    Orbiter structural design and verification

    The space shuttle development program provided the opportunity to challenge many of the established practices and approaches used in prior manned space flight programs. The most significant accomplishments and resulting precedents which emerged during the structural development of the space shuttle and the space shuttle orbiter are reviewed. Innovations in criteria, design solutions, and certification are highlighted, and brief comments on the lessons learned are included.     Self similarity of two point correlations in wall bounded turbulent flows

    The structure of turbulence at a height y from a wall is affected by the local mean shear at y, by the direct effect of the wall on the eddies, and by the action of other eddies close to or far from the wall. Some researchers believe that a single one of these mechanisms is dominant, while others believe that these effects have to be considered together. It is important to understand the relative importance of these effects in order to develop closure models, for example for the dissipation or for the Reynolds stress equation, and to understand the eddy structure of cross correlation functions and other measures. The specific objective was to examine the two point correlation, R sub vv, of the normal velocity component v near the wall in a turbulent channel flow and in a turbulent boundary layer. The preliminary results show that even in the inhomogeneous turbulent boundary layer, the two-point correlation function may have self similar forms. The results also show that the effects of shear and of blocking are equally important in the form of correlation functions for spacing normal to the wall. But for spanwise spacing, it was found that the eddy structure is quire different in these near flows. So any theory for turbulent structure must take both these effects into account

    Spiral phases and two-particle bound states from a systematic low-energy effective theory for magnons, electrons, and holes in an antiferromagnet

    We have constructed a systematic low-energy effective theory for hole- and electron-doped antiferromagnets, where holes reside in momentum space pockets centered at (±π2a,±π2a)(\pm\frac{\pi}{2a},\pm\frac{\pi}{2a}) and where electrons live in pockets centered at (πa,0)(\frac{\pi}{a},0) or (0,πa)(0,\frac{\pi}{a}). The effective theory is used to investigate the magnon-mediated binding between two holes or two electrons in an otherwise undoped system. We derive the one-magnon exchange potential from the effective theory and then solve the corresponding two-quasiparticle Schr\"odinger equation. As a result, we find bound state wave functions that resemble dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2}-like or dxyd_{xy}-like symmetry.     Spin chain from membrane and the Neumann-Rosochatius integrable system

    We find membrane configurations in AdS_4 x S^7, which correspond to the continuous limit of the SU(2) integrable spin chain, considered as a limit of the SU(3) spin chain, arising in N=4 SYM in four dimensions, dual to strings in AdS_5 x S^5.     We compute the Bohmian trajectories of the incoming scattering plane waves for Klein's potential step in explicit form. For finite norm incoming scattering solutions we derive their asymptotic space-time localization and we compute some Bohmian trajectories numerically.     Warm-Season Grass Establishment as Affected by Post-Planting Atrazine Application

    Atrazine [6-chloro-N-ethyl-N’-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine] provides effective weed control during big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatrum L.) establishment. However, most other desirable warm-season grasses are susceptible to atrazine injury at establishment. The objective of this study was to determine if atrazine applications after seedling would affect susceptible warm-season grass establishment. Big bluestem, switchgrass, Indiangrass [Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash], sideoats grama [Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr.], and little bluestem [Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash] were needed into greenhouse flats or field plots and 2.2 kg a.i. atrazine/ha applied at 0 (atrazine control), 7, 14, or 21 days after planting. An untreated control was used also. In greenhouse experiments, indiangrass and sideoats grama plant survival increased when atrazine applications were delayed. Switchgrass, big bluestem, and little bluestem plant survival was not affected by atrazine application. Field studies were conducted in 1983, 1985, and 1986 using the same soil type, grass species, and application periods as the greenhouse study. Delaying atrazine application 7 or more days after planting generally favored survival of indiangrass and sideoats grama. Big bluestem, switchgrass, and little bluestem were not affected by atrazine treatment. Delaying the application of atrazine may favor the survival of atrazine sensitive species. However, further researcher needs to be conducted on various soil types and environmental conditions before this can be a recommended practice

    Systematic Low-Energy Effective Field Theory for Electron-Doped Antiferromagnets

    In contrast to hole-doped systems which have hole pockets centered at (±π2a,±π2a)(\pm \frac{\pi}{2a},\pm \frac{\pi}{2a}), in lightly electron-doped antiferromagnets the charged quasiparticles reside in momentum space pockets centered at (πa,0)(\frac{\pi}{a},0) or (0,πa)(0,\frac{\pi}{a}). This has important consequences for the corresponding low-energy effective field theory of magnons and electrons which is constructed in this paper. In particular, in contrast to the hole-doped case, the magnon-mediated forces between two electrons depend on the total momentum P\vec P of the pair. For P=0\vec P = 0 the one-magnon exchange potential between two electrons at distance rr is proportional to 1/r41/r^4, while in the hole case it has a 1/r21/r^2 dependence. The effective theory predicts that spiral phases are absent in electron-doped antiferromagnets.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figure
