Streaming Kernelization
Kernelization is a formalization of preprocessing for combinatorially hard
problems. We modify the standard definition for kernelization, which allows any
polynomial-time algorithm for the preprocessing, by requiring instead that the
preprocessing runs in a streaming setting and uses
bits of memory on instances . We obtain
several results in this new setting, depending on the number of passes over the
input that such a streaming kernelization is allowed to make. Edge Dominating
Set turns out as an interesting example because it has no single-pass
kernelization but two passes over the input suffice to match the bounds of the
best standard kernelization
Polynomial Kernels for Weighted Problems
Kernelization is a formalization of efficient preprocessing for NP-hard
problems using the framework of parameterized complexity. Among open problems
in kernelization it has been asked many times whether there are deterministic
polynomial kernelizations for Subset Sum and Knapsack when parameterized by the
number of items.
We answer both questions affirmatively by using an algorithm for compressing
numbers due to Frank and Tardos (Combinatorica 1987). This result had been
first used by Marx and V\'egh (ICALP 2013) in the context of kernelization. We
further illustrate its applicability by giving polynomial kernels also for
weighted versions of several well-studied parameterized problems. Furthermore,
when parameterized by the different item sizes we obtain a polynomial
kernelization for Subset Sum and an exponential kernelization for Knapsack.
Finally, we also obtain kernelization results for polynomial integer programs
Annotated Bibliography of Fire Literature Relative to Northern Grasslands in South-Central Canada and North-Central United States
This publication provides a condensed reference of fire literature for those with an interest in fire ecology
Annotated Bibliography of Fire Literature
Natural resource managers have greatly increased the use of fire to manage grassland habitats during the past two decades in the northern Great Plains region of the United States and Canada. In support of these efforts, we have compiled this annotated bibliography to provide a condensed reference of fire literature for those managers with an interest in fire ecology. References are arranged alphabetically by author and year, numbered consecutively, and referenced by number in the author and subject indexes that follow the bibliography. The intent in compiling the bibliography and indexes is more to identify subject matter and to direct the reader to sources rather than to provide a digested interpretation of each manuscript
Polynomial kernels for 3-leaf power graph modification problems
A graph G=(V,E) is a 3-leaf power iff there exists a tree T whose leaves are
V and such that (u,v) is an edge iff u and v are at distance at most 3 in T.
The 3-leaf power graph edge modification problems, i.e. edition (also known as
the closest 3-leaf power), completion and edge-deletion, are FTP when
parameterized by the size of the edge set modification. However polynomial
kernel was known for none of these three problems. For each of them, we provide
cubic kernels that can be computed in linear time for each of these problems.
We thereby answer an open problem first mentioned by Dom, Guo, Huffner and
Niedermeier (2005).Comment: Submitte
Fast branching algorithm for Cluster Vertex Deletion
In the family of clustering problems, we are given a set of objects (vertices
of the graph), together with some observed pairwise similarities (edges). The
goal is to identify clusters of similar objects by slightly modifying the graph
to obtain a cluster graph (disjoint union of cliques). Hueffner et al. [Theory
Comput. Syst. 2010] initiated the parameterized study of Cluster Vertex
Deletion, where the allowed modification is vertex deletion, and presented an
elegant O(2^k * k^9 + n * m)-time fixed-parameter algorithm, parameterized by
the solution size. In our work, we pick up this line of research and present an
O(1.9102^k * (n + m))-time branching algorithm
Cliquewidth and knowledge compilation
In this paper we study the role of cliquewidth in succinct representation of Boolean functions. Our main statement is the following: Let Z be a Boolean circuit having cliquewidth k. Then there is another circuit Z * computing the same function as Z having treewidth at most 18k + 2 and which has at most 4|Z| gates where |Z| is the number of gates of Z. In this sense, cliquewidth is not more ‘powerful’ than treewidth for the purpose of representation of Boolean functions. We believe this is quite a surprising fact because it contrasts the situation with graphs where an upper bound on the treewidth implies an upper bound on the cliquewidth but not vice versa.
We demonstrate the usefulness of the new theorem for knowledge compilation. In particular, we show that a circuit Z of cliquewidth k can be compiled into a Decomposable Negation Normal Form (dnnf) of size O(918k k 2|Z|) and the same runtime. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first result on efficient knowledge compilation parameterized by cliquewidth of a Boolean circuit
A report on the nonlinear squeezed states and their non-classical properties of a generalized isotonic oscillator
We construct nonlinear squeezed states of a generalized isotonic oscillator
potential. We demonstrate the non-existence of dual counterpart of nonlinear
squeezed states in this system. We investigate statistical properties exhibited
by the squeezed states, in particular Mandel's parameter, second-order
correlation function, photon number distributions and parameter in
detail. We also examine the quadrature and amplitude-squared squeezing effects.
Finally, we derive expression for the -parameterized quasi-probability
distribution function of these states. All these information about the system
are new to the literature.Comment: Accepted for publication in J. Phys. A: Math. Theo
