Magnetic resonance imaging and pathological features of a mixed glioma in a dog: case report

    No full text
ABSTRACT The aim of this report was to describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and pathological features of a canine mixed glioma. A 12-year-old boxer male dog was presented for necropsy along with data from an MRI evaluation conducted ante-mortem. The images were examined and showed a poorly demarcated prosencephalic lesion, hyperintense on T2W images, hypointense on T1W images and heterogeneously hyperintense on T2W FLAIR images. There was mild nonuniform contrast enhancement, apparent midline shift, moderate perilesional edema and marked distortion of the adjacent lateral ventricle. The brain was evaluated macroscopically, microscopically and immunohistochemically. Grossly, there was a poorly demarcated soft mass, with areas of hemorrhage, within the left parietal and temporal lobes. Histologically, there was a densely cellular mass composed of two geographically distinct populations of neoplastic cells. The first population was composed of small and round cells organized in a honeycomb pattern. The second population constituted of intermingled streams and bundles of neoplastic cells that were strongly immunolabeled for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). The diagnosis of a mixed glioma was based on MRI findings, and mainly on histological and immunohistochemical findings

Mammary botryomycosis: two concomitant cases in mares: case report

    No full text
ABSTRACT Mammary disorders in mares are rare and usually only one animal per paddock is affected. In this report, two mares with 7 and 9 years old, were concomitantly diagnosis of chronic pyogranulomatous mastitis, associated with the Splendore-Hoeppli reaction, indicative of botryomycosis a rare, chronic suppurative disease with microabscess formation, characterized by in vivo formation of eosinophilic materials around microorganisms or biologically inert material. Various bacteria can cause botryomycosis in horses, and the most frequently isolated one is Staphylococcus sp., particularly S. aureus. This report confirms the role of Staphylococcus sp.; however, specifically S. hyicus and S. cohnii that prior to the current report, had not been associated with cases of botryomycosis

Nódulos fibro-histiocíticos no baço de uma cadela: relato de caso

    No full text

Immunohistochemical Staining Of The Macrophagic And Astrocytic Response In The Brainstem Of Wistar Rats Submitted To The Ethidium Bromide Gliotoxic Model And Treated With Cyclophosphamide [marcação Imuno-histoquímica Da Resposta Macrofágica E Astrocitária No Tronco Encefálico De Ratos Wistar Submetidos Ao Modelo Gliotóxico Do Brometo De Etídio E Tratados Com Ciclofosfamida]

The gliotoxic ethidium bromide (EB) was used to study morphologically the macrophagic and astrocytic response under immunosuppression by cyclophosphamide (CY). Astrocyte immunoreactivity to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and vimentin (VIM) and macrophagic immunoreactivity to ED1 were investigated after EB injection. Male Wistar rats were injected with 0.9% saline solution (group I), 0.1% BE (group II) and 0.1% EB associated with CY treatment (group III). Brainstem samples were collected from the 1st to the 21st day post-injection for GFAP, VIM and ED1 immunostaining. In groups II and III, it was observed increased immunoreactivity to GFAP and reexpression of VIM. In group II, ED1-positive cells were noted after the 2nd day and in group III, after the 3rd day. On the 14th day post-injection, it was observed a greater quantity of ED1- positive cells in group III than in group II. Apparently, CY did not change the astrocytic response pattern.643 B787793Graça, D.L., Mielinização, desmielinização e remielinização no sistema nervoso central (1998) Arq Neuro-psiquiatr, 46, pp. 292-297Raine, C.S., Morphology of myelin and myelination (1984) Myelin. 2.Ed., pp. 1-50. , Morell P (ed).
