    Analytic Calculation of Prompt Photon plus Associated Heavy Flavor at Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

    Contributions through second order, O(αs2)O(\alpha ^2_s), in perturbative quantum chromodynamics are calculated analytically for inclusive associated production of a prompt photon and a charm quark at large values of transverse momentum in high energy hadron-hadron collisions. Seven partonic subprocesses contribute at order αs2\alpha^2_s. We find important corrections to the lowest order, O(αs)O(\alpha_s), subprocess cgγcc g \rightarrow \gamma c.     Direct observation of domain-wall configurations transformed by spin currents

    Direct observations of current-induced domain-wall propagation by spin-polarized scanning electron microscopy are reported. Current pulses move head-to-head as well as tail-to-tail walls in sub-micrometer Fe_{20}Ni_{80} wires in the direction of the electron flow, and a decay of the wall velocity with the number of injected current pulses is observed. High-resolution images of the domain walls reveal that the wall spin structure is transformed from a vortex to a transverse configuration with subsequent pulse injections. The change in spin structure is directly correlated with the decay of the velocity.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Low frequency radio and X-ray properties of core-collapse supernovae

    Radio and X-ray studies of young supernovae probe the interaction between the supernova shock waves and the surrounding medium and give clues to the nature and past of the progenitor star. Here we discuss the early emission from type Ic SN 2002ap and argue that repeated Compton boosting of optical photons by hot electrons presents the most natural explanation of the prompt X-ray emission. We describe the radio spectrum of another type Ic SN 2003dh (GRB030329) obtained with combined GMRT and VLA data. We report on the low frequency radio monitoring of SN 1995N and our objectives of distinguishing between competing models of X-ray emission from this SN and the nature of its progenitor by X-ray spectroscopy.     Resistance of a domain wall in the quasiclassical approach

    Starting from a simple microscopic model, we have derived a kinetic equation for the matrix distribution function. We employed this equation to calculate the conductance GG in a mesoscopic F'/F/F' structure with a domain wall (DW). In the limit of a small exchange energy JJ and an abrupt DW, the conductance of the structure is equal to G2d=4σσ/(σ+σ)LG_{2d}=4\sigma_{\uparrow}\sigma_{\downarrow }/(\sigma_{\uparrow}+\sigma_{\downarrow})L. Assuming that the scattering times for electrons with up and down spins are close to each other we show that the account for a finite width of the DW leads to an increase in this conductance. We have also calculated the spatial distribution of the electric field in the F wire. In the opposite limit of large JJ (adiabatic variation of the magnetization in the DW) the conductance coincides in the main approximation with the conductance of a single domain structure G1d=(σ+σ)/L% G_{1d}=(\sigma_{\uparrow}+\sigma_{\downarrow})/L. The account for rotation of the magnetization in the DW leads to a negative correction to this conductance.     On a Conjecture of Rapoport and Zink

    In their book Rapoport and Zink constructed rigid analytic period spaces FwaF^{wa} for Fontaine's filtered isocrystals, and period morphisms from PEL moduli spaces of pp-divisible groups to some of these period spaces. They conjectured the existence of an \'etale bijective morphism FaFwaF^a \to F^{wa} of rigid analytic spaces and of a universal local system of QpQ_p-vector spaces on FaF^a. For Hodge-Tate weights n1n-1 and nn we construct in this article an intrinsic Berkovich open subspace F0F^0 of FwaF^{wa} and the universal local system on F0F^0. We conjecture that the rigid-analytic space associated with F0F^0 is the maximal possible FaF^a, and that F0F^0 is connected. We give evidence for these conjectures and we show that for those period spaces possessing PEL period morphisms, F0F^0 equals the image of the period morphism. Then our local system is the rational Tate module of the universal pp-divisible group and enjoys additional functoriality properties. We show that only in exceptional cases F0F^0 equals all of FwaF^{wa} and when the Shimura group is GLnGL_n we determine all these cases.Comment: v2: 48 pages; many new results added, v3: final version that will appear in Inventiones Mathematica

    Flaring Up All Over -- Radio Activity in Rapidly-Rotating Late-Type M and L Dwarfs

