Comment on "Finite Size Corrections to the Radiation Reaction Force in Classical Electrodynamics" [arXiv:1005.2617]
In [1, arXiv:1005.2617] effective field theory methods have been employed to
compute the equations of motion of a spherically symmetric charged shell of
radius R, taking into account the radiation reaction force exerted by the
shell's own electromagnetic field up to O(R^2). The authors of Ref. [1] have
stated that the known result for the self force of the shell as can be found
from Eq. (16.28) of the textbook of Jackson [2] (see also Chap. 4 in the review
of Pearle [3]) is incorrect, in that the term linear in R should be absent. We
claim that this conclusion of Ref. [1] is incorrect, and that the textbook
result, Eq. (1) does hold.Comment: 1 pag
Satellite Relay Telemetry of Seismic Data in Earthquake Prediction and Control
The Satellite Telemetry Earthquake Monitoring Program was started to evaluate the applicability of satellite relay telemetry in the collection of seismic data from a large number of dense seismograph clusters laid out along the major fault systems of western North America. Prototype clusters utilizing phone-line telemetry were then being installed by the National Center for Earthquake Research in 3 regions along the San Andreas fault in central California; and the experience of installing and operating the clusters and in reducing and analyzing the seismic data from them was to provide the raw materials for evaluation in the satellite relay telemetry project. The principal advantages of the satellite relay system over commercial telephone or microwave systems were: (1) it could be made less prone to massive failure during a major earthquake; (2) it could be extended readily into undeveloped regions; and (3) it could provide flexible, uniform communications over large sections of major global tectonic zones. Simulation of colloidal chain movements under a magnetic field
Short colloidal chains are simulated by the slithering-snake-algorithm on a
simple cubic lattice. The dipole character of the colloidal particles leads to
a long range dipole-dipole interaction. The solvent is simulated by the nearest
neighbor Ising model. The aligning of the dipoles under a magnetic field gives

The interpretive approach to religious education : challenging Thompson's interpretation
In a recent book chapter, Matthew Thompson makes some criticisms of my work, including the interpretive approach to religious education and the research and activity of Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit. Against the background of a discussion of religious education in the public sphere, my response challenges Thompson’s account, commenting on his own position in relation to dialogical approaches to religious education. The article rehearses my long held view that the ideal form of religious education in fully state funded schools of a liberal democracy should be ‘secular’ but not ‘secularist’; there should be no implication of an axiomatic secular humanist interpretation of religions
Orbiter/launch system
The system includes reusable turbojet propelled booster vehicles releasably connected to a reusable rocket powered orbit vehicle. The coupled orbiter-booster combination takes off horizontally and ascends to staging altitude and speed under booster power with both orbiter and booster wings providing lift. After staging, the booster vehicles fly back to Earth for horizontal landing and the orbiter vehicle continues ascending to orbit

Adjusting the tasseled cap brightness and greenness factors for atmospheric path radiance and absorption on a pixel by pixel basis
A radiative transfer model was used to convert ground measured reflectances into the radiance at the top of the atmosphere, for several levels of atmospheric path radiance. The radiance in MSS7 (0.8 to 1.1 m) was multiplied by the transmission fraction for atmospheres having different levels of precipitable water. The radiance values were converted to simulated LANDSAT digital counts for four path radiance levels and four levels of precipitable water. These values were used to calculate the Kauth-Thomas brightness, greenness, yellowness, and nonsuch factors. Brightness was affected by surface conditions and path radiance. Greenness was affected by surface conditions, path radiance, and precipitable water. Yellowness was affected by path radiance and nonsuch by precipitable water, and both factors changed only slightly with surface conditions. Yellowness and nonsuch were used to adjust brightness and greenness to produce factors that were affected only by surface conditions such as soils and vegetation, and not by path radiance and precipitable water
Discrimination of growth and water stress in wheat by various vegetation indices through a clear a turbid atmosphere
Reflectance data were obtained over a drought-stressed and a well-watered wheat plot with a hand-held radiometer having bands similar to the MSS bands of the LANDSAT satellites. Data for 48 clear days were interpolated to yield reflectance values for each day of the growing season, from planting until harvest. With an atmospheric path radiance model and LANDSAT-2 calibration data, the reflectance were used to simulate LANDSAT digital counts (not quantized) for the four LANDSAT bands for each day of the growing season, through a clear (approximately 100 km meteorological range) and a turbid (approximately 10 km meteorological range) atmosphere. Several ratios and linear combinations of bands were calculated using the simulated data, then assessed for their relative ability to discriminate vegetative growth and plant stress through the two atmospheres. The results show that water stress was not detected by any of the indices until after growth was retarded, and the sensitivity of the various indices to vegetation depended on plant growth stage and atmospheric path radiance
Explicit Actions for Electromagnetism with Two Gauge Fields with Only one Electric and one Magnetic Physical Fields
We extend the work of Mello et al. based in Cabbibo and Ferrari concerning
the description of electromagnetism with two gauge fields from a variational
principle, i.e. an action. We provide a systematic independent derivation of
the allowed actions which have only one magnetic and one electric physical
fields and are invariant under the discrete symmetries and . We conclude
that neither the Lagrangian, nor the Hamiltonian, are invariant under the
electromagnetic duality rotations. This agrees with the weak-strong coupling
mixing characteristic of the duality due to the Dirac quantization condition
providing a natural way to differentiate dual theories related by the duality
rotations (the energy is not invariant). Also the standard electromagnetic
duality rotations considered in this work violate both and by inducing
Hopf terms (theta terms) for each sector and a mixed Maxwell term. The
canonical structure of the theory is briefly addressed and the 'magnetic' gauge
