Position sensitive radiation detector
An apparatus and method are disclosed for detecting and locating the origin of a gamma ray in a medical diagnostic imaging system. At least one primary fiber, which is a scintillating optical fiber, is positioned to receive radiation from a gamma ray source. At least one secondary fiber intersects the primary fiber at a non-zero angle. Both fibers have a core surrounded by a cladding, with the claddings of the two fibers in optical contact at an intersection point. Both the primary and secondary fibers are provided with means for detecting light propagated in the fibers. The interaction of radiation such as a gamma ray with the primary fiber will result in the propagation of light in both the primary and secondary fibers, thereby permitting the determination of the site of impact of the gamma ray in the detector, and possibly also enabling the determination of the path of incidence of the gamma ray.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste

Method and apparatus for analyzing material properties using ultrasound
Apparatus is disclosed for investigating the mechanical properties of a solid material such as bone, including means for positioning the apparatus in proximity to a surface of the material, at least one emitting ultrasound transducer, at least one receiving ultrasound transducer positioned to received ultrasound waves that have been emitted and have contacted the surface of the material, means for varying the angle of incidence of the emitted ultrasound wave towards the material, means for determining the alignment of the surface of the material with respect to the emitting and receiving ultrasound transdsucers, and signal analyzer means coupled to the receiving transducer for determining at least one characteristic of the received ultrasound wave which is indicative of a mechanical property of the material. A method is also disclosed of using such apparatus. The present invention permits the quick and efficient evaluation of treatment for osteoporosis, and whether that treatment has in fact reduced the tendency of a patient's bones to fracture.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste

Method and apparatus for analyzing material properties using reflected ultrasound
A method and apparatus which assesses the mechanical properties of a material by launching an ultrasound signal at the material while varying the angle of incidence and analyzing the amplitude of the ultrasound wave reflected by the material. The method and apparatus correlates extrema (maxima or minima inflection points) in the reflected angle with the angle of incidence of the transmitted signal to identify critical angles of incidence. The velocity of the pressure wave in the material has been found to be a function of a first critical angle corresponding to a first maxima as the angle of incidence is increased in the range 0.degree.-90.degree.. The velocity of the shear wave in the material has been found to be a function of a second critical angle corresponding to a second maxima following the first maxima. Young's modulus of elasticity, Poisson's modulus, and density can be approximated using the velocity of the pressure wave and shear wave for isotropic materials. A third critical angle corresponding to a minima after the first critical angle (reflected amplitude approaching o) has been found particularly useful in conjunction with the first and second critical angles in assessing bone density and in determining whether the second critical point is at a maximum or an inflection point. The extension of the method in which the plane of scattering is rotated around the normal to bone while keeping the point of observation fixed has been found particularly useful in assessing the mechanical properties of anisotropic materials such as cortical bone.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
Nanoparticulate Radiolabelled Quinolines Detect Amyloid Plaques in Mouse Models of Alzheimer's Disease
Detecting aggregated amyloid peptides (Aβ plaques) presents targets for developing biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Polymeric n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (PBCA) nanoparticles (NPs) were encapsulated with radiolabelled amyloid affinity 125I-clioquinol (CQ, 5-chloro-7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline) as in vivo probes. 125I-CQ-PBCA NPs crossed the BBB (2.3 ± 0.9 ID/g) (P < .05) in the WT mouse (N = 210), compared to 125I-CQ (1.0 ± 0.4 ID/g). 125I-CQ-PBCA NP brain uptake increased in AD transgenic mice (APP/PS1) versus WT (N = 38; 2.54 × 105 ± 5.31 × 104 DLU/mm2; versus 1.98 × 105 ± 2.22 × 104 DLU/mm2) and in APP/PS1/Tau. Brain increases were in mice intracranially injected with aggregated Aβ42 peptide (N = 17; 7.19 × 105 ± 1.25 × 105 DLU/mm2), versus WT (6.07 × 105 ± 7.47 × 104 DLU/mm2). Storage phosphor imaging and histopathological staining of the plaques, Fe2+ and Cu2+, validated results. 125I-CQ-PBCA NPs have specificity for Aβ in vitro and in vivo and are promising as in vivo SPECT (123I), or PET (124I) amyloid imaging agents
Bio-inspired hydrogel composed of hyaluronic acid and alginate as a potential bioink for 3D bioprinting of articular cartilage engineering constructs
Bioprinting is a promising tool to fabricate well-organized cell-laden constructs for repair and regener- ation of articular cartilage. The selection of a suitable bioink, in terms of composition and mechanical properties, is crucial for the development of viable cartilage substitutes. In this study, we focused on the use of one of the main cartilage components, hyaluronic acid (HA), to design and formulate a new bioink for cartilage tissue 3D bioprinting. Major characteristics required for this application such as printabil- ity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability were analyzed. To produce cartilage constructs with optimal mechanical properties, HA-based bioink was co-printed with polylactic acid (PLA). HA-based bioink was found to improve cell functionality by an increase in the expression of chondrogenic gene markers and specific matrix deposition and, therefore, tissue formation. I=3/2 Scattering in the Nonrelativisitic Quark Potential Model
We study elastic scattering to Born order using
nonrelativistic quark wavefunctions in a constituent-exchange model. This
channel is ideal for the study of nonresonant meson-meson scattering amplitudes
since s-channel resonances do not contribute significantly. Standard quark
model parameters yield good agreement with the measured S- and P-wave phase
shifts and with PCAC calculations of the scattering length. The P-wave phase
shift is especially interesting because it is nonzero solely due to
symmetry breaking effects, and is found to be in good agreement with experiment
given conventional values for the strange and nonstrange constituent quark

