Diffraction based Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometry performed at a hard x-ray free-electron laser
We demonstrate experimentally Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) interferometry at
a hard X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) on a sample diffraction patterns. This
is different from the traditional approach when HBT interferometry requires
direct beam measurements in absence of the sample. HBT analysis was carried out
on the Bragg peaks from the colloidal crystals measured at Linac Coherent Light
Source (LCLS). We observed high degree (80%) spatial coherence of the full beam
and the pulse duration of the monochromatized beam on the order of 11 fs that
is significantly shorter than expected from the electron bunch measurements.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures, 2 table
GRANIT project: a trap for gravitational quantum states of UCN
Previous studies of gravitationally bound states of ultracold neutrons showed
the quantization of energy levels, and confirmed quantum mechanical predictions
for the average size of the two lowest energy states wave functions.
Improvements in position-like measurements can increase the accuracy by an
order of magnitude only. We therefore develop another approach, consisting in
accurate measurements of the energy levels. The GRANIT experiment is devoted to
the study of resonant transitions between quantum states induced by an
oscillating perturbation.
According to Heisenberg's uncertainty relations, the accuracy of measurement
of the energy levels is limited by the time available to perform the
transitions. Thus, trapping quantum states will be necessary, and each source
of losses has to be controlled in order to maximize the lifetime of the states.
We discuss the general principles of transitions between quantum states, and
consider the main systematical losses of neutrons in a trap.Comment: presented in ISINN 15 seminar, Dubn
Improving the efficiency of sport and health-improving activity of the Siberian Federal University
Decrease in level of physical health of students is a serious problem of modern society. According to experts it occurs because of a lack of physical activity and low motivation of young people to regular exercises and sports. At the Siberian federal university this problem solve by carrying out the annual competition "Healthy lifestyle"Снижение уровня физического здоровья студентов является серьезной проблемой современного общества.
Properties of Neutral Charmed Mesons in Proton--Nucleus Interactions at 70 GeV
The results of treatment of data obtained in the SERP-E-184experiment
"Investigation of mechanisms of the production of charmed particles in
proton-nucleus interactions at 70 GeV and their decays" by irradiating the
active target of the SVD-2 facility consisting of carbon, silicon, and lead
plates, are presented. After separating a signal from the two-particle decay of
neutral charmed mesons and estimating the cross section for charm production at
a threshold energy {\sigma}(c\v{c})=7.1 \pm 2.4(stat.) \pm 1.4(syst.)
\mub/nucleon, some properties of D mesons are investigated. These include the
dependence of the cross section on the target mass number (its A dependence);
the behavior of the differential cross sections d{\sigma}/dpt2 and
d{\sigma}/dxF; and the dependence of the parameter {\alpha} on the kinematical
variables xF, pt2, and plab. The experimental results in question are compared
with predictions obtained on the basis of the FRITIOF7.02 code.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures,3 table
Studies of the Response of the Prototype CMS Hadron Calorimeter, Including Magnetic Field Effects, to Pion, Electron, and Muon Beams
We report on the response of a prototype CMS hadron calorimeter module to
charged particle beams of pions, muons, and electrons with momenta up to 375
GeV/c. The data were taken at the H2 and H4 beamlines at CERN in 1995 and 1996.
The prototype sampling calorimeter used copper absorber plates and scintillator
tiles with wavelength shifting fibers for readout. The effects of a magnetic
field of up to 3 Tesla on the response of the calorimeter to muons, electrons,
and pions are presented, and the effects of an upstream lead tungstate crystal
electromagnetic calorimeter on the linearity and energy resolution of the
combined calorimetric system to hadrons are evaluated. The results are compared
with Monte Carlo simulations and are used to optimize the choice of total
absorber depth, sampling frequency, and longitudinal readout segmentation.Comment: 89 pages, 41 figures, to be published in NIM, corresponding author: P
