    Visual Perception as Patterning: Cavendish against Hobbes on Sensation

    Many of Margaret Cavendish’s criticisms of Thomas Hobbes in the Philosophical Letters (1664) relate to the disorder and damage that she holds would result if Hobbesian pressure were the cause of visual perception. In this paper, I argue that her “two men” thought experiment in Letter IV is aimed at a different goal: to show the explanatory potency of her account. First, I connect Cavendish’s view of visual perception as “patterning” to the “two men” thought experiment in Letter IV. Second, I provide a potential reply on Hobbes’s behalf that appeals to physiological differences between perceivers’ sense organs, drawing upon Hobbes’s optics in De homine. Third, I argue that such a reply would misunderstand Cavendish’s objective of showing the limited explanatory resources available in understanding visual perception as pressing when compared to her view of visual perception as patterning

    Tetragonal states from epitaxial strain on metal films

    The tetragonal states produced by isotropic pseudomorphic epitaxial strain in the (001) plane on a tetragonal phase of a crystal are calculated for V, Ti, Rb, Li, K, Sr from first-principles electronic theory. It is shown that each metal has two tetragonal phases corresponding to minima of the total energy with respect to tetragonal deformations, hence are equilibrium phases, and that the equilibrium phases are separated by a region of inherent instability. The equilibrium phase for any strained tetragonal state can thus be uniquely identified. Lattice constants and relative energies of the two phases and the saddle point between them are tabulated, as well as the tetragonal elastic constants of each phase.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, appeared in Phys.     Effects of truncation in modal representations of thermal convection

    The Galerkin (including single-mode and Lorenz) equations were examined for convection in a sphere to determine which physical processes are neglected when the equations of motion are truncated too severely. The conclusions were tested by calculating solutions to the equations of motion for different values of the Rayleigh number and for different values of the limit of the horizontal spatial resolution. It was shown that the transitions from steady state to periodic, then to aperiodic convection depend not only on the Rayleigh number but also very strongly on the horizontal resolution. One of the effects of truncation is to enhance the high wavenumber end of the kinetic energy and thermal variance spectra. The numerical examples indicate that as long as the kinetic energy spectrum decreases with wavenumber, a truncation gives a qualitatively correct solution

    This study evaluates the initial effect Washington D.C.\u27s Opportunity Scholarship Program (OPS) on the academic performance of public schools and its effects on the opportunities District students have to attend integrated schools. OPS is a federally sponsored school voucher program that provides vouchers worth up to $7,500 for an estimated 1,800 to 2,000 students in the District of Columbia. Students can use the scholarships to pay tuition at participating private schools in the District. The pilot program is designed to last for 5 years

    Laser extensometer

    A drift compensated and intensity averaged extensometer for measuring the diameter or other properties of a substantially cylindrical sample based upon the shadow of the sample is described. A beam of laser light is shaped to provide a beam with a uniform intensity along an axis normal to the sample. After passing the sample, the portion of the beam not striking said sample is divided by a beam splitter into a reference signal and a measurement signal. Both of these beams are then chopped by a light chopper to fall upon two photodiode detectors. The resulting ac currents are rectified and then divided into one another, with the final output being proportional to the size of the sample shadow

    Mapping expert perspectives of the aviation sector

    Aviation globally is characterised by significant change and consequently the future of the sector has always been difficult to predict. This study adopts a systemic approach based on findings from exploratory interviews with UK aviation academics to: determine the roles of stakeholders in the air transport system; report the current issues facing the sector; explore how these issues interact and impact on the stakeholders in the system; and speculate on the future implications. Six core stakeholders are identified: airlines, airports, consumers, manufacturers, governing institutions and interest groups. Nine core issues are reported, namely: local environment, climate change, peak oil, the state of the economy, social norms, demographics, disruptive events, national (or international) regulations and capacity. A matrix of interactions and their impacts and implications for managing the aviation system is then presented
