    Measuring gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background using cross correlation with large scale structure

    We cross correlate the gravitational lensing map extracted from cosmic microwave background measurements by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) with the radio galaxy distribution from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) by using a quadratic estimator technique. We use the full covariance matrix to filter the data, and calculate the cross-power spectra for the lensing-galaxy correlation. We explore the impact of changing the values of cosmological parameters on the lensing reconstruction, and obtain statistical detection significances at >3σ>3\sigma. The results of all cross correlations pass the curl null test as well as a complementary diagnostic test using the NVSS data in equatorial coordinates. We forecast the potential for Planck and NVSS to constrain the lensing-galaxy cross correlation as well as the galaxy bias. The lensing-galaxy cross-power spectra are found to be Gaussian distributed.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure

    Enhancement in the Selectivity and Sensitivity of Ni and Pd Functionalized MoS2 Toxic Gas Sensors

    Atmospheric pollution is one of the major aspects of concern which led to the research of sensors for the detection of toxic gases. The supreme surface-to-volume ratio makes two-dimensional MoS2 a promising material to be used as an electronic sensor. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of a high-performance gas sensor based on atomic-layered MoS2 nanoflakes synthesized by a facile hydrothermal process. Structural and morphological studies confirmed the formation of few-layered phase pure hexagonal MoS2 nanoflakes. The results demonstrate that the Pd-MoS2 layers exhibited a very high relative response to NO gas (700%) at 2 ppm concentration with a minimum NO detection limit of 0.1 ppm and Ni-MoS2 demonstrated a relative response of 80% towards H2S gas with a limit of detection of 0.3 ppm with good repeatability and selectivity, owing to the increased adsorption energy of NO on Pd-MoS2 and H2S on Ni-MoS2 through the formation of PdNOx and NiS2 complexes respectively. The improved sensing performance of this MoS2-based sensor also suggests the great potential and possibility of MoS2 related 2D materials and its combinations for the development of futuristic highly sensitive nanosized gas sensors suitable for anti-pollution automotive system and as volatile biomarkers

    Electroweak Corrections using Effective Field Theory: Applications to the LHC

    Electroweak Sudakov logarithms at high energy, of the form alpha/sin^2 theta_W^n log^m s/M_{Z,W}^2, are summed using effective theory (EFT) methods. The exponentiation of Sudakov logarithms and factorization is discussed in the EFT formalism. Radiative corrections are computed to scattering processes in the standard model involving an arbitrary number of external particles. The computations include non-zero particle masses such as the t-quark mass, electroweak mixing effects which lead to unequal W and Z masses and a massless photon, and Higgs corrections proportional to the top quark Yukawa coupling. The structure of the radiative corrections, and which terms are summed by the EFT renormalization group is discussed in detail. The omitted terms are smaller than 1%. We give numerical results for the corrections to dijet production, dilepton production, t-\bar t production, and squark pair production. The purely electroweak corrections are significant -- about 15% at 1 TeV, increasing to 30% at 5 TeV, and they change both the scattering rate and angular distribution. The QCD corrections (which are well-known) are also computed with the EFT. They are much larger -- about a factor of four at 1 TeV, increasing to a factor of thirty at 5 TeV. Mass effects are also significant; the q \bar q -> t \bar t rate is enchanced relative to the light-quark production rate by 40%.Comment: Additional details added on exponentiation, and the form of the Sudakov series.     Supersymmetric Gauge Theories with an Affine Quantum Moduli Space

    All supersymmetric gauge theories based on simple groups which have an affine quantum moduli space, i.e. one generated by gauge invariants with no relations, W=0, and anomaly matching at the origin, are classified. It is shown that the only theories with no gauge invariants (and moduli space equal to a single point) are the two known examples, SU(5) with 5-bar + 10 and SO(10) with a spinor.     The HQET/NRQCD Lagrangian to order alpha/m^3

    The HQET/NRQCD Lagrangian is computed to order alpha/m^3. The computation is performed using dimensional regularization to regulate the ultraviolet and infrared divergences.