Are language production problems apparent in adults who no longer meet diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?
In this study, we examined sentence production in a sample of adults (N = 21) who had had attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as children, but as adults no longer met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria (APA, 2000). This “remitted” group was assessed on a sentence production task. On each trial, participants saw two objects and a verb. Their task was to construct a sentence using the objects as arguments of the verb. Results showed more ungrammatical and disfluent utterances with one particular type of verb (i.e., participle). In a second set of analyses, we compared the remitted group to both control participants and a “persistent” group, who had ADHD as children and as adults. Results showed that remitters were more likely to produce ungrammatical utterances and to make repair disfluencies compared to controls, and they patterned more similarly to ADHD participants. Psychometric properties of the Farsi translation of the kiddie schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia-present and lifetime version
BACKGROUND: Semi-structural clinical interviews are very important in the area of mental health research and services. There were no studies of the reliability and validity of the Farsi (Persian) version of Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) in Iran. This study compares the results of face-to-face, semi-structural interview and clinical interview by a child and adolescent psychiatrist. METHOD: Subjects were 109 children and adolescents recruited to the child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic of Hafez Hospital. Order of interview (in-psychiatrist or the semi-structural interview) was determined using random assignment within a counterbalanced framework. After, translation and back translation of K-SADS-PL, the Farsi version of K-SADS-PL was provided and used in the study. The interviewer was unaware of the child and adolescent psychiatrist diagnosis at the time of making the interview. Consensual validity, test-retest and inter-rater reliability, sensitivity, specifity, positive and negative predictive validity for the disorders were studied. RESULTS: Consensual validity of all of the psychiatric disorders was good to excellent. It was highest for panic disorder, conduct disorder, and simple phobia. Consensual validity of anorexia nervosa was 0.49. There was sufficient validity and test-retest and inter-rater reliability and good to excellent sensitivity and specifity and positive and negative predictive validity for nearly all of the disorders. Test-retest reliabilities of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and tic disorder were 0.81, 0.67, and 0.56; respectively. Inter-rater reliabilities of ADHD, and ODD were 0.69 and 0.69. Tic disorder, post traumatic disorder, panic disorder, and ADHD had the highest positive predictive validities. CONCLUSION: The Farsi version of K-SADS-PL is a valid and reliable interview instrument for use in assessing and diagnosising child and adolescent psychiatric disorders
Advances of hyaluronic acid in stem cell therapy and tissue engineering, including current clinical trials
yaluronic acid (HA), as one of the main components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), plays a significant role in a multitude of biological processes involving cell migration, proliferation, differentiation, wound healing and inflammation. Thanks to its excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability and hygroscopic properties, HA has been used in its natural form for joint lubrication and ocular treatment. The chemical structure of HA can be easily modified by direct reaction with its carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Recently, HA derivatives have been synthesised with the aim of developing HA-based materials with increased mechanical strength, improved cell interactions and reduced biodegradation and studied for regenerative medicine purposes, including cell therapy and tissue engineering. In this context, the present manuscript reviews HA applications from a basic point of view – including chemical modifications and cellular biology aspects related to clinical translation – and future perspectives of using biofabrication technologies for regenerative medicine. A detailed description of current clinical trials, testing advanced therapies based on combination of stem cells and HA formulations, is included. The final goal was to offer an integral portrait and a deeper comprehension of the current applications of HA from bench to bedside
