Non-commutative Complex Projective Spaces and the Standard Model
The standard model fermion spectrum, including a right handed neutrino, can
be obtained as a zero-mode of the Dirac operator on a space which is the
product of complex projective spaces of complex dimension two and three. The
construction requires the introduction of topologically non-trivial background
gauge fields. By borrowing from ideas in Connes' non-commutative geometry and
making the complex spaces `fuzzy' a matrix approximation to the fuzzy space
allows for three generations to emerge. The generations are associated with
three copies of space-time. Higgs' fields and Yukawa couplings can be

An Early Universe Model with Stiff Matter and a Cosmological Constant
In the present work, we study the quantum cosmology description of a
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model in the presence of a stiff matter perfect
fluid and a negative cosmological constant. We work in the Schutz's variational
formalism and the spatial sections have constant negative curvature. We
quantize the model and obtain the appropriate Wheeler-DeWitt equation. In this
model the states are bounded therefore we compute the discrete energy spectrum
and the corresponding eigenfunctions. In the present work, we consider only the
negative eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenfunctions. This choice
implies that the energy density of the perfect fluid is negative. A stiff
matter perfect fluid with this property produces a model with a bouncing
solution, at the classical level, free from an initial singularity. After that,
we use the eigenfunctions in order to construct wave packets and evaluate the
time-dependent expectation value of the scale factor. We find that it
oscillates between maximum and minimum values. Since the expectation value of
the scale factor never vanishes, we confirm that this model is free from an

The Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS-2): Compact Source Catalogue
We present the first data release from the second epoch Molonglo Galactic
Plane Survey (MGPS-2). MGPS-2 was carried out with the Molonglo Observatory
Synthesis Telescope at a frequency of 843 MHz and with a restoring beam of 45
arcsec x 45 arcsec cosec(dec), making it the highest resolution large scale
radio survey of the southern Galactic plane. It covers the range |b| < 10 deg
and 245 deg < l < 365 deg and is the Galactic counterpart to the Sydney
University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) which covers the whole southern sky with
dec 10 deg).
In this paper we present the MGPS-2 compact source catalogue. The catalogue
has 48,850 sources above a limiting peak brightness of 10 mJy/beam. Positions
in the catalogue are accurate to 1 arcsec - 2 arcsec. A full catalogue
including extended sources is in preparation. We have carried out an analysis
of the compact source density across the Galactic plane and find that the
source density is not statistically higher than the density expected from the
extragalactic source density alone.
We also present version 2.0 of the SUMSS image data and catalogue which are
now available online. The data consists of 629 4.3 deg x 4.3 deg mosaic images
covering the 8100 deg^2 of sky with dec 10 deg. The
catalogue contains 210,412 radio sources to a limiting peak brightness of 6
mJy/beam at dec -50 deg. We describe the
updates and improvements made to the SUMSS cataloguing process.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, to be published in MNRAS Note that Figures 8 and

Color enhancement of landsat agricultural imagery: JPL LACIE image processing support task
Color enhancement techniques were applied to LACIE LANDSAT segments to determine if such enhancement can assist analysis in crop identification. The procedure involved increasing the color range by removing correlation between components. First, a principal component transformation was performed, followed by contrast enhancement to equalize component variances, followed by an inverse transformation to restore familiar color relationships. Filtering was applied to lower order components to reduce color speckle in the enhanced products. Use of single acquisition and multiple acquisition statistics to control the enhancement were compared, and the effects of normalization investigated. Evaluation is left to LACIE personnel

holes in the world-sheet. We focus on the case of Dirichlet string theory,
which we argue should be formulated differently than in previous work, and we

Second year technical report on-board processing for future satellite communications systems
Advanced baseband and microwave switching techniques for large domestic communications satellites operating in the 30/20 GHz frequency bands are discussed. The nominal baseband processor throughput is one million packets per second (1.6 Gb/s) from one thousand T1 carrier rate customer premises terminals. A frequency reuse factor of sixteen is assumed by using 16 spot antenna beams with the same 100 MHz bandwidth per beam and a modulation with a one b/s per Hz bandwidth efficiency. Eight of the beams are fixed on major metropolitan areas and eight are scanning beams which periodically cover the remainder of the U.S. under dynamic control. User signals are regenerated (demodulated/remodulated) and message packages are reformatted on board. Frequency division multiple access and time division multiplex are employed on the uplinks and downlinks, respectively, for terminals within the coverage area and dwell interval of a scanning beam. Link establishment and packet routing protocols are defined. Also described is a detailed design of a separate 100 x 100 microwave switch capable of handling nonregenerated signals occupying the remaining 2.4 GHz bandwidth with 60 dB of isolation, at an estimated weight and power consumption of approximately 400 kg and 100 W, respectively
Attractor Universe in the Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravitation
In the scalar-tensor theory of gravitation it seems nontrivial to establish
if solutions of the cosmological equations in the presence of a cosmological
constant behave as attractors independently of the initial values. We develop a
general formulation in terms of two-dimensional phase space. We show that there
are two kinds of fixed points, one of which is an attractor depending on the
coupling constant and equation of state. In the case with a power-law potential
in the Jordan frame, we also find new type of inflation caused by the coupling
to the matter fluid
The FUSE survey of OVI absorption in and near the Galaxy
We present FUSE observations of OVI absorption in a sample of 100
extragalactic targets and 2 distant halo stars. We describe the details of the
calibration, alignment in velocity, continuum fitting, and manner in which
contaminants were removed (Galactic H2, absorption intrinsic to the background
target and intergalactic Ly-beta lines). We searched for OVI absorption in the
velocity range -1200 to 1200 km/s. With a few exceptions, we only find OVI
between -400 and 400 km/s; the exceptions may be intergalactic OVI. We discuss
the separation of the observed OVI absorption into components associated with
the Galactic halo and components at high-velocity, which are probably located
in the neighborhood of the Galaxy. We describe the measurements of equivalent
width and column density, and we analyze the different contributions to the
errors. We conclude that low-velocity Galactic OVI absorption occurs along all
sightlines - the few non-detections only occur in noisy spectra. We further
show that high-velocity OVI is very common, having equivalent width >65 mAA in
50% of the sightlines and >30 mAA in 70% of the high-quality sightlines. The
high-velocity OVI absorption has velocities relative to the LSR of
+/-(100--330) km/s; there is no correlation between velocity and absorption
strength. We present 50 km/s wide OVI channel maps. These show evidence for the
imprint of Galactic rotation. They also highlight two known HI high-velocity
clouds (complex~C and the Magellanic Stream). The channel maps further show
that OVI at velocities <-200 km/s occurs along all sightlines in the region
l=20-150, b200 km/s occurs along all sightlines

Integrated digital/electric aircraft concepts study
The integrated digital/electrical aircraft (IDEA) is an aircraft concept which employs all electric secondary power systems and advanced digital flight control systems. After trade analysis, preferred systems were applied to the baseline configuration. An additional configuration, the alternate IDEA, was also considered. For this concept the design ground rules were relaxed in order to quantify additional synergistic benefits. It was proposed that an IDEA configuration and technical risks associated with the IDEA systems concepts be defined and the research and development required activities to reduce these risks be identified. The selected subsystems include: power generation, power distribution, actuators, environmental control system and flight controls systems. When the aircraft was resized, block fuel was predicted to decrease by 11.3 percent, with 7.9 percent decrease in direct operating cost. The alternate IDEA shows a further 3.4 percent reduction in block fuel and 3.1 percent reduction in direct operating cost
