    Virial series for fluids of hard hyperspheres in odd dimensions

    A recently derived method [R. D. Rohrmann and A. Santos, Phys. Rev. E. {\bf 76}, 051202 (2007)] to obtain the exact solution of the Percus-Yevick equation for a fluid of hard spheres in (odd) dd dimensions is used to investigate the convergence properties of the resulting virial series. This is done both for the virial and compressibility routes, in which the virial coefficients BjB_j are expressed in terms of the solution of a set of (d1)/2(d-1)/2 coupled algebraic equations which become nonlinear for d5d \geq 5. Results have been derived up to d=13d=13. A confirmation of the alternating character of the series for d5d\geq 5, due to the existence of a branch point on the negative real axis, is found and the radius of convergence is explicitly determined for each dimension. The resulting scaled density per dimension 2η1/d2 \eta^{1/d}, where η\eta is the packing fraction, is wholly consistent with the limiting value of 1 for dd \to \infty. Finally, the values for BjB_j predicted by the virial and compressibility routes in the Percus-Yevick approximation are compared with the known exact values [N. Clisby and B. M. McCoy, J. Stat.     Spatial variation of aerosol properties over Europe derived from satellite observations and comparison with model calculations

    International audienceAerosol optical depths (AOD) and Angström coefficients over Europe were retrieved using data from the ATSR-2 radiometer on board the ESA satellite ERS-2, for August 1997. Taking advantage of the nadir and forward view of the ATSR-2, the dual view algorithm was used over land to eliminate the influence of the surface reflection. Over sea the AOD was retrieved using only the forward observations. Retrieved aerosol optical properties are in good agreement with those from ground-based sunphotometers. The AOD and Angström coefficients together yield information on the column integrated effective aerosol distribution. Observed regional variations of the AOD and Angström coefficient are related to anthropogenic emissions of aerosol precursors such as SO2 and NOx in the major European industrial and urban areas, and their subsequent transformation into the aerosol phase. The influence of anthropogenic aerosols such as ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate on the total AOD is estimated using a regional chemistry transport model. Sulphate is estimated to contribute from 15% in very clean areas to 70% in polluted areas, the contribution of nitrate is between 5% and 25% over most of Europe.     The aims of this review are: (1) describing the principal lower extremity injury prevention programs in young athletes that have a demonstrated efficacy, whose prevention have been destined for ball team sports, do not require any additional material for their application and the duration allows for their implementation as previous warm-upprograms; and (2) analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the prevention strategies according to their possibility of implantation in the regular sport practice. For this purpose, a total of 5 neuromuscular injury prevention programs were selected. Although all the programs have shownpositive effects in terms of the reduction of sport injury incidence, the detailed analysis of the characteristics of the prevention strategies recommend the utilization of the FIFA 11+ and Knäkontroll programs for their greater adaptability to the application context and their facility for the implementation in the regular sport practice.Los objetivos de esta revisión son: (1) describir los principales programas de prevención de lesiones de la extremidad inferior en jóvenes deportistas que cuentan con una eficacia demostrada, cuya prevención ha estado dirigida a deportes colectivos de balón, no requieren de material adicional para su aplicación y la duración permite su implementación como calentamiento previo a la práctica deportiva; y (2) analizar las ventajas e inconvenientes de las medidas preventivas de acuerdo a su posibilidad de implantación de manera regular en el deporte. Para ello, un total de 5 programas neuromuscularespara la prevenciónde lesiones fueron seleccionados.     Recently, an exact description of instanton corrections to the moduli spaces of 4d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on a circle and Calabi-Yau compactifications of Type II superstring theories was found. The equations determining the instanton contributions turn out to have the form of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. We explore further this relation and, in particular, we identify the contact potential of quaternionic string moduli space with the free energy of the integrable system and the Kahler potential of the gauge theory moduli space with the Yang-Yang functional. We also show that the corresponding S-matrix satisfies all usual constraints of 2d integrable models, including crossing and bootstrap, and derive the associated Y-system. Surprisingly, in the simplest case the Y-system is described by the MacMahon function relevant for crystal melting and topological strings.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur

