, as there is no Good Manufacturing Practice-conform drug available yet. Here, the implications of existing evidence for the treatment of imported severe malaria are discussed
