    Buoyancy driven rotating boundary currents

    The structure of boundary currents formed from intermediately dense water introduced into a rotating, stably stratified, two-layer environment is investigated in a series of laboratory experiments, performed for Froude numbers ranging from 0.01 to 1. The thickness and streamwise velocity profiles in quasi-steady currents are measured using a pH activated tracer (thymol blue) and found to compare favorably to simplified analytic solutions and numerical models. Currents flowing along sloping boundaries in a stratified background exhibit robust stability at all experimental Froude numbers. Such stability is in sharp contrast to the unequivocal instability of such currents flowing against vertical boundaries, or of currents flowing along slopes in a uniform background. The presence of a variety of wave mechanisms in the ambient medium might account for the slower and wider observed structures and the stability of the currents, by effecting the damping of disturbances through wave radiation.Comment: 9 pages with 2 figures to appear in Ann NYAS "Long range effects in physics and astrophysics

    Lipkin translational-symmetry restoration in the mean-field and energy-density-functional methods

    Based on the 1960 idea of Lipkin, the minimization of energy of a symmetry-restored mean-field state is equivalent to the minimization of a corrected energy of a symmetry-broken state with the Peierls-Yoccoz mass. It is interesting to note that the "unphysical" Peierls-Yoccoz mass, and not the true mass, appears in the Lipkin projected energy. The Peierls-Yoccoz mass can be easily calculated from the energy and overlap kernels, which allows for a systematic, albeit approximate, restoration of translational symmetry within the energy-density formalism.     Effective interactions and shell model studies of heavy tin isotopes

    We present results from large-scale shell-model calculations of even and odd tin isotopes from 134Sn to 142}Sn with a shell-model space defined by the 1f7/2,2p3/2,0h9/2,2p1/2,1f5/2,0i13/2 single-particle orbits. An effective two-body interaction based on modern nucleon-nucleon interactions is employed. The shell-model results are in turn analyzed for their pairing content using a generalized seniority approach. Our results indicate that a pairing-model picture captures a great deal of the structure and the correlations of the lowest lying states for even and odd isotopes.Comment: 7 pages, revtex latex style, submitted to PR

    Stable ischemic heart disease in the older adults

    Ischemic heart disease is caused by atherosclerotic and/or thrombotic obstruction of coronary arteries. Clinical spectrum of ischemic heart disease expands from asymptomatic atherosclerosis of coronary arteries to acute coronary syndromes (ACS) including unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction (non-ST elevation myocardial infarction and ST elevation myocardial infarction). Stable ischemic heart disease (SIHD) refers to patients with known or suspected SIHD who have no recent or acute changes in their symptomatic status, suggesting no active thrombotic process is underway. These patients include those with (1) recent-onset or stable angina or ischemic equivalent symptoms, such as dyspnea or arm pain with exertion; (2) post-ACS stabilized after revascularization or medical therapy; and (3) asymptomatic SIHD diagnosed by abnormal stress tests or imaging studies. This review summarizes clinical features and management of SIHD in the older adult. ACS in older adults is not considered in this review