    We present Very Large Array observations of twelve late M and L dwarfs in the Solar neighborhood. The observed sources were chosen to cover a wide range of physical characteristics - spectral type, rotation, age, binarity, and X-ray and H\alpha activity - to determine the role of these properties in the production of radio emission, and hence magnetic fields. Three of the twelve sources, TVLM513-46546, 2MASS J0036159+182110, and BRI0021-0214, were observed to flare and also exhibit persistent emission, indicating that magnetic activity is not quenched at the bottom of the main sequence. The radio emission extends to spectral type L3.5, and there is no apparent decrease in the ratio of flaring luminosities to bolometric luminosities between M8-L3.5. Moreover, contrary to the significant drop in persistent H\alpha activity beyond spectral type M7, the persistent radio activity appears to steadily increase between M3-L3.5. Similarly, the radio emission from BRI0021-0214 violates the phenomenological relations between the radio and X-ray luminosities of coronally active stars, hinting that radio and X-ray activity are also uncorrelated at the bottom of the main sequence. The radio active sources that have measured rotational velocities are rapid rotators, Vsin(i)>30 km/sec, while the upper limits on radio activity in slowly-rotating late M dwarfs (Vsin(i)<10 km/sec) are lower than these detections. These observations provide tantalizing evidence that rapidly-rotating late M and L dwarfs are more likely to be radio active. This possible correlation is puzzling given that the observed radio emission requires sustained magnetic fields of 10-1000 G and densities of 10^12 cm^-3, indicating that the active sources should have slowed down considerably due to magnetic braking.Comment: Accepted to ApJ; Two new figures; Minor text revision

    Relativistic mean field theory with the NL3 force is used for producing potential energy surfaces (PES) for series of isotopes suggested as exhibiting critical point symmetries. Relatively flat PES are obtained for nuclei showing the E(5) symmetry, while in nuclei corresponding to the X(5) case, PES with a bump are obtained.     Femtosecond dynamics of electronic states in the Mott insulator 1T-TaS2 by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

    Photoexcitation of the Mott insulator 1T-TaS2 by an intense laser pulse leads to an ultrafast transition toward a gapless phase. Beside the collapse of the electronic gap, the sudden excitation of the charge density wave mode results into periodic oscillations of the electronic states. We employ time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to monitor the rich dynamics of electrons and phonons during the relaxation toward equilibrium. The qualitative difference between the oscillatory dynamics of the charge density wave and the monotonic recovery of the electronic gap proves that 1T-TaS2 is indeed a Mott insulator. Moreover the quasi-instantaneous build up of mid gap states is in contrast with the retarded response expected from a Peierls insulating phase. Interestingly, the photoinduced electronic states in the midgap spectral region display a weak resonance that is reminiscent of a quasiparticle peak

    Manifolds with 1/4-pinched flag curvature

    We say that a nonnegatively curved manifold (M,g)(M,g) has quarter pinched flag curvature if for any two planes which intersect in a line the ratio of their sectional curvature is bounded above by 4. We show that these manifolds have nonnegative complex sectional curvature. By combining with a theorem of Brendle and Schoen it follows that any positively curved manifold with strictly quarter pinched flag curvature must be a space form. This in turn generalizes a result of Andrews and Nguyen in dimension 4. For odd dimensional manifolds we obtain results for the case that the flag curvature is pinched with some constant below one quarter, one of which generalizes a recent work of Petersen and Tao

    Magnetoresistance, Micromagnetism, and Domain Wall Scattering in Epitaxial hcp Co Films

    Large negative magnetoresistance (MR) observed in transport measurements of hcp Co films with stripe domains were recently reported and interpreted in terms of a novel domain wall (DW) scattering mechanism. Here detailed MR measurements, magnetic force microscopy, and micromagnetic calculations are combined to elucidate the origin of MR in this material. The large negative room temperature MR reported previously is shown to be due to ferromagnetic resistivity anisotropy. Measurements of the resistivity for currents parallel (CIW) and perpendicular to DWs (CPW) have been conducted as a function of temperature. Low temperature results show that any intrinsic effect of DWs scattering on MR of this material is very small compared to the anisotropic MR.Comment: 5 pages, 5 Figures, submitted to PR
