Fast Single-Charge Sensing with an rf Quantum Point Contact
We report high-bandwidth charge sensing measurements using a GaAs quantum
point contact embedded in a radio frequency impedance matching circuit
(rf-QPC). With the rf-QPC biased near pinch-off where it is most sensitive to
charge, we demonstrate a conductance sensitivity of 5x10^(-6) e^(2)/h Hz^(-1/2)
with a bandwidth of 8 MHz. Single-shot readout of a proximal few-electron
double quantum dot is investigated in a mode where the rf-QPC back-action is
rapidly switched.Comment: related papers available at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
Rapid Single-Shot Measurement of a Singlet-Triplet Qubit
We report repeated single-shot measurements of the two-electron spin state in
a GaAs double quantum dot. The readout scheme allows measurement with fidelity
above 90% with a 7 microsecond cycle time. Hyperfine-induced precession between
singlet and triplet states of the two-electron system are directly observed, as
nuclear Overhauser fields are quasi-static on the time scale of the measurement
cycle. Repeated measurements on millisecond to second time scales reveal
evolution of the nuclear environment.Comment: supplemental material at

The Influence on Climate Change of Differing Scenarios for Future Development Analyzed Using the MIT Integrated Global System Model
Abstract and PDF report are also available on the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change website (http://globalchange.mit.edu/).A wide variety of scenarios for future development have played significant roles in climate policy discussions. This paper presents projections of greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations, sea level rise due to thermal expansion and glacial melt, oceanic acidity, and global mean temperature increases computed with the MIT Integrated Global Systems Model (IGSM) using scenarios for 21st century emissions developed by three different groups: intergovernmental (represented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), government (represented by the U.S. government Climate Change Science Program) and industry (represented by Royal Dutch Shell plc). In all these scenarios the climate system undergoes substantial changes. By 2100, the CO2 concentration ranges from 470 to 1020 ppm compared to a 2000 level of 365 ppm, the CO2-equivalent concentration of all greenhouse gases ranges from 550 to 1780 ppm in comparison to a 2000 level of 415 ppm, sea level rises by 24 to 56 cm relative to 2000 due to thermal expansion and glacial melt, oceanic acidity changes from a current pH of around 8 to a range from 7.63 to 7.91. The global mean temperature increases by 1.8 to 7.0 degrees C relative to 2000.The IGSM model used here is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. National Science Foundation, U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and the Industry and Foundation Sponsors of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change
The Relationship between Emotion Dysregulation and Postnatal Attachment in Women Admitted to a Mother Baby Unit
Mothers with insecure attachment styles may have increased difficulty establishing secure attachment with their infant and may experience emotion regulation difficulties in the postpartum period. This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of emotion dysregulation (ED) on the relation-ship between maternal insecure attachment style and self-reported attachment to infant in women admitted to a mother-baby unit
Measurement of Temporal Correlations of the Overhauser Field in a Double Quantum Dot
In quantum dots made from materials with nonzero nuclear spins, hyperfine
coupling creates a fluctuating effective Zeeman field (Overhauser field) felt
by electrons, which can be a dominant source of spin qubit decoherence. We
characterize the spectral properties of the fluctuating Overhauser field in a
GaAs double quantum dot by measuring correlation functions and power spectra of
the rate of singlet-triplet mixing of two separated electrons. Away from zero
field, spectral weight is concentrated below 10 Hz, with 1/f^2 dependence on
frequency, f. This is consistent with a model of nuclear spin diffusion, and
indicates that decoherence can be largely suppressed by echo techniques.Comment: related papers available at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
Development and operation of the twin radio frequency single electron transistor for solid state qubit readout
Ultra-sensitive detectors and readout devices based on the radio frequency
single electron transistor (rf-SET) combine near quantum-limited sensitivity
with fast operation. Here we describe a twin rf-SET detector that uses two
superconducting rf-SETs to perform fast, real-time cross-correlated
measurements in order to distinguish sub-electron signals from charge noise on
microsecond time-scales. The twin rf-SET makes use of two tuned resonance
circuits to simultaneously and independently address both rf-SETs using
wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and a single cryogenic amplifier. We
focus on the operation of the twin rf-SET as a charge detector and evaluate the
cross-talk between the two resonance circuits. Real time suppression of charge
noise is demonstrated by cross correlating the signals from the two rf-SETs.
For the case of simultaneous operation, the rf-SETs had charge sensitivities of
