Constrained Optimization for a Subset of the Gaussian Parsimonious Clustering Models

The expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is an iterative method for finding maximum likelihood estimates when data are incomplete or are treated as being incomplete. The EM algorithm and its variants are commonly used for parameter estimation in applications of mixture models for clustering and classification. This despite the fact that even the Gaussian mixture model likelihood surface contains many local maxima and is singularity riddled. Previous work has focused on circumventing this problem by constraining the smallest eigenvalue of the component covariance matrices. In this paper, we consider constraining the smallest eigenvalue, the largest eigenvalue, and both the smallest and largest within the family setting. Specifically, a subset of the GPCM family is considered for model-based clustering, where we use a re-parameterized version of the famous eigenvalue decomposition of the component covariance matrices. Our approach is illustrated using various experiments with simulated and real data

Economic potential of forest resources of Nepal

Nepal's forest resources underpin the livelihoods of rural people in important ways. During the country's 'planned development' over the past 50 years, the government, donors and policy makers have viewed these resources as a key vehicle for ushering in economic growth and for meeting basic needs. They underscore the potential value of forest resources for achieving conservation and socio-economic objectives. To what extent have economic incentives been generated to effectively harness these resources to meet the said objectives is an open question. To address this question, this paper reviews briefly and broadly the economic potential of the country's forest resources in terms of forest goods and services. Estimates of economic potential of timber and non-timber forest products and environmental services have been assessed. A number of recommendations for realizing the potential for achieving development and poverty reduction objectives is provided

Maize is the second most important crop after rice in Nepal. Maize is grown largely on bari land during summer. The productivity of maize is quite low. A number of factors appear to be in play for the low productivity in the middle hills of Nepal

Uterine Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Its Unfolded Protein Response May Regulate Caspase 3 Activation in the Pregnant Mouse Uterus

We have previously proposed that uterine caspase-3 may modulate uterine contractility in a gestationally regulated fashion. The objective of this study was to determine the mechanism by which uterine caspase-3 is activated and consequently controlled in the pregnant uterus across gestation. Utilizing the mouse uterus as our gestational model we examined the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic signaling pathways and the endoplasmic reticulum stress response as potential activators of uterine caspase-3 at the transcriptional and translational level. Our study revealed robust activation of the uterine myocyte endoplasmic reticulum stress response and its adaptive unfolded protein response during pregnancy coinciding respectively with increased uterine caspase-3 activity and its withdrawal to term. In contrast the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic signaling pathways remained inactive across gestation. We speculate that physiological stimuli experienced by the pregnant uterus likely potentiates the uterine myocyte endoplasmic reticulum stress response resulting in elevated caspase-3 activation, which is isolated to the pregnant mouse myometrium. However as term approaches, activation of an elevated adaptive unfolded protein response acts to limit the endoplasmic reticulum stress response inhibiting caspase-3 resulting in its decline towards term. We speculate that these events have the capacity to regulate gestational length in a caspase-3 dependent manne
