Transport and diffusion in the embedding map
We study the transport properties of passive inertial particles in a
incompressible flows. Here the particle dynamics is represented by the
dissipative embedding map of area-preserving standard map which models
the incompressible flow. The system is a model for impurity dynamics in a fluid
and is characterized by two parameters, the inertia parameter , and the
dissipation parameter . We obtain the statistical characterisers of
transport for this system in these dynamical regimes. These are, the recurrence
time statistics, the diffusion constant, and the distribution of jump lengths.
The recurrence time distribution shows a power law tail in the dynamical
regimes where there is preferential concentration of particles in sticky
regions of the phase space, and an exponential decay in mixing regimes. The
diffusion constant shows behaviour of three types - normal, subdiffusive and
superdiffusive, depending on the parameter regimes. Phase diagrams of the
system are constructed to differentiate different types of diffusion behaviour,
as well as the behaviour of the absolute drift. We correlate the dynamical
regimes seen for the system at different parameter values with the transport
properties observed at these regimes, and in the behaviour of the transients.
This system also shows the existence of a crisis and unstable dimension
variability at certain parameter values. The signature of the unstable
dimension variability is seen in the statistical characterisers of transport.

Optical Turbulence Measurements and Models for Mount John University Observatory
Site measurements were collected at Mount John University Observatory in 2005
and 2007 using a purpose-built scintillation detection and ranging system.
profiling indicates a weak layer located at 12 - 14 km above sea
level and strong low altitude turbulence extending up to 5 km. During calm
weather conditions, an additional layer was detected at 6 - 8 km above sea
level. profiling suggests that tropopause layer velocities are nominally
12 - 30 m/s, and near-ground velocities range between 2 -- 20 m/s, dependent on
weather. Little seasonal variation was detected in either and
profiles. The average coherence length, , was found to be cm for
the full profile at a wavelength of 589 nm. The average isoplanatic angle,
, was arcsec. The mean turbulence altitude,
, was found to be km above sea level. No average in the
Greenwood frequency, , could be established due to the gaps present in the
\vw\s profiles obtained. A modified Hufnagel-Valley model was developed to
describe the profiles at Mount John, which estimates at 6 cm
and at 0.9 arcsec. A series of models were developed, based
on the Greenwood wind model with an additional peak located at low altitudes.
Using the model and the suggested model for moderate ground
wind speeds, is estimated at 79 Hz.Comment: 14 pages; accepted for publication in PAS
Stochastic Energetics of Quantum Transport
We examine the stochastic energetics of directed quantum transport due to
rectification of non-equilibrium thermal fluctuations. We calculate the quantum
efficiency of a ratchet device both in presence and absence of an external load
to characterize two quantifiers of efficiency. It has been shown that the
quantum current as well as efficiency in absence of load (Stokes efficiency) is
higher as compared to classical current and efficiency, respectively, at low
temperature. The conventional efficiency of the device in presence of load on
the other hand is higher for a classical system in contrast to its classical
counterpart. The maximum conventional efficiency being independent of the
nature of the bath and the potential remains the same for classical and quantum

Observable Optimal State Points of Sub-additive Potentials
For a sequence of sub-additive potentials, Dai [Optimal state points of the
sub-additive ergodic theorem, Nonlinearity, 24 (2011), 1565-1573] gave a method
of choosing state points with negative growth rates for an ergodic dynamical
system. This paper generalizes Dai's result to the non-ergodic case, and proves
that under some mild additional hypothesis, one can choose points with negative
growth rates from a positive Lebesgue measure set, even if the system does not
preserve any measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue

Excitonic effects on the two-color coherent control of interband transitions in bulk semiconductors
Quantum interference between one- and two-photon absorption pathways allows
coherent control of interband transitions in unbiased bulk semiconductors;
carrier population, carrier spin polarization, photocurrent injection, and spin
current injection may all be controlled. We extend the theory of these
processes to include the electron-hole interaction. Our focus is on photon
energies that excite carriers above the band edge, but close enough to it so
that transition amplitudes based on low order expansions in are
applicable; both allowed-allowed and allowed-forbidden two-photon transition
amplitudes are included. Analytic solutions are obtained using the effective
mass theory of Wannier excitons; degenerate bands are accounted for, but
envelope-hole coupling is neglected. We find a Coulomb enhancement of two-color
coherent control process, and relate it to the Coulomb enhancements of one- and
two-photon absorption. In addition, we find a frequency dependent phase shift
in the dependence of photocurrent and spin current on the optical phases. The
phase shift decreases monotonically from at the band edge to 0 over an
energy range governed by the exciton binding energy. It is the difference
between the partial wave phase shifts of the electron-hole envelope function

