Sound Radiation Characteristics of Rectangular Duct: An Experimental Approach

    Get PDF
The sound radiation characteristics of rectangular duct depend on acoustical and structural subsystems response. The coupling of acoustic duct modes and structural duct wall modes plays a critical role in generating noise in transverse direction of the duct, and its called as break-out noise. For nding coupled behaviour of the sys- tem, uncoupled analysis of each subsystem is necessary. Experimental modal analysis (EMA) of a standard dimension rectangular duct specimen is the rst practical step. It helps to understand the coupling behavior between acoustic and structural modes in HVAC ducts. As an initial study of EMA, we found the Modal Assurance Cri- teria (MAC) for xed-free beam, free-free and xed-free conditions of rectangular steel plate and free-free conditions of rectangular duct. Finally, for simply supported rectangular duct, modal parameters have obtained using Experimental Modal Anal- ysis (EMA). Correlated EMA results with Finite-Element Analysis (FEA) results using MAC method. An acoustic source for providing plane waves to the rectangular duct have been set up and found the input sound power supplied to the duct cavity. Methodology to nd input sound power have been introduced. Using the assistance of various experimental techniques, we found the sound power radiated from the duct walls and compared. v

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of topical prostaglandin analogues as compared to other antiglaucoma agents on the conjunctival cell profile and results of glaucoma filtration surgery. METHODOLOGY: Glaucoma triple procedure (trabeculectomy, phacoemulsification, and intraocular lens implantation) was performed in 109 patients and the outcome of these procedures was assessed after a minimum follow-up of 6 months. A conjunctival biopsy specimen was obtained at the time of surgery. The patients were divided into 2 groups (PG analogue and Non-PG analogue) according to the type of topical therapy administered preoperatively. Surgical outcomes were categorised according the recommendations by World Glaucoma Association. RESULTS: 109 patients recruited, 42 patients were in the PG analogue group and 67 were in the Non-PG analogue group. Statistically significant difference between the groups was seen at 1 month (p=0.037) and 3 month (p=0.003) follow-ups postoperatively. Final IOP was lower in Non-PG analogue group compared to PG-analogue group (P=0.051). Though no statistically significant difference was found, the chances of successful filtration surgery were higher among the Non PG group compared to the PG analogue group. The numbers of goblet cells and plasma cells were more in the PG analogue group while the number of mast cells was more in the non PG analogue group suggestive of more subclinical inflammation and fibrosis. CONCLUSION: While preoperative medications influence the outcome of filtration surgery, there is no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups however the postoperative IOP was lesser in the non PG analogue group. Histopathologically, the conjunctival changes induced by prostaglandin analogues were more favourable to better surgical outcomes as compared with aqueous suppressants

Economic Burden of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among Patients in the Rural Field Practice Area of a Medical College in Davangere - A Cross Sectional Study

Background: Diabetes is rapidly emerging as a major health care problem, even in rural India. The earlier occurrence, delayed diagnosis and improper care leads to high complication rates, greater productivity loss and consequently higher costs. As the epidemiological burden of diabetes increases, the economic burden is expected to rise and the economically disadvantaged will be affected the most. Objectives: To assess the economic burden of diabetes among type 2 diabetic patients and to explore the factors associated with the economic burden of diabetes.Materials and Methods: Community based cross sectional study was carried out in rural field practice area of a medical college in Davangere for a period of six months during 2016-17 among 112 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Information was collected using pretested predesigned questionnaire on socio-demographic details, health services utilization, expenditure incurred on diabetes care (both direct and indirect costs) in the past six months. Results: The direct cost accounted for 94.2% of the total cost of treatment, of which hospitalization for diabetes related complications and medications were major components. Source of health care significantly influenced the direct cost. About 8.9% of study subjects skipped medications at least once due to lack of money. Conclusions: Direct cost in the management of diabetes is major contributor to the expenditure. Availability of affordable essential quality diabetic medications and strengthening of public healthcare is crucial in reduction of these direct costs involved in diabetic management

Nebular Line Emission During the Epoch of Reionization

Nebular emission lines associated with galactic HII regions carry information about both physical properties of the ionised gas and the source of ionising photons as well as providing the opportunity of measuring accurate redshifts and thus distances once a cosmological model is assumed. While nebular line emission has been extensively studied at lower redshift there are currently only few constraints within the epoch of reionisation (EoR, z>6z>6), chiefly due to the lack of sensitive near-IR spectrographs. However, this will soon change with the arrival of the Webb Telescope providing sensitive near-IR spectroscopy covering the rest-frame UV and optical emission of galaxies in the EoR. In anticipation of Webb we combine the large cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Bluetides with photoionisation modelling to predict the nebular emission line properties of galaxies at z=813z=8\to 13. We find good agreement with the, albeit limited, existing direct and indirect observational constraints on equivalent widths though poorer agreement with luminosity function constraints.Comment: 17 pages, accepted to MNRAS, significant modification from v1.0 data available at https://stephenmwilkins.github.io/BluetidesEmissionLines_Public

Toll-Like Receptors: Role in Dermatological Disease

    Get PDF
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a class of conserved receptors that recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) present in microbes. In humans, at least ten TLRs have been identified, and their recognition targets range from bacterial endotoxins to lipopeptides, DNA, dsRNA, ssRNA, fungal products, and several host factors. Of dermatological interest, these receptors are expressed on several skin cells including keratinocytes, melanocytes, and Langerhans cells. TLRs are essential in identifying microbial products and are known to link the innate and adaptive immune systems. Over the years, there have been significant advances in our understanding of TLRs in skin inflammation, cutaneous malignancies, and defence mechanisms. In this paper, we will describe the association between TLRs and various skin pathologies and discuss proposed TLR therapeutics

A new, simple, thermally efficient and solvent-free condensation of 2-amino-4,5-dihydro-4-phenylpyrano[3,2-b]indole-3-carbonitrile derivatives with coumarin-3-carboxylic acid employing succinimide-N-sulfonic acid (SuSA) as catalyst for the synthesis of a series of 5,6-dihydro-2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)-5-phenyl-indolo[2',3':5,6]pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-one derivatives is described. This method has the advantages of high yield, simple methodology, and short reaction time, as well as being green in terms of avoiding the use of toxic catalysts and solvents. Furthermore, the catalyst could be recycled and reused four times without significant loss of activity. Thiourea dioxide (TUD) catalyzed efficient three-component coupling reactions of aromatic aldehydes, 3-hydroxyindole and malononitrile in water at 70 ºC was described as the preparation of 2-amino-4,5-dihydro-4-phenylpyrano[3,2-b]indole-3-carbonitrile derivatives. KEY WORDS: Succinimide-N-sulfonic acid, Thiourea dioxide, Coumarin-3-carboxylic acid, Indolo pyrano  pyrimidineone derivatives Bull.
