    Georgia law prohibits any foreign corporation—a corporation with an originating registration initiated in a state other than Georgia—from transacting business in the state until it obtains a certificate of authority from the Georgia Secretary of State. Attorneys advise foreign corporations to register as a matter of course, and business owners readily comply. Georgia is not unique in its registration requirement. Every state in the union has enacted such a statute. But very few states require a foreign corporation to forfeit the guarantees of due process as a condition for transacting business in the state.     Statistics of Solar Wind Electron Breakpoint Energies Using Machine Learning Techniques

    Solar wind electron velocity distributions at 1 au consist of a thermal "core" population and two suprathermal populations: "halo" and "strahl". The core and halo are quasi-isotropic, whereas the strahl typically travels radially outwards along the parallel and/or anti-parallel direction with respect to the interplanetary magnetic field. With Cluster-PEACE data, we analyse energy and pitch angle distributions and use machine learning techniques to provide robust classifications of these solar wind populations. Initially, we use unsupervised algorithms to classify halo and strahl differential energy flux distributions to allow us to calculate relative number densities, which are of the same order as previous results. Subsequently, we apply unsupervised algorithms to phase space density distributions over ten years to study the variation of halo and strahl breakpoint energies with solar wind parameters. In our statistical study, we find both halo and strahl suprathermal breakpoint energies display a significant increase with core temperature, with the halo exhibiting a more positive correlation than the strahl. We conclude low energy strahl electrons are scattering into the core at perpendicular pitch angles. This increases the number of Coulomb collisions and extends the perpendicular core population to higher energies, resulting in a larger difference between halo and strahl breakpoint energies at higher core temperatures. Statistically, the locations of both suprathermal breakpoint energies decrease with increasing solar wind speed. In the case of halo breakpoint energy, we observe two distinct profiles above and below 500 km/s.     Unequal relationships in high and low power distance societies: a comparative study of tutor - student role relations in Britain and China

    This study investigated people's conceptions of an unequal role relationship in two different types of society: a high power distance society and a low power distance society. The study focuses on the role relationship of tutor and student. British and Chinese tutors and postgraduate students completed a questionnaire that probed their conceptions of degrees of power differential and social distance/closeness in this role relationship. ANOVA results yielded a significant nationality effect for both aspects. Chinese respondents judged the relationship to be closer and to have a greater power differential than did British respondents. Written comments on the questionnaire and interviews with 9 Chinese academics who had experienced both British and Chinese academic environments supported the statistical findings and indicated that there are fundamental ideological differences associated with the differing conceptions. The results are discussed in relation to Western and Asian concepts of leadership and differing perspectives on the compatibility/incompatibility of power and distance/closeness

    Effect of suspension systems on the physiological and psychological responses to sub-maximal biking on simulated smooth and bumpy tracks

    The aim of this study was to compare the physiological and psychological responses of cyclists riding on a hard tail bicycle and on a full suspension bicycle. Twenty males participated in two series of tests. A test rig held the front axle of the bicycle steady while the rear wheel rotated against a heavy roller with bumps (or no bumps) on its surface. In the first series of tests, eight participants (age 19 – 27 years, body mass 65 – 82 kg) were tested on both the full suspension and hard tail bicycles with and without bumps fitted to the roller. The second series of test repeated the bump tests with a further six participants (age 22 – 31 years, body mass 74 – 94 kg) and also involved an investigation of familiarization effects with the final six participants (age 21 – 30 years, body mass 64 – 80 kg). Heart rate, oxygen consumption (VO<sub>2</sub>), rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and comfort were recorded during 10 min sub-maximal tests. Combined data for the bumps tests show that the full suspension bicycle was significantly different (P < 0.001) from the hard tail bicycle on all four measures. Oxygen consumption, heart rate and RPE were lower on average by 8.7 (s = 3.6) ml · kg<sup>-1</sup> · min<sup>-1</sup>, 32.1 (s = 12.1) beats · min<sup>-1</sup> and 2.6 (s = 2.0) units, respectively. Comfort scores were higher (better) on average by 1.9 (s = 0.8) units. For the no bumps tests, the only statistically significant difference (P = 0.008) was in VO<sub>2</sub>, which was lower for the hard tail bicycle by 2.2 (s = 1.7) ml · kg-1 · min<sup>-1</sup>. The results indicate that the full suspension bicycle provides a physiological and psychological advantage over the hard tail bicycle during simulated sub-maximal exercise on bumps