Work-Unit Absenteeism: Effects of Satisfaction, Commitment, Labor Market Conditions, and Time
Prior research is limited in explaining absenteeism at the unit level and over time. We developed and tested a model of unit-level absenteeism using five waves of data collected over six years from 115 work units in a large state agency. Unit-level job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and local unemployment were modeled as time-varying predictors of absenteeism. Shared satisfaction and commitment interacted in predicting absenteeism but were not related to the rate of change in absenteeism over time. Unit-level satisfaction and commitment were more strongly related to absenteeism when units were located in areas with plentiful job alternatives
Two-dimensional electron transport in the presence of magnetic flux vortices
We have considered the conductivity properties of a two dimensional electron
gas (2DEG) in two different kinds of inhomogeneous magnetic fields, i.e. a
disordered distribution of magnetic flux vortices, and a periodic array of
magnetic flux vortices. The work falls in two parts. In the first part we show
how the phase shifts for an electron scattering on an isolated vortex, can be
calculated analytically, and related to the transport properties through a
force balance equation. In the second part we present numerical results for the
Hall conductivity of the 2DEG in a periodic array of flux vortices. We find
characteristic peaks in the Hall conductance, when plotted against the filling
fraction. It is argued that the peaks can be interpreted in terms of
``topological charge'' piling up across local and global gaps in the energy

Large deviations for non-uniformly expanding maps
We obtain large deviation results for non-uniformly expanding maps with
non-flat singularities or criticalities and for partially hyperbolic
non-uniformly expanding attracting sets. That is, given a continuous function
we consider its space average with respect to a physical measure and compare
this with the time averages along orbits of the map, showing that the Lebesgue
measure of the set of points whose time averages stay away from the space
average decays to zero exponentially fast with the number of iterates involved.
As easy by-products we deduce escape rates from subsets of the basins of
physical measures for these types of maps. The rates of decay are naturally
related to the metric entropy and pressure function of the system with respect
to a family of equilibrium states. The corrections added to the published

How old is the Tasmanian cultural landscape? a test of landscape openness using quantitative land-cover reconstructions
Aim: To test competing hypotheses about the timing and extent of Holocene landscape opening using pollen-based quantitative land-cover estimates. Location: Dove Lake, Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, Australia. Methods: Fossil pollen data were incorporated into pollen dispersal models and corrected for differences in pollen productivity among key plant taxa. Mechanistic models (REVEALS-Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites) employing different models for pollen dispersal (Gaussian plume and Lagrangian stochastic models) were evaluated and applied in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time. Results: Validation of the REVEALS model with vegetation cover data suggests an overall better performance of the Lagrangian stochastic model. Regional land-cover estimates for forest and non-forest plant taxa show persistent landscape openness throughout the Holocene (average landscape openness similar to 50%). Gymnoschoenus sphaerocephalus, an indicator of moorland vegetation, shows higher values during the early Holocene (11.7-9 ka) and declines slightly through the mid-Holocene (9-4.5 ka) during a phase of partial landscape afforestation. Rain forest cover reduced (from similar to 40% to similar to 20%) during the period between 4.2-3.5 ka. Main conclusions: Pollen percentages severely under-represent landscape openness in western Tasmania and this bias has fostered an over-estimation of Holocene forest cover from pollen data. Treeless vegetation dominated Holocene landscapes of the Dove Lake area, allowing us to reject models of landscape evolution that invoke late-Holocene replacement of a rain forest-dominated landscape by moorland. Instead, we confirm a model of Late Pleistocene inheritance of open vegetation. Choosing Whether to Lead, Lag, or Match the Market
This paper demonstrates how cost-benefit analysis can be used to develop a company\u27s pay strategy. Using the case of Punk\u27s Backyard Grill, a new venture starting in the Washington, DC area, quantitative aspects of Utility Analysis are combined with the judgments of the company\u27s owners to provide estimates of the value associated with seven pay strategies. Results showed that leading the market by 5% produced the greatest return. Sensitivity analysis is used to see how drastically estimates changes owing to the nature of the paper\u27s estimates. This methods presented in this paper should help others making pay policy decisions use cost-benefit analysis as part of their decision process
