Heteroduplex analysis of the RNA of clone 3 Moloney murine sarcoma virus
Heteroduplex analysis of the RNA isolated from purified virions of clone 3 Moloney murine sarcoma virus (M-MSV) hybridized to cDNA's from Moloney murine leukemia virus (M-MLV) and clone 124 M-MSV shows that the main physical component of clone 3 RNA is missing all or most of the 1.5-kilobase (kb) clone 124 M-MSV specific sequence denoted beta s (S. Hu et al. Cell 10:469-477, 1977). This sequence is either deleted in clone 3 RNA or substituted by a very short (0.3-kilobase) sequence. In other respects, clone 3 and clone 124 RNAs show the same heteroduplex structure relative to M-MLV. Since beta s is believed to contain the src gene(s) of clone 124 RNA, this result leaves as an unresolved question the nature of the src gene(s) of the clone 3 M-MSV RNA complex
Hot Spots on the Fermi Surface of Bi2212: Stripes versus Superstructure
In a recent paper Saini et al. have reported evidence for a pseudogap around
(pi,0) at room temperature in the optimally doped superconductor Bi2212. This
result is in contradiction with previous ARPES measurements. Furthermore they
observed at certain points on the Fermi surface hot spots of high spectral
intensity which they relate to the existence of stripes in the CuO planes. They
also claim to have identified a new electronic band along Gamma-M1 whose one
dimensional character provides further evidence for stripes. We demonstrate in
this Comment that all the measured features can be simply understood by
correctly considering the superstructure (umklapp) and shadow bands which occur

The application of cast SiC/Al to rotary engine components
A silicon carbide reinforced aluminum (SiC/Al) material fabricated by Dural Aluminum Composites Corporation was tested for various components of rotary engines. Properties investigated included hardness, high temperature strength, wear resistance, fatigue resistance, thermal conductivity, and expansion. SiC/Al appears to be a viable candidate for cast rotors, and may be applicable to other components, primarily housings
Double dispersion of the magnetic resonant mode in cuprates
The magnetic excitation spectra in the vicinity of the resonant peak, as
observed by inelastic neutron scattering in cuprates, are studied within the
memory-function approach. It is shown that at intermediate doping the
superconducting gap induces a double dispersion of the peak, with an anisotropy
rotated between the downward and upward branch. Similar behavior, but with a
spin-wave dispersion at higher energies, is obtained for the low-doping case
assuming a large pairing pseudogap.Comment: 4 LaTeX pages, 4 figure
Water resource problems of energy projects in the Colorado River Basin
The successful development of western coal and oil shale deposits
is dependent, to a significant degree, on the availability of adequate
water supplies. EQL is involved in a study of the aggregate effects
of various energy activities in the upper Colorado River Basin on
downstream water quantity and quality. These activities will tend
to reduce the available water in the river, and could increase its
salinity, which is already so high as to interfere with downstream
domestic and agricultural use
The Eurovision St Andrews collection of photographs
This report describes the Eurovision image collection compiled for the ImageCLEF (Cross Language Evaluation Forum) evaluation exercise. The image collection consists of around 30,000 photographs from the collection provided by the University of St Andrews Library. The construction and composition of this unique image collection are described, together with the necessary information to obtain and use the image collection
Measurement of spin memory lengths in PdNi and PdFe ferromagnetic alloys
Weakly ferromagnetic alloys are being used by several groups in the study of
superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrid systems. Because spin-flip and spin-orbit
scattering in such alloys disrupt the penetration of pair correlations into the
ferromagnetic material, it is desirable to have a direct measurement of the
spin memory length in such alloys. We have measured the spin memory length at
4.2 K in sputtered Pd0.88Ni0.12 and Pd0.987Fe0.013 alloys using methods based
on current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance. The alloys are
incorporated into hybrid spin valves of various types, and the spin memory
length is determined by fits of the Valet-Fert spin-transport equations to data
of magnetoresistance vs. alloy thickness. For the case of PdNi alloy, the
resulting values of the spin memory length are lsf(PdNi) = 2.8 +/- 0.5 nm and
5.4 +/- 0.6 nm, depending on whether or not the PdNi is exchange biased by an
adjacent Permalloy layer. For PdFe, the spin memory length is somewhat longer,
lsf(PdFe) = 9.6 +/- 2 nm, consistent with earlier measurements indicating lower
spin-orbit scattering in that material. Unfortunately, even the longer spin
memory length in PdFe may not be long enough to facilitate observation of
spin-triplet superconducting correlations predicted to occur in
superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrid systems in the presence of magnetic
inhomogeneity.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Manipulating Current-Induced Magnetization Switching
We summarize our recent findings on how current-driven magnetization
switching and magnetoresistance in nanofabricated magnetic multilayers are
affected by varying the spin-scattering properties of the non-magnetic spacers,
the relative orientations of the magnetic layers, and spin-dependent scattering
properties of the interfaces and the bulk of the magnetic layers. We show how
our data are explained in terms of current-dependent effective magnetic
