Single Top Quark Production and Decay at Next-to-leading Order in Hadron Collision
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections, with
one-scale phase space slicing method, to single top quark production and decay
process at hadron colliders.
Using the helicity amplitude method, the angular correlation of the final state
partons and the spin correlation of the top quark are preserved. The effect of
the top quark width is also examined.Comment: 47 pages, 9 figure
Auxiliary matrices on both sides of the equator
The spectra of previously constructed auxiliary matrices for the six-vertex
model at roots of unity are investigated for spin-chains of even and odd
length. The two cases show remarkable differences. In particular, it is shown
that for even roots of unity and an odd number of sites the eigenvalues contain
two linear independent solutions to Baxter's TQ-equation corresponding to the
Bethe ansatz equations above and below the equator. In contrast, one finds for
even spin-chains only one linear independent solution and complete strings. The
other main result is the proof of a previous conjecture on the degeneracies of
the six-vertex model at roots of unity. The proof rests on the derivation of a
functional equation for the auxiliary matrices which is closely related to a
functional equation for the eight-vertex model conjectured by Fabricius and
McCoy.Comment: 22 pages; 2nd version: one paragraph added in the conclusion and some

The old and heavy bulge of M31 I. Kinematics and stellar populations
We present new optical long-slit data along 6 position angles of the bulge
region of M31. We derive accurate stellar and gas kinematics reaching 5 arcmin
from the center, where the disk light contribution is always less than 30%, and
out to 8 arcmin along the major axis, where the disk makes 55% of the total
light. We show that the velocity dispersions of McElroy (1983) are severely
underestimated (by up to 50 km/s) and previous dynamical models have
underestimated the stellar mass of M31's bulge by a factor 2. Moreover, the
light-weighted velocity dispersion of the galaxy grows to 166 km/s, thus
reducing the discrepancy between the predicted and measured mass of the black
hole at the center of M31. The kinematic position angle varies with distance,
pointing to triaxiality. We detect gas counterrotation near the bulge minor
axis. We measure eight emission-corrected Lick indices. They are approximately
constant on circles. We derive the age, metallicity and alpha-element
overabundance profiles. Except for the region in the inner arcsecs of the
galaxy, the bulge of M31 is uniformly old (>12 Gyr, with many best-fit ages at
the model grid limit of 15 Gyr), slightly alpha-elements overabundant
([alpha/Fe]~0.2) and at solar metallicity, in agreement with studies of the
resolved stellar components. The predicted u-g, g-r and r-i Sloan color
profiles match reasonably well the dust-corrected observations. The stellar
populations have approximately radially constant mass-to-light ratios (M/L_R ~
4-4.5 for a Kroupa IMF), in agreement with stellar dynamical estimates based on
our new velocity dispersions. In the inner arcsecs the luminosity-weighted age
drops to 4-8 Gyr, while the metallicity increases to above 3 times the solar
value.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Auxiliary matrices for the six-vertex model and the algebraic Bethe ansatz
We connect two alternative concepts of solving integrable models, Baxter's
method of auxiliary matrices (or Q-operators) and the algebraic Bethe ansatz.
The main steps of the calculation are performed in a general setting and a
formula for the Bethe eigenvalues of the Q-operator is derived. A proof is
given for states which contain up to three Bethe roots. Further evidence is
provided by relating the findings to the six-vertex fusion hierarchy. For the
XXZ spin-chain we analyze the cases when the deformation parameter of the
underlying quantum group is evaluated both at and away from a root of unity.Comment: 32 page
Quasiparticles governing the zero-temperature dynamics of the 1D spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field
The T=0 dynamical properties of the one-dimensional (1D)
Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a uniform magnetic field are studied via Bethe
ansatz for cyclic chains of sites. The ground state at magnetization
, which can be interpreted as a state with spinons or as a
state of magnons, is reconfigured here as the vacuum for a different
species of quasiparticles, the {\em psinons} and {\em antipsinons}. We
investigate three kinds of quantum fluctuations, namely the spin fluctuations
parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the applied magnetic field and
the dimer fluctuations. The dynamically dominant excitation spectra are found
to be sets of collective excitations composed of two quasiparticles excited
from the psinon vacuum in different configurations. The Bethe ansatz provides a
framework for (i) the characterization of the new quasiparticles in relation to
the more familiar spinons and magnons, (ii) the calculation of spectral
boundaries and densities of states for each continuum, (iii) the calculation of
