Growth, distance to frontier and composition of human capital
We examine the contribution of human capital to economy-wide technological
improvements through the two channels of innovation and imitation.
We develop a theoretical model showing that skilled labor has
a higher growth-enhancing effect closer to the technological frontier under
the reasonable assumption that innovation is a relatively more skill intensive
activity than imitation. Also, we provide evidence in favor of
this prediction using a panel dataset covering 19 OECD countries between
1960 and 2000 and explain why previous empirical research had found no
positive relationship between initial schooling level and subsequent growth
in rich countries. In particular, we show that in OECD economies it is
crucial to isolate the two separate margins of primary/secondary and tertiary
education. Interestingly, the latter type of schooling proves to be a
factor of economic divergence
Spitzer Observations of CO2 Ice Towards Field Stars in the Taurus Molecular Cloud
We present the first Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph observations of the 15.2
micron bending mode of CO2 ice towards field stars behind a quiescent dark
cloud. CO2 ice is detected towards 2 field stars (Elias 16, Elias 3) and a
single protostar (HL Tau) with anabundance of ~15-20% relative to water ice.
CO2 ice is not detected towards the source with lowest extinction in our
sample, Tamura 17 (A_V = 3.9m). A comparison of the Elias 16 spectrum with
laboratory data demonstrates that the majority of CO2 ice is embedded in a
polar H2O-rich ice component, with ~15% of CO2 residing in an apolar H2O-poor
mantle. This is the first detection of apolar CO2 towards a field star. We find
that the CO2 extinction threshold is A_V = 4m +/- 1m, comparable to the
threshold for water ice, but significantly less than the threshold for CO ice,
the likely precursor of CO2. Our results confirm CO2 ice forms in tandem with
H2O ice along quiescent lines of sight. This argues for CO2 ice formation via a
mechanism similar to that responsible for H2O ice formation, viz. simple
catalytic reactions on grain surfaces.Comment: Accepted by Astrophysical Journal Letter
Building an ontology catalogue for smart cities
Apart from providing semantics and reasoning power to data, ontologies enable and facilitate interoperability across heterogeneous systems or environments. A good practice when developing ontologies is to reuse as much knowledge as possible in order to increase interoperability by reducing heterogeneity across models and to reduce development effort. Ontology registries, indexes and catalogues facilitate the task of finding, exploring and reusing ontologies by collecting them from different sources. This paper presents an ontology catalogue for the smart cities and related domains. This catalogue is based on curated metadata and incorporates ontology evaluation features. Such catalogue represents the first approach within this community and it would be highly useful for new ontology developments or for describing and annotating existing ontologies
Temporal resolution deficits in the visual fields of MS patients
AbstractWe assessed the relationship between temporal resolution and MS-induced neuropathy. A diagnostic strategy comprising assessments of temporal resolution at 16 points in the extra-foveal visual field up to 12° from the fovea was first compared with foveal temporal resolution and with a standard VEP procedure in the same MS patients. At the group level, foveal temporal resolution was less sensitive to demyelination than the 16-point diagnostic strategy, the detection rate of which was comparable to that of the VEP procedure. Cross-sensitivity of the VEP and the 16-point diagnostic procedure was low. Subsequently, the average severity of MS-induced temporal resolution deficits was studied at three retinal loci of the same size but different eccentricities. Foveal deficits were not significantly greater than more peripheral deficits within the central 12°
Constraints on the H2O formation mechanism in the wind of carbon-rich AGB stars
Context. The recent detection of warm HO vapor emission from the outflows
of carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars challenges the current
understanding of circumstellar chemistry. Two mechanisms have been invoked to
explain warm HO vapor formation. In the first, periodic shocks passing
through the medium immediately above the stellar surface lead to HO
formation. In the second, penetration of ultraviolet interstellar radiation
through a clumpy circumstellar medium leads to the formation of HO
molecules in the intermediate wind.
Aims. We aim to determine the properties of HO emission for a sample of
18 carbon-rich AGB stars and subsequently constrain which of the above
mechanisms provides the most likely warm HO formation pathway.
