    Evidence for saturation of channel transmission from conductance fluctuations in atomic-size point contacts

    The conductance of atomic size contacts has a small, random, voltage dependent component analogous to conductance fluctuations observed in diffusive wires (UCF). A new effect is observed in gold contacts, consisting of a marked suppression of these fluctuations when the conductance of the contact is close to integer multiples of the conductance quantum. Using a model based on the Landauer-Buettiker formalism we interpret this effect as evidence that the conductance tends to be built up from fully transmitted (i.e., saturated) channels plus a single, which is partially transmitted.Comment: An error in Eq.(2) was corrected, where a square root was added to the factor (1-cos(gamma)).     Effect of quantum interference in the nonlinear conductance of microconstrictions

    The influence of the interference of electron waves, which were scattered by single impurities, on nonlinear quantum conductance of metallic microconstrictions (as was recently investigated experimentally) is studied theoretically. The dependence of the interference pattern in the conductance G(V)G(V) on the contact diameter and the spatial distribution of impurities is analyzed. It is shown that the amplitude of conductance oscillation is strongly depended on the position of impurities inside the constriction.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, To appear in PR

    Andreev Reflection In Ferromagnet-Superconductor Junctions

    The transport properties of a ferromagnet-superconductor (FS) junction are studied in a scattering formulation. Andreev reflection at the FS interface is strongly affected by the exchange interaction in the ferromagnet. The conductance G_FS of a ballistic point contact between F and S can be both larger or smaller than the value G_FN with the superconductor in the normal state, depending on the ratio of the exchange and Fermi energies. If the ferromagnet contains a tunnel barrier (I), the conductance G_FIFS exhibits resonances which do not vanish in linear response -- in contrast to the Tomasch oscillations for non-ferromagnetic materials.Comment: 8 pages, RevTeX v3.0, including 3 encapsulated postscript figures; [2017: figures included in text

    Meta-Analysis of the Association between Transforming Growth Factor-Beta Polymorphisms and Complications of Coronary Heart Disease

    Objective: To investigate the association between common transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ÎČ) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and significant complications of coronary heart disease (CHD).\ud \ud Method: We performed a meta-analysis of published case-control studies assessing the association of TGF-ÎČ SNPs with a range of CHD complications. A random effects model was used to calculate odds ratios and confidence intervals. Analyses were conducted for additive, dominant and recessive modes of inheritance.\ud \ud Results: Six studies involving 5535 cases and 2970 controls examining the association of common SNPs in TGF-ÎČ1 with CHD were identified. Applying a dominant model of inheritance, three TGF-ÎČ1 SNPs were significantly associated with CHD complications: The T alleles of rs1800469 (OR = 1.125, 95% CI 1.016–1.247, p = 0.031) and rs1800470 (OR = 1.146, 95% CI 1.026–1.279, p = 0.021); and the C allele of rs1800471 (OR = 1.207, 95% CI 1.037–1.406, p = 0.021).\ud \ud Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggests that common genetic polymorphisms in TGF-ÎČ1 are associated with complications of CHD

    A systems perspective on the death of a car company

    Purpose – The aim of this paper is to understand how large and apparently successful organizations enter spirals of decline that are very difficult to reverse. The paper examines the case of Rover, once one of the largest car producers in the world, which collapsed in 2005. An analysis of strategic and operational choices made over a period of 40 years investigates the reasons for, and consequences of, a growing mismatch between the context faced by the company (industry dynamics, market conditions) and its operational capabilities, a mismatch that ultimately brought about the company's demise. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on interviews with 32 people, including senior managers (including four chief executives), government ministers and union officials who were key decision makers within, or close to, the company during the period 1968 and 2005. Secondary sources and documentary evidence (e.g. production and sales data) are used to build up a historical picture of the company and to depict its deteriorating financial and market position from 1968 onwards. Findings – The company was formed from a multitude of previously independent firms as part of a government‐sponsored agenda to build a UK National Champion in the car industry. The merged company failed due to several factors including poor product development processes, poor manufacturing performance, difficult labour relations, a very wide product portfolio and a lack of financial control. Although strenuous efforts were made to address those issues, including periods of whole or part ownership by British Aerospace, Honda and BMW, the company's position deteriorated until eventually production volumes were too low for viable operation. Practical implications – The case of Rover highlights the importance of what has been termed “the management unit” in complex systems. The management unit comprises processes and routines to deal with challenges such as managing product portfolios, connecting strategic and operational choices, and scanning and responding to the environment. In the case of Rover, a number of factors taken together generated excessive load on a management unit frequently operating under conditions of resource scarcity. We conclude that viewing corporate failure from a systems perspective, rather than in terms of shortcomings in specific subsystems, such as manufacturing or product development, yields insights often absent in the operations management literature. Originality/value – The paper is of value by showing corporate failure from a systems perspective, rather than in terms of shortcomings in specific subsystems, such as manufacturing or product development; and yields insights often absent in the operations management literature. The Rover case featured in the paper demonstrates the usefulness of systems ideas to understanding at least some types of failure, not as an alterative to capability‐based approaches, but in addition to them
