Exact averages of central values of triple product L-functions

    Get PDF
We obtain exact formulas for central values of triple product L-functions averaged over newforms of weight 2 and prime level. We apply these formulas to non-vanishing problems. This paper uses a period formula for the triple product L-function proved by Gross and Kudla

Tail emission from a ring-like jet: its application to shallow decays of early afterglows and to GRB 050709

Similar to the pulsar, the magnetic axis and the spin axis of the gamma-ray burst source may not lie on the same line. This may cause a ring-like jet due to collimation of the precessing magnetic axis. We analyze the tail emission from such a jet, and find that it has a shallow decay phase with temporal index equal to -1/2 if the Lorentz factor of the ejecta is not very high. This phase is consistent with the shallow decay phase of some early X-ray afterglow detected by {\it{swift}}. The ring-like jet has a tail cusp with sharp rising and very sharp decay. This effect can provide an explanation for the re-brightening and sharp decay of the X-ray afterglow of GRB 050709.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Accepted by ChJA

    Nuclear-resonant electron scattering

We investigate nuclear-resonant electron scattering as occurring in the two-step process of nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC) followed by internal conversion. The nuclear excitation and decay are treated by a phenomenological collective model in which nuclear states and transition probabilities are described by experimental parameters. We present capture rates and resonant strengths for a number of heavy ion collision systems considering various scenarios for the resonant electron scattering process. The results show that for certain cases resonant electron scattering can have significantly larger resonance strengths than NEEC followed by the radiative decay of the nucleus. We discuss the impact of our findings on the possible experimental observation of NEEC.Comment: 24 pages, 2 plots, 5 table

Twisted Elliptic Genera of N=2 SCFTs in Two Dimensions

The elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories can be twisted by the action of the integral Heisenberg group if their U(1) charges are fractional. The basic properties of the resulting twisted elliptic genera and the associated twisted Witten indices are investigated with due attention to their behaviors in orbifoldization. Our findings are illustrated by and applied to several concrete examples. We give a better understanding of the duality phenomenon observed long before for certain Landau-Ginzburg models. We revisit and prove an old conjecture of Witten which states that every ADE Landau-Ginzburg model and the corresponding minimal model share the same elliptic genus. Mathematically, we establish ADE generalizations of the quintuple product identity.Comment: 28 pages; v2 refs adde