    Dark Matter and Baryon Fraction at the Virial Radius in Abell 2256

    We combine ASCA and ROSAT X-ray data to constrain the radial dark matter distribution in the primary cluster of A2256, free from the isothermality assumption. Both instruments indicate that the temperature declines with radius. The region including the central galaxy has a multicomponent spectrum, which results in a wide range of allowed central temperatures. We find that the secondary subcluster has a temperature and luminosity typical of a rich cluster; however, the ASCA temperature map shows no signs of an advanced merger. It is therefore assumed that the primary cluster is in hydrostatic equilibrium. The data then require dark matter density profiles steeper than rho ~ r^-2.5 in its outer part. Acceptable models have a total mass within r=1.5 Mpc (the virial radius) of 6.0+-1.5 10^14 Msun at the 90% confidence, about 1.6 times smaller than the mass derived assuming isothermality. Near the center, dark matter profiles with and without central cusps are consistent with the data. Total mass inside the X-ray core (r=0.26 Mpc) is 1.28+-0.08 10^14 Msun, which exceeds the isothermal value by a factor of 1.4. Although the confidence intervals above may be underestimates since they do not include possible asymmetry and departures from hydrostatic equilibrium, the behavior of the mass distribution, if applicable to other clusters, can bring into better agreement X-ray and lensing mass estimates, but aggravate the ``baryon catastrophe''. The observed considerable increase in the gas content with radius, not anticipated by simulations, may imply that a significant fraction of thermal gas energy comes from sources other than gravity and merger shocks.Comment: Added dynamic argument against advanced merger.     Competing associations in six-species predator-prey models

    We study a set of six-species ecological models where each species has two predators and two preys. On a square lattice the time evolution is governed by iterated invasions between the neighboring predator-prey pairs chosen at random and by a site exchange with a probability Xs between the neutral pairs. These models involve the possibility of spontaneous formation of different defensive alliances whose members protect each other from the external invaders. The Monte Carlo simulations show a surprisingly rich variety of the stable spatial distributions of species and subsequent phase transitions when tuning the control parameter Xs. These very simple models are able to demonstrate that the competition between these associations influences their composition. Sometimes the dominant association is developed via a domain growth. In other cases larger and larger invasion processes preceed the prevalence of one of the stable asociations. Under some conditions the survival of all the species can be maintained by the cyclic dominance occuring between these associations.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

    On the Origins of Starburst and Post-Starburst Galaxies in Nearby Clusters

    HST WFPC2 images in B (F450W) and I (F814W) have been obtained for three starburst (SB) and two post-starburst (PSB) galaxies in the Coma cluster, and for three such galaxies in the cluster DC2048-52. V (F555W) and I images for an additional PSB galaxy in Coma have been extracted from the archive. Seven of these galaxies were previously classified as E/S0 on the basis of ground-based images, one as Sa, and the other as an irregular. The HST images reveal these SB/PSB galaxies to be heterogeneous in morphology. Nevertheless a common theme is that many of them, especially the SB galaxies, tend to have centralized spiral structure that appears simply as a bright ``bulge''on ground-based images. In addition, while some PSB galaxies exhibit distinct spiral structure, on the whole they have smoother morphologies than the SB galaxies. The morphologies and luminosity profiles are generally consistent with substantial starbursts in the form of centralized spiral structure (the SB galaxies) which fade into smoother morphologies (the PSB galaxies), with lingering spectroscopic evidence for past central starbursts.
