A computer vision approach to classification of birds in flight from video sequences
Bird populations are an important bio-indicator; so collecting reliable data is useful for ecologists helping conserve and manage fragile ecosystems. However, existing manual monitoring methods are labour-intensive, time-consuming, and error-prone. The aim of our work is to develop a reliable system, capable of automatically classifying individual bird species in flight from videos. This is challenging, but appropriate for use in the field, since there is often a requirement to identify in flight, rather than when stationary. We present our work in progress, which uses combined appearance and motion features to classify and present experimental results across seven species using Normal Bayes classifier with majority voting and achieving a classification rate of 86%
Sources of Unreliable Testimony from Children
We distilled research findings on sources of unreliable testimony from children into four principles that capture how the field of forensic developmental psychology conceptualizes this topic. The studies selected to illustrate these principles address three major questions: (a) how do young children perform in eyewitness studies, (b) why are some children less accurate than others, and (c) what phenomena generate unreliable testimony? Throughout our research, our focus is on factors other than lying that produce inaccurate or seemingly inconsistent autobiographical reports.Collectively, this research has shown that (a) children’s eyewitness accuracy is highly dependent on context, (b) neurological immaturity makes children vulnerable to errors under some circumstances, and (c) some children are more swayed by external influences than others. Finally, the diversity of factors that can influence the reliability of children’s testimony dictates that (d) analyzing children’s testimony as if they were adults (i.e., with adult abilities, sensibilities, and motivations) will lead to frequent misunderstandings. It takes considerable knowledge of development—including information about developmental psycholinguistics, memory development, and the gradual emergence of cognitive control—to work with child witnesses and to analyze cases as there are many sources of unreliable testimony
Towards a standardised line list for G191-B2B, and other DA type objects
We present a comprehensive analysis of the far UV spectrum of G191-B2B over
the range of 900-1700{\AA} using co-added data from the FUSE and STIS archives.
While previous identifications made by Holberg et al. (2003) are reaffirmed in
this work, it is found that many previously unidentified lines can now be
attributed to Fe, Ni, and a few lighter metals. Future work includes extending
this detailed analysis to a wider range of DA objects, in the expectation that

Deep Halpha imagery of the Eridanus shells
A deep \ha image of interlocking filamentary arcs of nebulosity has been
obtained with a wide-field ( 30\degree diameter) narrow-band filter
camera combined with a CCD as a detector. The resultant mosaic of images,
extending to a galactic latitude of 65, has been corrected for field
distortions and had galactic coordinates superimposed on it to permit accurate
correlations with the most recent H{\sc i} (21 cm), X-ray (0.75 kev) and FIR
(IRAS 100 m) maps.
Furthermore, an upper limit of 0.13 arcsec/yr to the expansion proper motion
of the primary 25\degree long nebulous arc has been obtained by comparing a
recent \ha image obtained with the San Pedro Martir telescope of its
filamentary edge with that on a POSS E plate obtained in 1951.
It is concluded that these filamentary arcs are the superimposed images of
separate shells (driven by supernova explosions and/or stellar winds) rather
than the edges of a single `superbubble' stretching from Barnard's Arc (and the
Orion Nebula) to these high galactic latitudes. The proper motion measurement
argues against the primary \ha emitting arc being associated with the giant
radio loop (Loop 2) except in extraordinary circumstances.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for MNRAS publicatio
Dorsalization of the neural tube by the non-neural ectoderm
The patterning of cell types along the dorsoventral axis of the spinal cord requires a complex set of inductive signals. While the chordamesoderm is a well-known source of ventralizing signals, relatively little is known about the cues that induce dorsal cell types, including neural crest. Here, we demonstrate that juxtaposition of the non-neural and neural ectoderm is sufficient to induce the expression of dorsal markers, Wnt-1, Wnt-3a and Slug, as well as the formation of neural crest cells. In addition, the competence of neural plate to express Wnt-1 and Wnt-3a appears to be stage dependent, occurring only when neural tissue is taken from stage 8–10 embryos but not from stage 4 embryos, regardless of the age of the non-neural ectoderm. In contrast to the induction of Wnt gene expression, neural crest cell formation and Slug expression can be induced when either stage 4 or stage 8–10 neural plates are placed in contact with the non-neural ectoderm. These data suggest that the non-neural ectoderm provides a signal (or signals) that specifies dorsal cell types within the neural tube, and that the response is dependent on the competence of the neural tissue
Tribostimulated Emission of Electrons and Neutral Particles from Anodized Aluminum
The physical and chefmical properties of anodic oxide layers on metals such as Al play important roles in a number of applications such as adhesive bonding and corrosion resistance. An overall test of an oxide layer sensitive to a number of oxide properties is difficult to find. We have been studying the tribostimulated emission of charged particles, neutral particles, and photons during tensile deformafion of anodically oxidized Al alloys. The characteristic emission curve (emission rate vs. strain of the Al substrate during constant strain rate) is found to depend strongly on the anodization parameters. A comparison of neutral particle emission with electron emission will be presented. Correlations between acoustic emission from oxide cracking and electron emission will also be discussed
Transition state theory and the dynamics of hard disks
The dynamics of two and five disk systems confined in a square has been
studied using molecular dynamics simulations and compared with the predictions
of transition state theory. We determine the partition functions Z and
Z^\ddagger of transition state theory using a procedure first used by Salsburg
and Wood for the pressure. Our simulations show this procedure and transition
state theory are in excellent agreement with the simulations. A generalization
of the transition state theory to the case of a large number of disks N is made
and shown to be in full agreement with simulations of disks moving in a narrow
channel. The same procedure for hard spheres in three dimensions leads to the
Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann formula for their alpha relaxation time.Comment: 1 new author, new simulations and figures, less speculation. Now 6

Paper Session I-A - Launch Site Integration of Liquid Rocket Boosters
The impacts of introducing Liquid Rocket Boosters (LRB) into the STS/KSC launch environment are identified and evaluated. Proposed ground systems configurations are presented along with a launch site requirements summary. Pre-launch processing scenarios are described and the required facility modifications and new facility requirements are analyzed. Flight vehicle design recommendations to enhance launch processing are discussed. Processing approaches to integrate LRB with existing STS launch operations are evaluated. The key features and significance of launch site transition to a new STS configuration in parallel with on-going launch activities are enumerated