    S-duality in Twistor Space

    In type IIB string compactifications on a Calabi-Yau threefold, the hypermultiplet moduli space MHM_H must carry an isometric action of the modular group SL(2,Z), inherited from the S-duality symmetry of type IIB string theory in ten dimensions. We investigate how this modular symmetry is realized at the level of the twistor space of MHM_H, and construct a general class of SL(2,Z)-invariant quaternion-Kahler metrics with two commuting isometries, parametrized by a suitably covariant family of holomorphic transition functions. This family should include MHM_H corrected by D3-D1-D(-1)-instantons (with fivebrane corrections ignored) and, after taking a suitable rigid limit, the Coulomb branch of five-dimensional N=2 gauge theories compactified on a torus, including monopole string instantons. These results allow us to considerably simplify the derivation of the mirror map between type IIA and IIB fields in the sector where only D1-D(-1)-instantons are retained.Comment: 29 pages, 1 figur

    Radial and tangential migration of telencephalic somatostatin neurons originated from the mouse diagonal area

    The telencephalic subpallium is the source of various GABAergic interneuron cohorts that invade the pallium via tangential migration. Based on genoarchitectonic studies, the subpallium has been subdivided into four major domains: striatum, pallidum, diagonal area and preoptic area (Puelles et al. 2013; Allen Developing Mouse Brain Atlas), and a larger set of molecularly distinct progenitor areas (Flames et al. 2007). Fate mapping, genetic lineage-tracing studies, and other approaches have suggested that each subpallial subdivision produces specific sorts of inhibitory interneurons, distinguished by differential peptidic content, which are distributed tangentially to pallial and subpallial target territories (e.g., olfactory bulb, isocortex, hippocampus, pallial and subpallial amygdala, striatum, pallidum, septum). In this report, we map descriptively the early differentiation and apparent migratory dispersion of mouse subpallial somatostatin-expressing (Sst) cells from E10.5 onward, comparing their topography with the expression patterns of the genes Dlx5, Gbx2, Lhx7-8, Nkx2.1, Nkx5.1 (Hmx3), and Shh, which variously label parts of the subpallium. Whereas some experimental results suggest that Sst cells are pallidal, our data reveal that many, if not most, telencephalic Sst cells derive from de diagonal area (Dg). Sst-positive cells initially only present at the embryonic Dg selectively populate radially the medial part of the bed nucleus striae terminalis (from paraseptal to amygdaloid regions) and part of the central amygdala; they also invade tangentially the striatum, while eschewing the globus pallidum and the preoptic area, and integrate within most cortical and nuclear pallial areas between E10.5 and E16.5.This work was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation grant BFU2008-04156, and SENECA Foundation contract 0458/GERM/06-10891 to L.P.; and the Local Government of Castilla-La Mancha grant PII1I09-0065-8194 to C.D.     Heterotic-Type II duality in the hypermultiplet sector

    We revisit the duality between heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x T^2 and type IIA compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold X in the hypermultiplet sector. We derive an explicit map between the field variables of the respective moduli spaces at the level of the classical effective actions. We determine the parametrization of the K3 moduli space consistent with the Ferrara-Sabharwal form. From the expression of the holomorphic prepotential we are led to conjecture that both X and its mirror must be K3 fibrations in order for the type IIA theory to have an heterotic dual. We then focus on the region of the moduli space where the metric is expressed in terms of a prepotential on both sides of the duality. Applying the duality we derive the heterotic hypermultiplet metric for a gauge bundle which is reduced to 24 point-like instantons. This result is confirmed by using the duality between the heterotic theory on T^3 and M-theory on K3. We finally study the hyper-Kaehler metric on the moduli space of an SU(2) bundle on K3.Comment: 27 pages; references added, typos correcte