transition rates between the ground state and the dynamically dominant
collective excitations, (iv) the prediction of lineshapes for dynamic structure
factors relevant for experiments performed on a variety of quasi-1D
antiferromagnetic compounds, including KCuF,
Cu(CHN, and CuGeO.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure
Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars.VIII
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity
variations are presented for the seventh set of ten close binary systems: V410
Aur, V523 Cas, QW Gem, V921 Her, V2357 Oph, V1130 Tau, HN UMa, HX UMa, HD
93917, NSV 223. All systems, but three (V523 Cas, HD 93917, NSV 223), were
discovered photometrically by the Hipparcos mission. All systems are
double-lined (SB2) binaries and all, but the detached, very close system V1130
Tau, are contact binaries. The broadening-function permitted improvement of the
orbital elements for V523 Cas, which was the only system observed before for
radial velocity variations. Spectroscopic/visual companions were detected for
V410 Aur and HX UMa.Comment: AASTeX5, 4 figures, 3 tables, to appear AJ, June 200
Lineshape predictions via Bethe ansatz for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field
The spin fluctuations parallel to the external magnetic field in the ground
state of the one-dimensional (1D) s=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet are
dominated by a two-parameter set of collective excitations. In a cyclic chain
of N sites and magnetization 0<M_z<N/2, the ground state, which contains 2M_z
spinons, is reconfigured as the physical vacuum for a different species of
quasi-particles, identifiable in the framework of the coordinate Bethe ansatz
by characteristic configurations of Bethe quantum numbers. The dynamically
dominant excitations are found to be scattering states of two such
quasi-particles. For N -> \infty, these collective excitations form a continuum
in (q,\omega)-space with an incommensurate soft mode. Their matrix elements in
the dynamic spin structure factor S_{zz}(q,\omega) are calculated directly from
the Bethe wave functions for finite N. The resulting lineshape predictions for
N -> \infty complement the exact results previously derived via algebraic
analysis for the exact 2-spinon part of S_{zz}(q,\omega) in the zero-field
limit. They are directly relevant for the interpretation of neutron scattering
data measured in nonzero field on quasi-1D antiferromagnetic compounds.Comment: 10 page
Excited states nonlinear integral equations for an integrable anisotropic spin 1 chain
We propose a set of nonlinear integral equations to describe on the excited
states of an integrable the spin 1 chain with anisotropy. The scaling
dimensions, evaluated numerically in previous studies, are recovered
analytically by using the equations. This result may be relevant to the study
on the supersymmetric sine-Gordon model.Comment: 15 pages, 2 Figures, typos correcte
Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars.IV
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity
variations are presented for the fourth set of ten close binary systems: 44
Boo, FI Boo, V2150 Cyg, V899 Her, EX Leo, VZ Lib, SW Lyn, V2377 Oph, Anon Psc
(GSC 8-324), HT Vir. All systems are double-lined spectroscopic binaries with
only two of them not being contact systems (SW Lyn and GSC 8-324) and with five
(FI Boo, V2150 Cyg, V899 Her, EX Leo, V2377 Oph) being the recent photometric
discoveries of the Hipparcos satellite project. Five of the binaries are
triple-lined systems (44 Boo, V899 Her, VZ Lib, SW Lyn, HT Vir). Three (or
possibly four) companions in the triple-lined systems show radial-velocity
changes during the span of our observations suggesting that these are in fact
quadruple systems. Several of the studied systems are prime candidates for
combined light and radial-velocity synthesis solutions.Comment: aastex5.0, 5 figures in PS; submitted to Astron.
Fiber-optic probe for noninvasive real-time determination of tissue optical properties at multiple wavelengths
We present a compact, fast, and versatile fiber-optic probe system for real-time determination of tissue optical properties from spatially resolved continuous-wave diffuse reflectance measurements. The system collects one set of reflectance data from six source-detector distances at four arbitrary wavelengths with a maximum overall sampling rate of 100 Hz. Multivariate calibration techniques based on two-dimensional polynomial fitting are employed to extract and display the absorption and reduced scattering coefficients in real-time mode. The four wavelengths of the current configuration are 660, 785, 805, and 974 nm, respectively. Cross-validation tests on a 6 x 7 calibration matrix of Intralipid-dye phantoms showed that the mean prediction error at, e.g., 785 nm was 2.8% for the absorption coefficient and 1.3% for the reduced scattering coefficient. The errors are relative to the range of the optical properties of the phantoms at 785 nm, which were 0-0.3/cm for the absorption coefficient and 6-16/cm for the reduced scattering coefficient. Finally, we also present and discuss results from preliminary skin tissue measurements. (C) 2001 Optical Society of Americ
