An Ecological Assessment of Property and Violent Crime Rates Across a Latino Urban Landscape: The Role of Social Disorganization and Institutional Anomie Theory
The present research put forth an integrated theoretical framework aimed at providing a more holistic community- level approach explaining crime across a heavily populated Latino city. Guided by social disorganization and institutional anomie theory, this study used several data sources and OLS regression techniques to examine the impact of social disorganization, economic and noneconomic institutional characteristics on rates of property and violent crime across 1,016 census block groups in San Antonio, Texas. While several findings emerged, interactions between alcohol density and concentrated disadvantage were significant and positively associated with property and violent crime. Interactions between welfare generosity and concentrated disadvantage were significant and negatively associated with the outcomes

Random walks in random Dirichlet environment are transient in dimension
We consider random walks in random Dirichlet environment (RWDE) which is a
special type of random walks in random environment where the exit probabilities
at each site are i.i.d. Dirichlet random variables. On , RWDE are
parameterized by a -uplet of positive reals. We prove that for all values
of the parameters, RWDE are transient in dimension . We also prove that
the Green function has some finite moments and we characterize the finite
moments. Our result is more general and applies for example to finitely
generated symmetric transient Cayley graphs. In terms of reinforced random

The Deafness-Associated Mitochondrial DNA Mutation at Position 7445, Which Affects tRNASer(UCN) Precursor Processing, Has Long-Range Effects on NADH Dehydrogenase Subunit ND6 Gene Expression
The pathogenetic mechanism of the deafness-associated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) T7445C mutation has been investigated in several lymphoblastoid cell lines from members of a New Zealand pedigree exhibiting the mutation in homoplasmic form and from control individuals. We show here that the mutation flanks the 3' end of the tRNASer(UCN) gene sequence and affects the rate but not the sites of processing of the tRNA precursor. This causes an average reduction of ~70% in the tRNASer(UCN) level and a decrease of ~45% in protein synthesis rate in the cell lines analyzed. The data show a sharp threshold in the capacity of tRNASer(UCN) to support the wild-type protein synthesis rate, which corresponds to ~40% of the control level of this tRNA. Strikingly, a 7445 mutation-associated marked reduction has been observed in the level of the mRNA for the NADH dehydrogenase (complex I) ND6 subunit gene, which is located ~7 kbp upstream and is cotranscribed with the tRNASer(UCN) gene, with strong evidence pointing to a mechanistic link with the tRNA precursor processing defect. Such reduction significantly affects the rate of synthesis of the ND6 subunit and plays a determinant role in the deafness-associated respiratory phenotype of the mutant cell lines. In particular, it accounts for their specific, very significant decrease in glutamate- or malate-dependent O2 consumption. Furthermore, several homoplasmic mtDNA mutations affecting subunits of NADH dehydrogenase may play a synergistic role in the establishment of the respiratory phenotype of the mutant cells
Lectures on mathematical aspects of (twisted) supersymmetric gauge theories
Supersymmetric gauge theories have played a central role in applications of
quantum field theory to mathematics. Topologically twisted supersymmetric gauge
theories often admit a rigorous mathematical description: for example, the
Donaldson invariants of a 4-manifold can be interpreted as the correlation
functions of a topologically twisted N=2 gauge theory. The aim of these
lectures is to describe a mathematical formulation of partially-twisted
supersymmetric gauge theories (in perturbation theory). These partially twisted
theories are intermediate in complexity between the physical theory and the
topologically twisted theories. Moreover, we will sketch how the operators of
such a theory form a two complex dimensional analog of a vertex algebra.
Finally, we will consider a deformation of the N=1 theory and discuss its

Dispersionful analogues of Benney's equations and -wave systems
We recall Krichever's construction of additional flows to Benney's hierarchy,
attached to poles at finite distance of the Lax operator. Then we construct a
``dispersionful'' analogue of this hierarchy, in which the role of poles at
finite distance is played by Miura fields. We connect this hierarchy with
-wave systems, and prove several facts about the latter (Lax representation,
Chern-Simons-type Lagrangian, connection with Liouville equation,

Polarized radio emission from extensive air showers measured with LOFAR
We present LOFAR measurements of radio emission from extensive air showers.
We find that this emission is strongly polarized, with a median degree of
polarization of nearly , and that the angle between the polarization
direction of the electric field and the Lorentz force acting on the particles,
depends on the observer location in the shower plane. This can be understood as
a superposition of the radially polarized charge-excess emission mechanism,
first proposed by Askaryan and the geomagnetic emission mechanism proposed by
Kahn and Lerche. We calculate the relative strengths of both contributions, as
quantified by the charge-excess fraction, for individual air showers. We
find that the measured charge-excess fraction is higher for air showers
arriving from closer to the zenith. Furthermore, the measured charge-excess
fraction also increases with increasing observer distance from the air shower
symmetry axis. The measured values range from for very
inclined air showers at to for almost
vertical showers at . Both dependencies are in qualitative

A method for high precision reconstruction of air shower Xmax using two-dimensional radio intensity profiles
The mass composition of cosmic rays contains important clues about their
origin. Accurate measurements are needed to resolve long-standing issues such
as the transition from Galactic to extragalactic origin, and the nature of the
cutoff observed at the highest energies. Composition can be studied by
measuring the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum Xmax of air showers
generated by high-energy cosmic rays hitting the Earth's atmosphere. We present
a new method to reconstruct Xmax based on radio measurements. The radio
emission mechanism of air showers is a complex process that creates an
asymmetric intensity pattern on the ground. The shape of this pattern strongly
depends on the longitudinal development of the shower. We reconstruct Xmax by
fitting two-dimensional intensity profiles, simulated with CoREAS, to data from
the LOFAR radio telescope. In the dense LOFAR core, air showers are detected by
hundreds of antennas simultaneously. The simulations fit the data very well,
indicating that the radiation mechanism is now well-understood. The typical
uncertainty on the reconstruction of Xmax for LOFAR showers is 17 g/cm^2.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
