HyperK\"ahler quotients and N=4 gauge theories in D=2
We consider certain N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories in D=2 coupled to
quaternionic matter multiplets in a minimal way. These theories admit as
effective theories sigma-models on non-trivial HyperK\"ahler manifolds obtained
as HyperK\"ahler quotients. The example of ALE manifolds is discussed. (Based
on a talk given by P. Fr\'e at the F. Gursey Memorial Conference, Istanbul,
June 1994).Comment: 22 pages, Latex, no figure
Hyperkahler Metrics from Periodic Monopoles
Relative moduli spaces of periodic monopoles provide novel examples of
Asymptotically Locally Flat hyperkahler manifolds. By considering the
interactions between well-separated periodic monopoles, we infer the asymptotic
behavior of their metrics. When the monopole moduli space is four-dimensional,
this construction yields interesting examples of metrics with self-dual
curvature (gravitational instantons). We discuss their topology and complex
geometry. An alternative construction of these gravitational instantons using
moduli spaces of Hitchin equations is also described.Comment: 23 pages, latex. v2: an erroneous formula is corrected, and its

Monopoles and clusters
We define and study certain hyperkaehler manifolds which capture the
asymptotic behaviour of the SU(2)-monopole metric in regions where monopoles
break down into monopoles of lower charges. The rate at which these new metrics
approximate the monopole metric is exponential, as for the Gibbons-Manton
metric.Comment: v2.: relation to calorons mentioned; added explanation
Faster linearizability checking via -compositionality
Linearizability is a well-established consistency and correctness criterion
for concurrent data types. An important feature of linearizability is Herlihy
and Wing's locality principle, which says that a concurrent system is
linearizable if and only if all of its constituent parts (so-called objects)
are linearizable. This paper presents -compositionality, which generalizes
the idea behind the locality principle to operations on the same concurrent
data type. We implement -compositionality in a novel linearizability
checker. Our experiments with over nine implementations of concurrent sets,
including Intel's TBB library, show that our linearizability checker is one
order of magnitude faster and/or more space efficient than the state-of-the-art
algorithm.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure
Deformation of LeBrun's ALE metrics with negative mass
In this article we investigate deformations of a scalar-flat K\"ahler metric
on the total space of complex line bundles over CP^1 constructed by C. LeBrun.
In particular, we find that the metric is included in a one-dimensional family
of such metrics on the four-manifold, where the complex structure in the
deformation is not the standard one.Comment: 20 pages, no figure. V2: added two references, filled a gap in the
proof of Theorem 1.2. V3: corrected a wrong statement about Kuranishi family
of a Hirzebruch surface stated in the last paragraph in the proof of Theorem
1.2, and fixed a relevant error in the proof. Also added a reference [24]
about Kuranishi family of Hirzebruch surface
Branes, Instantons, And Taub-NUT Spaces
ALE and Taub-NUT (or ALF) hyper-Kahler four-manifolds can be naturally
constructed as hyper-Kahler quotients. In the ALE case, this construction has
long been understood in terms of D-branes; here we give a D-brane derivation in
the Taub-NUT case. Likewise, instantons on ALE spaces and on Taub-NUT spaces
have ADHM-like constructions related to hyper-Kahler quotients. Here we refine
the analysis in the Taub-NUT case by making use of a D-brane probe, and give an
application to M-theory.Comment: 63 p
Coisotropic deformations of associative algebras and dispersionless integrable hierarchies
The paper is an inquiry of the algebraic foundations of the theory of
dispersionless integrable hierarchies, like the dispersionless KP and modified
KP hierarchies and the universal Whitham's hierarchy of genus zero. It stands
out for the idea of interpreting these hierarchies as equations of coisotropic
deformations for the structure constants of certain associative algebras. It
discusses the link between the structure constants and the Hirota's tau
function, and shows that the dispersionless Hirota's bilinear equations are,
within this approach, a way of writing the associativity conditions for the
structure constants in terms of the tau function. It also suggests a simple
interpretation of the algebro-geometric construction of the universal Whitham's
equations of genus zero due to Krichever.Comment: minor misprints correcte
Paradox as invitation to act in problematic change situations
It has been argued that organizational life typically contains paradoxical situations such as efforts to manage change which nonetheless seem to reinforce inertia. Four logical options for coping with paradox have been explicated, three of which seek resolution and one of which ‘keeps the paradox open’. The purpose of this article is to explore the potential for managerial action where the paradox is held open through the use of theory on ‘serious playfulness’. Our argument is that paradoxes, as intrinsic features in organizational life, cannot always be resolved through cognitive processes. What may be possible, however, is that such paradoxes are transformed, or ‘moved on’ through action and as a result the overall change effort need not be stalled by the existence of embedded paradoxes
Noncommutative Topological Theories of Gravity
The possibility of noncommutative topological gravity arising in the same
manner as Yang-Mills theory is explored. We use the Seiberg-Witten map to
construct such a theory based on a SL(2,C) complex connection, from which the
Euler characteristic and the signature invariant are obtained. This gives us a
way towards the description of noncommutative gravitational instantons as well
as noncommutative local gravitational anomalies.Comment: 17+1 pages, LaTeX, no figures, some clarifications, comments and
