Two hundred and fifty-four patients were seen in the Genetic Clinics during 1973, the first full year of activity of the Department of Human Genetics, University of Cape Town. Cytogenetics in medical practice
A cytogenetics and tissue culture laboratory is an essential component of a medical genetics department. Chromosome analysis provides a definite answer in many cases whereclinical diagnosis is in doubt, and supplies information on which counselling may be based. Cultured cells from different body tissues may be the only means by which an inborn error of metabolism may be studied. Information supplied by such a laboratory forms the basis of many of the diagnostic and counselling services offered by the modern human geneticist to his fellow practitioners, either directly or as part of a medical genetics department.S. NorKing Russet, A New Potato Variety
This article gives background into the breeding history that lead to the potato variety named Nor King Russet. It resulted from a cross between Nooksack and ND9567-2Russ. Nooksack is a russet variety grown for processing (french fry) in the northwestern states and ND9567-2Russ resulted from a cross between two number selections that have Norchip and B5141-6 in their pedigrees
Exact results for the reactivity of a single-file system
We derive analytical expressions for the reactivity of a Single-File System
with fast diffusion and adsorption and desorption at one end. If the conversion
reaction is fast, then the reactivity depends only very weakly on the system
size, and the conversion is about 100%. If the reaction is slow, then the
reactivity becomes proportional to the system size, the loading, and the
reaction rate constant. If the system size increases the reactivity goes to the
geometric mean of the reaction rate constant and the rate of adsorption and
desorption. For large systems the number of nonconverted particles decreases
exponentially with distance from the adsorption/desorption end.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Interactions, Distribution of Pinning Energies, and Transport in the Bose Glass Phase of Vortices in Superconductors
We study the ground state and low energy excitations of vortices pinned to
columnar defects in superconductors, taking into account the long--range
interaction between the fluxons. We consider the ``underfilled'' situation in
the Bose glass phase, where each flux line is attached to one of the defects,
while some pins remain unoccupied. By exploiting an analogy with disordered
semiconductors, we calculate the spatial configurations in the ground state, as
well as the distribution of pinning energies, using a zero--temperature Monte
Carlo algorithm minimizing the total energy with respect to all possible
one--vortex transfers. Intervortex repulsion leads to strong correlations
whenever the London penetration depth exceeds the fluxon spacing. A pronounced
peak appears in the static structure factor for low filling fractions . Interactions lead to a broad Coulomb gap in the distribution of
pinning energies near the chemical potential , separating
the occupied and empty pins. The vanishing of at leads to a
considerable reduction of variable--range hopping vortex transport by

Gluino Pair Production at Linear e^+e^- Colliders
We study the potential of high-energy linear colliders for the
production of gluino pairs within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
(MSSM). In this model, the process is mediated by
quark/squark loops, dominantly of the third generation, where the mixing of
left- and right-handed states can become large. Taking into account realistic
beam polarization effects, photon and -boson exchange, and current mass
exclusion limits, we scan the MSSM parameter space for various
center-of-mass energies to determine the regions, where gluino production

Supersymmetric effects in top quark decay into polarized W-boson
We investigate the one-loop supersymmetric QCD (SUSY-QCD) and electroweak
(SUSY-EW) corrections to the top quark decay into a b-quark and a longitudinal
or transverse W-boson. The corrections are presented in terms of the
longitudinal ratio \Gamma(t-->W_L b)/\Gamma(t--> W b) and the transverse ratio
\Gamma(t-->W_- b)/\Gamma(t--> W b). In most of the parameter space, both
SUSY-QCD and SUSY-EW corrections to these ratios are found to be less than 1%
in magnitude and they tend to have opposite signs. The corrections to the total
width \Gamma(t-->W b) are also presented for comparison with the existing
results in the literature. We find that our SUSY-EW corrections to the total
width differ significantly from previous studies: the previous studies give a
large correction of more than 10% in magnitude for a large part of the
parameter space while our results reach only few percent at most.Comment: Version in PRD (explanation and refs added
Universality of Frequency and Field Scaling of the Conductivity Measured by Ac-Susceptibility of a Ybco-Film
Utilizing a novel and exact inversion scheme, we determine the complex linear
conductivity from the linear magnetic ac-susceptibility
which has been measured from 3\,mHz to 50\,MHz in fields between 0.4\,T and
4\,T applied parallel to the c-axis of a 250\,nm thin disk. The frequency
derivative of the phase and the dynamical scaling of
above and below provide clear evidence for a
continuous phase transition at to a generic superconducting state. Based
on the vortex-glass scaling model, the resulting critical exponents and
are close to those frequently obtained on films by other means and
associated with an 'isotropic' vortex glass. The field effect on
can be related to the increase of the glass coherence length,

Steady-State Properties of Single-File Systems with Conversion
We have used Monte-Carlo methods and analytical techniques to investigate the
influence of the characteristic parameters, such as pipe length, diffusion,
adsorption, desorption and reaction rate constants on the steady-state
properties of Single-File Systems with a reaction. We looked at cases when all
the sites are reactive and when only some of them are reactive. Comparisons
between Mean-Field predictions and Monte-Carlo simulations for the occupancy
profiles and reactivity are made. Substantial differences between Mean-Field
and the simulations are found when rates of diffusion are high. Mean-Field
results only include Single-File behavior by changing the diffusion rate
constant, but it effectively allows passing of particles. Reactivity converges
to a limit value if more reactive sites are added: sites in the middle of the
system have little or no effect on the kinetics. Occupancy profiles show
approximately exponential behavior from the ends to the middle of the system.Comment: 15 pages, 20 figure
