Prominent bulk pinning effect in the MgB_2 superconductor
We report the magnetic-field dependence of the irreversible magnetization of
the recently discovered binary superconductor MgB. For the temperature
region of , the contribution of the bulk pinning to the
magnetization overwhelms that of the surface pinning. This was evident from the
fact that the magnetization curves, , were well described by the
critical-state model without considering the surface pinning effect. It was
also found that the curves at various temperatures scaled when the field
and the magnetization were normalized by the characteristic scaling factors
and , respectively. This feature suggests that the
pinning mechanism determining the hysteresis in is unique below .Comment: 4pages and 4 figures. Phys. Rev. B (accepted
Carbon doping of superconducting magnesium diboride
We present details of synthesis optimization and physical properties of
nearly single phase carbon doped MgB2 with a nominal stoichiometry of
Mg(B{0.8}C{0.2})2 synthesized from magnesium and boron carbide (B4C) as
starting materials. The superconducting transition temperature is ~ 22 K (~ 17
K lower than in pure MgB2). The temperature dependence of the upper critical
field is steeper than in pure MgB2 with Hc2(10K) ~ 9 T. Temperature dependent
specific heat data taken in different applied magnetic fields suggest that the
two-gap nature of superconductivity is still preserved for carbon doped MgB2
even with such a heavily suppressed transition temperature. In addition, the
anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field for T/Tc ~ 2/3 is gamma ~ 2. This
value is distinct from 1 (isotropic) and also distinct from 6 (the value found

Degeneracy in infinite horizon optimization
We consider sequential decision problems over an infinite horizon. The forecast or solution horizon approach to solving such problems requires that the optimal initial decision be unique. We show that multiple optimal initial decisions can exist in general and refer to their existence as degeneracy. We then present a conceptual cost perturbation algorithm for resolving degeneracy and identifying a forecast horizon. An Overview of the Basic Physical Properties of MgB
The basic physical properties of MgB have been well established over the
past two years of intensive research. At this point there is a general
consensus about the values for the isotope shift, critical fields, most of the
salient length scales, and general anisotropies. In this paper we will review
the determination of these parameters and set the stage for further, more

Consistency of the mass variation formula for black holes accreting cosmological fluids
We address the spherical accretion of generic fluids onto black holes. We
show that, if the black hole metric satisfies certain conditions, in the
presence of a test fluid it is possible to derive a fully relativistic
prescription for the black hole mass variation. Although the resulting equation
may seem obvious due to a form of it appearing as a step in the derivation of
the Schwarzschild metric, this geometrical argument is necessary to fix the
added degree of freedom one gets for allowing the mass to vary with time. This
result has applications on cosmological accretion models and provides a
derivation from first principles to serve as a base to the accretion equations

Naked Singularity Formation In f(R) Gravity
We study the gravitational collapse of a star with barotropic equation of
state in the context of theories of gravity.
Utilizing the metric formalism, we rewrite the field equations as those of
Brans-Dicke theory with vanishing coupling parameter. By choosing the
functionality of Ricci scalar as , we
show that for an appropriate initial value of the energy density, if
and satisfy certain conditions, the resulting singularity would be naked,
violating the cosmic censorship conjecture. These conditions are the ratio of
the mass function to the area radius of the collapsing ball, negativity of the
effective pressure, and the time behavior of the Kretschmann scalar. Also, as
long as parameter obeys certain conditions, the satisfaction of the

Production and Decay of D_1(2420)^0 and D_2^*(2460)^0
We have investigated and final states and
observed the two established charmed mesons, the with mass
MeV/c and width MeV/c and
the with mass MeV/c and width
MeV/c. Properties of these final states, including
their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments, have been
studied. We identify these two mesons as the doublet predicted
by HQET. We also obtain constraints on {\footnotesize } as a function of the cosine of the relative phase of the two

Measurement of the branching fraction for
We have studied the leptonic decay of the resonance into tau
pairs using the CLEO II detector. A clean sample of tau pair events is
identified via events containing two charged particles where exactly one of the
particles is an identified electron. We find . The result is consistent with

Study of the B^0 Semileptonic Decay Spectrum at the Upsilon(4S) Resonance
We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample
of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B0 -->
D*- l+ nu. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb**-1 of data collected at the
Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the
inclusive lepton spectrum from all Upsilon(4S) events in the same data set.
These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c.
From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B0 and B+
semileptonic branching fractions, b0 and b+, their ratio, and the production
ratio f+-/f00 of B+ and B0 pairs at the Upsilon(4S). We report b+/b0=0.950
(+0.117-0.080) +- 0.091, b0 = (10.78 +- 0.60 +- 0.69)%, and b+ = (10.25 +- 0.57
+- 0.65)%. b+/b0 is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes,

Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry Parameters in and
We have measured the weak decay asymmetry parameters (\aLC ) for two \LC\
decay modes. Our measurements are \aLC = -0.94^{+0.21+0.12}_{-0.06-0.06} for
the decay mode and \aLC = -0.45\pm 0.31 \pm
0.06 for the decay mode . By combining these
measurements with the previously measured decay rates, we have extracted the
parity-violating and parity-conserving amplitudes. These amplitudes are used to
