    Remote measurement of turbidity and chlorophyll through aerial photography

    Studies were conducted utilizing six different film and filter combinations to quantitatively detect chlorophyll and turbidity in six farm ponds. The low range of turbidity from 0-35 JTU correlated well with the density readings from the green band of normal color film and the high range above 35 JTU was found to correlate with density readings in the red band of color infrared film. The effect of many of the significant variables can be reduced by using standardized procedures in taking the photography. Attempts to detect chlorophyll were masked by the turbidity. The ponds which were highly turbid also had high chlorophyll concentrations; whereas, the ponds with low turbidity also had low chlorophyll concentrations. This prevented a direct correlation for this parameter. Several suggested approaches are cited for possible future investigations

    1^{1}H-NMR spin-echo measurements of the static and dynamic spin properties in λ\lambda-(BETS)2_{2}FeCl4_{4}

    1^{1}H-NMR spin-echo measurements of the spin-echo decay M(2τ)M(2\tau) with a decay rate 1/T2T_{2} and the frequency shift Δν/ν0\Delta\nu/\nu_{0} under applied magnetic field B\mathbf{B}0_{0} = 9 T along the a-axis over a temperature range 2.0−-180 K are reported for a single crystal of the organic conductor λ\lambda-(BETS)2_{2}FeCl4_{4}. It provides the spin dynamic and static properties in the paramagnetic metal (PM) and antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) states as well as across the PM−-AFI phase transition. A large slow beat structure in the spin-echo decay is observed with a typical beat frequency of ff ∼\sim 7 kHz and it varies across the spectrum. Its origin is attributed to the 1^{1}H−-1^{1}H dipole interactions rather than to the much larger dipolar field contribution from the Fe3+^{3+} electrons (spin SS = 5/2). A simple phenomenological model provides an excellent fit to the data. The dominant 1^{1}H-NMR frequency shift comes from the dipolar field from the 3d Fe3+^{3+} ions, and the Fe3+^{3+} −- Fe3+^{3+} exchange interactions (J0J_{0}) (J0J_{0} includes the d−-d exchange interactions through the π−\pi-electrons) have a substantial effect to the local field at the proton sites expecially at low temperatures. A good fit is obtained with J0J_{0} = - 1.7 K. The data of the spin-echo decay rate 1/T2T_{2} indicates that there is a significant change in the slow fluctuations of the local magnetic field at the 1^{1}H-sites on traversing the PM to AFI phase. This evidence supports earlier reports that the PM−-AFI phase transition in λ\lambda-(BETS)2_{2}% FeCl4_{4} is driven magnetically and first order.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, resubmitted to Phys.     Analysing I/O bottlenecks in LHC data analysis on grid storage resources

    We describe recent I/O testing frameworks that we have developed and applied within the UK GridPP Collaboration, the ATLAS experiment and the DPM team, for a variety of distinct purposes. These include benchmarking vendor supplied storage products, discovering scaling limits of SRM solutions, tuning of storage systems for experiment data analysis, evaluating file access protocols, and exploring I/O read patterns of experiment software and their underlying event data models. With multiple grid sites now dealing with petabytes of data, such studies are becoming essential. We describe how the tests build, and improve, on previous work and contrast how the use-cases differ. We also detail the results obtained and the implications for storage hardware, middleware and experiment software

    Fibroblast migration and collagen deposition during dermal wound healing: mathematical modelling and clinical implications,

    The extent to which collagen alignment occurs during dermal wound healing determines the severity of scar tissue formation. We have modelled this using a multiscale approach, in which extracellular materials, for example collagen and fibrin, are modelled as continua, while fibroblasts are considered as discrete units. Within this model framework, we have explored the effects that different parameters have on the alignment process, and we have used the model to investigate how manipulation of transforming growth factor-β levels can reduce scar tissue formation. We briefly review this body of work, then extend the modelling framework to investigate the role played by leucocyte signalling in wound repair. To this end, fibroblast migration and collagen deposition within both the wound region and healthy peripheral tissue are considered. Trajectories of individual fibroblasts are determined as they migrate towards the wound region under the combined influence of collagen/fibrin alignment and gradients in a paracrine chemoattractant produced by leucocytes. The effects of a number of different physiological and cellular parameters upon the collagen alignment and repair integrity are assessed. These parameters include fibroblast concentration, cellular speed, fibroblast sensitivity to chemoattractant concentration and chemoattractant diffusion coefficient. Our results show that chemoattractant gradients lead to increased collagen alignment at the interface between the wound and the healthy tissue. Results show that there is a trade-off between wound integrity and the degree of scarring. The former is found to be optimized under conditions of a large chemoattractant diffusion coefficient, while the latter can be minimized when repair takes place in the presence of a competitive inhibitor to chemoattractants
