Random walk on surfaces with hyperbolic cusps
We consider the operator associated to a random walk on finite volume
surfaces with hyperbolic cusps. We study the spectral gap (upper and lower
bound) associated to this operator and deduce some rate of convergence of the

Power System Dynamic Simulations Using a Parallel Two-Level Schur-Complement Decomposition
As the need for faster power system dynamic simulations increases, it is essential to develop new algorithms that exploit parallel computing to accelerate those simulations. This paper proposes a parallel algorithm based on a two-level, Schur-complement-based, domain decomposition method. The two-level partitioning provides high parallelization potential (coarse- and fine-grained). In addition, due to the Schur-complement approach used to update the sub-domain interface variables, the algorithm exhibits high global convergence rate. Finally, it provides significant numerical and computational acceleration. The algorithm is implemented using the shared-memory parallel programming model, targeting inexpensive multi-core machines. Its performance is reported on a real system as well as on a large test system combining transmission and distribution networks

Conceptions and expectations of research collaboration in the European social sciences: Research policies, institutional contexts and the autonomy of the scientific field
This paper investigates the interactions between policy drivers and academic practice in international research collaboration. It draws on the case of the Open Research Area (ORA), a funding scheme in the social sciences across four national research agencies, seeking to boost collaboration by supporting âintegratedâ projects. The paper discusses the schemeâs governance and its place within the European policy space before turning to awarded researchersâ perceptions of its originality and impact on their projectâs emergence and development. Drawing on Bourdieuâs field theory, we analyse the schemeâs capacity to challenge researchersâ habitual collaborative practice as well as the hierarchical foundations of the social science field. We relate the discourses of researchers, located in France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, to such structural dimensions of the academic profession as, disciplinary cultures, institutional environments and national performance management of research careers. The paper argues that the ORA introduces novel mechanisms of power sharing and answerability in social sciences research capable of unsettling the autonomy of the scientific field. This analysis offers a new perspective on the often unquestioned superiority of the model of international collaboration induced by schemes such as ORA
Nonlinear Seebeck Effect in a Model Granular Superconductor
The change of the Josephson supercurrent density of a weakly-connected
granular superconductor in response to externally applied arbitrary thermal
gradient dT/dx (nonlinear Seebeck effect) is considered within a model of 3D
Josephson junction arrays. For dT/dx>(dT/dx)_c, where (dT/dx)_c is estimated to
be of the order of 10^4 K/m for YBCO ceramics with an average grain's size of
10 microns, the weak-links-dominated thermopower S (Seebeck coefficient) is

Randomized Clinical Trial of Motivational Enhancement of Substance Use Treatment Among Incarcerated Adolescents: Post-Release Condom Non-Use
Evaluated impact of motivational enhancement (ME) of substance abuse treatment compared to relaxation training (RT) on sex without condoms (overall and involving substance use) 3 months following release among incarcerated adolescents. This randomized clinical trial involved 114 incarcerated adolescents from the Northeast. Regression analyses determined if treatment condition, baseline levels of depressive symptoms, and their interaction predicted condom non-use 3 months post-release, controlling for baseline condom non-use. Among those who reported fewer baseline depressive symptoms, those in ME condition reported significantly less condom non-use, in general and involving marijuana use compared with those in RT condition. Periods of incarceration represent opportunities to help juvenile detainees reduce behaviors that impact their health and the health of those with whom they interact in the community
Motivational interviewing to reduce substance-related consequences: Effects for incarcerated adolescents with depressed mood
Background: The impact of depressed mood on Motivational Interviewing (MI) to reduce risky behaviors and consequences in incarcerated adolescents was examined in this brief report.
Methods: Adolescents (N = 189) were randomly assigned to receive MI or Relaxation Training (RT).
Results: At 3-month follow-up assessment, MI significantly reduced risks associated with marijuana use, with a trend towards reducing risks associated with alcohol use. There was also a trend for depressive symptoms to be associated with reduced risks after release. Interaction effects were non-significant, indicating no moderating effects for depressed mood on treatment outcome.
Conclusions: MI may be a useful treatment for incarcerated adolescents in order to reduce risks and consequences associated with substance use after release
