    Relations between the SNO and the Super Kamiokande solar neutrino rates

    By comparing the neutrino spectra measured by SNO and Super Kamiokande, we obtain inequalities between the ratios of observed rate to SSM rate for the two experiments. These inequalities apply to a possibly energy-dependent reduction of the SSM flux and to the case of neutrino oscillations.     Compulsory school-based enterprise education as a gateway to an entrepreneurial career

    This article explores the direct influence of school-based enterprise education on career choices and particularly, how this might be limited as entrepreneurial intentions dissipate over time. We propose that it is the indirect influence of school-based enterprise education, through encouraging voluntary engagement with other forms of enterprise education, which is important. Drawing upon data from the United Kingdom (UK) Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) study this paper utilises a binary logistic regression approach and finds evidence to support the proposed indirect role. This shows the importance of collaboration between those delivering and designing enterprise education at all stages to ensure that young people are prepared correctly to move seamlessly between such stages

    We present results for the so-called `bar-attendance' model of market behavior: pp adaptive agents, each possessing nn prediction rules chosen randomly from a pool, attempt to attend a bar whose cut-off is ss. The global attendance time-series has a mean near, but not equal to, ss.     Directional optical switching and transistor functionality using optical parametric oscillation in a spinor polariton fluid

    Over the past decade, spontaneously emerging patterns in the density of polaritons in semiconductor microcavities were found to be a promising candidate for all-optical switching. But recent approaches were mostly restricted to scalar fields, did not benefit from the polariton's unique spin-dependent properties, and utilized switching based on hexagon far-field patterns with 60{\deg} beam switching (i.e. in the far field the beam propagation direction is switched by 60{\deg}). Since hexagon far-field patterns are challenging, we present here an approach for a linearly polarized spinor field, that allows for a transistor-like (e.g., crucial for cascadability) orthogonal beam switching, i.e. in the far field the beam is switched by 90{\deg}. We show that switching specifications such as amplification and speed can be adjusted using only optical means

    Performance and Fundamental Processes at Low Energy in a Two-Phase Liquid Xenon Dark Matter Detector

    We extend the study of the performance of a prototype two-phase liquid xenon WIMP dark matter detector to recoil energies below 20 keV. We demonstrate a new method for obtaining the best estimate of the energies of events using a calibrated sum of charge and light signals and introduce the corresponding discrimination parameter, giving its mean value at 4 kV/cm for electron and nuclear recoils up to 300 and 100 keV, respectively. We show that fluctuations in recombination limit discrimination for most energies, and reveal an improvement in discrimination below 20 keV due to a surprising increase in ionization yield for low energy electron recoils.
