    Compilation of the data on the land withdrawals in Alaska

    Major decisions an the use and disposition of land in Alaska are being made by the State and Federal governments. These decisions will affect the utilization of all our land resources including minerals. Since minerals are an essential component of our existance, the availability and access to minerals is an important issue. There are approximately 2600 land orders and acts classifying land in Alaska that restrict the utilization of our minerals resources. As of April 1977, approximately twenty-six percent of Alaska, or 100,875,391 acres was open to mineral entry and location under the Federal Mining Laws and the State Mining and Mineral leasing Laws

    Closely related alpha-tropomyosin mRNAs in quail fibroblasts and skeletal muscle cells.

    We describe the analysis of two quail cDNA clones representing distinct but closely related alpha-tropomyosin mRNAs. cDNA clone cC101 corresponds to a 1.2-kilobase RNA which accumulates to high levels during myoblast differentiation and which encodes the major isoform of skeletal muscle alpha-tropomyosin. cDNA clone cC102 corresponds to a 2-kilobase RNA which is abundant in cultured embryonic skin fibroblasts and which encodes one of two alpha-tropomyosin-related fibroblast tropomyosins of 35,000 and 34,000 daltons apparent molecular mass (class 1 tropomyosins). The cC102 protein is unique among reported nonstriated-muscle tropomyosins in being identical in amino acid sequence to the major isoform of skeletal muscle alpha-tropomyosin over an uninterrupted stretch of at least 183 amino acids (residues 75-257). The two protein sequences differ in the COOH-terminal region beginning with residue 258. Because the cC101 and cC102 RNAs share an extensive region (at least 373 nucleotides) of nucleotide sequence identity upstream of the codon for residue 258, they are likely derived from a single gene by alternative RNA splicing, as was recently proposed in the case of related beta-tropomyosin mRNAs in human fibroblasts and skeletal muscle (MacLeod, A. R., Houlker, C., Reinach, R. C., Smillie, L. B., Talbot, K., Modi, G., and Walsh, F. S. (1985) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 82, 7835-7837). No alpha-tropomyosin-related RNAs are abundant in undifferentiated myoblasts. This suggests the possibility of a fibroblast-specific function, as opposed to a general nonmuscle-cell function for class 1 tropomyosins and also has implications for the regulation of alpha-tropomyosin gene expression during embryonic development

    We use the Quantum Hypernetted Chain Approximation (QHNC) to calculate the ion-ion and electron-ion correlations for liquid metallic Li, Be, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, and Ga. We discuss trends in electron-ion structure factors and radial distribution functions, and also calculate the free-atom and metallic-atom form-factors, focusing on how bonding effects affect the interpretation of X-ray scattering experiments, especially experimental measurements of the ion-ion structure factor in the liquid metallic phase.Comment: RevTeX, 19 pages, 7 figure

    Comparative analysis of c-kit gene expression and c-Kit immunoreactivity in horses with and without obstructive intestinal disease

    Previous immunohistochemical studies targeting the receptor tyrosine kinase (c-Kit) have demonstrated an apparent reduction in the number of gastrointestinal pacemaker cells--the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC)--in horses with intestinal motility disorders. This study compared the level of transcription of the c-kit gene encoding this receptor in horses with and without such motility disorders. Transcription levels of this gene were also compared to the density of ICC immunohistochemically positive for the c-Kit antigen. Intestinal samples were collected from 18 horses with intestinal disease and from 15 control animals. Following gene extraction and identification, real-time quantitative analysis of c-kit and a control gene, ACTB (β-actin), was carried out on all samples and the density of the c-Kit-positive ICC compared. There was a significant reduction in c-Kit immunoreactivity in the ICC of horses with large intestinal obstructive disorders relative to controls but no significant difference in the transcription of the c-kit gene between normal and affected animals. Further studies will be required to elucidate the mechanisms regulating c-Kit expression and to assess the pathophysiological significance of these findings

    We analyze the behavior of a suspension of rigid rod-like particles in shear flow using a modified version of the Doi model, and construct diagrams for phase coexistence under conditions of constant imposed stress and constant imposed strain rate, among paranematic, flow-aligning nematic, and log-rolling nematic states. We calculate the effective constitutive relations that would be measured through the regime of phase separation into shear bands. We calculate phase coexistence by examining the stability of interfacial steady states and find a wide range of possible ``phase'' behaviors.Comment: 23 pages 19 figures, revised version to be published in Physical Review

    Obesity is associated with worse quality of life in women with gynecologic malignancies: An opportunity to improve patient-centered outcomes

    BACKGROUND: The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of obesity on pretreatment quality of life (QoL) in gynecologic oncology patients. METHODS: The authors analyzed collected data from an institution-wide cohort study of women with gynecologic cancers enrolled from August 2012 to June 2013. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General, site-specific symptom scales, and the National Institutes of Health Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) global mental and physical health tools were administered. Survey results were linked to clinical data abstracted from medical records (demographics and comorbid conditions). Bivariate tests and multivariate linear regression models were used to evaluate factors associated with QoL scores. RESULTS: A total of 182 women with ovarian, uterine, cervical, and vulvar/vaginal cancers were identified; of these, 152 (84%) were assessed before surgery. Mean body mass index was 33.5 kg/m2 and race included white (120 patients [79%]), black (22 patients [15%]), and other (10 patients [6.5%]). A total of 98 patients (64.5%) were obese (body mass index ≥30). On multivariate analysis, subscales for functional (17 vs 19; P=.04), emotional (16 vs 19; P=.008), and social (22 vs 24; P=.02) well-being as well as overall Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General scores (77 vs 86; P5.002) and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System global physical health scores (45 vs 49; P=.003) were found to be significantly lower in obese versus nonobese patients. CONCLUSIONS: Before cancer treatment, obese patients with gynecologic malignancies appear to have worse baseline QoL than their normal-weight counterparts. Emerging models of QoL-based cancer outcome measures may disproportionately affect populations with a high obesity burden. The potential disparate impact of cancer therapy on longitudinal QoL in the obese versus nonobese patients needs to be evaluated

    Active Brownian Particles. From Individual to Collective Stochastic Dynamics

    We review theoretical models of individual motility as well as collective dynamics and pattern formation of active particles. We focus on simple models of active dynamics with a particular emphasis on nonlinear and stochastic dynamics of such self-propelled entities in the framework of statistical mechanics. Examples of such active units in complex physico-chemical and biological systems are chemically powered nano-rods, localized patterns in reaction-diffusion system, motile cells or macroscopic animals. Based on the description of individual motion of point-like active particles by stochastic differential equations, we discuss different velocity-dependent friction functions, the impact of various types of fluctuations and calculate characteristic observables such as stationary velocity distributions or diffusion coefficients. Finally, we consider not only the free and confined individual active dynamics but also different types of interaction between active particles. The resulting collective dynamical behavior of large assemblies and aggregates of active units is discussed and an overview over some recent results on spatiotemporal pattern formation in such systems is given.Comment: 161 pages, Review, Eur Phys J Special-Topics, accepte
