Magnetic Phase Diagram of GdNi2B2C: Two-ion Magnetoelasticity and Anisotropic Exchange Couplings
Extensive magnetization and magnetostriction measurements were carried out on
a single crystal of GdNi2B2C along the main tetragonal axes. Within the
paramagnetic phase, the magnetic and strain susceptibilities revealed a weak
anisotropy in the exchange couplings and two-ion tetragonal-preserving
alpha-strain modes. Within the ordered phase, magnetization and
magnetostriction revealed a relatively strong orthorhombic distortion mode and
rich field-temperature phase diagrams. For H//(100) phase diagram, three
field-induced transformations were observed, namely, at: Hd(T), related to the
domain alignment; Hr(T), associated with reorientation of the moment towards
the c-axis; and Hs(T), defining the saturation process wherein the exchange
field is completely counterbalanced. On the other hand, For H//(001) phase
diagram, only two field-induced transformations were observed, namely at: Hr(T)
and Hs(T). For both phase diagrams, Hs(T) follows the relation
Hs[1-(T/Tn)^2]^(1/2)kOe with Hs(T-->0)=128.5(5) kOe and Tn(H=0)=19.5 K. In
contrast, the thermal evolution of Hr(T) along the c-axis (much simpler than
along the a-axis) follows the relation Hr[1-T/Tr]^(1/3) kOe where
Hr(T-->0)=33.5(5) kOe and Tr(H=0)=13.5 K. It is emphasized that the
magnetoelastic interaction and the anisotropic exchange coupling are important
perturbations and therefore should be explicitly considered if a complete
analysis of the magnetic properties of the borocarbides is desired
Lockin to Weak Ferromagnetism in TbNi2B2C and ErNi2B2C
This article describes a model in which ferromagnetism necessarily
accompanies a spin-density-wave lockin transition in the borocarbide structure
provided the commensurate phase wave vector satisfies Q = (m/n)a* with m even
and n odd. The results account for the magnetic properties of TbNi2B2C, and are
also possibly relevant also for those of ErNi2B2C.Comment: 4 page
Vortex nucleation in Bose-Einstein condensates in time-dependent traps
Vortex nucleation in a Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a stirring
potential is studied numerically using the zero-temperature, two-dimensional
Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is found that this theory is able to describe the
creation of vortices, but not the crystallization of a vortex lattice. In the
case of a rotating, slightly anisotropic harmonic potential, the numerical
results reproduce experimental findings, thereby showing that finite
temperatures are not necessary for vortex excitation below the quadrupole
frequency. In the case of a condensate subject to stirring by a narrow rotating
potential, the process of vortex excitation is described by a classical model
that treats the multitude of vortices created by the stirrer as a continuously
distributed vorticity at the center of the cloud, but retains a potential flow
pattern at large distances from the center.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. Changes after referee report: one new figure,

Nonlinear dynamics for vortex lattice formation in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate
We study the response of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate to a sudden
turn-on of a rotating drive by solving the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii
equation. A weakly anisotropic rotating potential excites a quadrupole shape
oscillation and its time evolution is analyzed by the quasiparticle projection
method. A simple recurrence oscillation of surface mode populations is broken
in the quadrupole resonance region that depends on the trap anisotropy, causing
stochastization of the dynamics. In the presence of the phenomenological
dissipation, an initially irrotational condensate is found to undergo damped
elliptic deformation followed by unstable surface ripple excitations, some of
which develop into quantized vortices that eventually form a lattice. Recent
experimental results on the vortex nucleation should be explained not only by
the dynamical instability but also by the Landau instability; the latter is
necessary for the vortices to penetrate into the condensate.Comment: RevTex4, This preprint includes no figures. You can download the

‘It Takes Two Hands to Clap’: How Gaddi Shepherds in the Indian Himalayas Negotiate Access to Grazing
This article examines the effects of state intervention on the workings of informal institutions that coordinate the communal use and management of natural resources. Specifically it focuses on the case of the nomadic Gaddi
shepherds and official attempts to regulate their access to grazing pastures in the Indian Himalayas. It is often predicted that the increased presence of the modern state critically undermines locally appropriate and community-based resource management arrangements. Drawing on the work of Pauline Peters and Francis Cleaver, I identify key instances of socially embedded ‘common’ management institutions and explain the evolution of these arrangements
through dynamic interactions between individuals, communities and the agents of the state. Through describing the ‘living space’ of Gaddi shepherds across the annual cycle of nomadic migration with their flocks I explore the
ways in which they have been able to creatively reinterpret external interventions, and suggest how contemporary arrangements for accessing pasture at different moments of the annual cycle involve complex combinations of the
formal and the informal, the ‘traditional’ and the ‘modern’
Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the
nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events,
Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final
state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV
polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity
asymmetry for the selected events is = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +-
0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta
G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ 3
(GeV}/c)^2.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Measurement of the Spin Structure of the Deuteron in the DIS Region
We present a new measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and the
spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron in the range 1 GeV^2 <
Q^2 < 100 GeV^2 and 0.004< x <0.7. The data were obtained by the COMPASS
experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam and a large polarised
6-LiD target. The results are in agreement with those from previous experiments
and improve considerably the statistical accuracy in the region 0.004 < x <

Mechanisms of IRF2BPL-related disorders and identification of a potential therapeutic strategy
The recently discovered neurological disorder NEDAMSS is caused by heterozygous truncations in the transcriptional regulator IRF2BPL. Here, we reprogram patient skin fibroblasts to astrocytes and neurons to study mechanisms of this newly described disease. While full-length IRF2BPL primarily localizes to the nucleus, truncated patient variants sequester the wild-type protein to the cytoplasm and cause aggregation. Moreover, patient astrocytes fail to support neuronal survival in coculture and exhibit aberrant mitochondria and respiratory dysfunction. Treatment with the small molecule copper ATSM (CuATSM) rescues neuronal survival and restores mitochondrial function. Importantly, the in vitro findings are recapitulated in vivo, where co-expression of full-length and truncated IRF2BPL in Drosophila results in cytoplasmic accumulation of full-length IRF2BPL. Moreover, flies harboring heterozygous truncations of the IRF2BPL ortholog (Pits) display progressive motor defects that are ameliorated by CuATSM treatment. Our findings provide insights into mechanisms involved in NEDAMSS and reveal a promising treatment for this severe disorder
